Hi! I'm sponsoring adult English classes at my school for our non-English speaking parents. Most of them are native Spanish speakers. I want to make a welcome sign for them in Spanish. If anyone can help me translate that would be great. Here is what I want the sign to say: Welcome to Adult English Class! Please sign in here. If you have children with you that need to go to the child care room, please go with them to the cafeteria. Classes are in the library. Thank you for coming!! Thank you to anyone that can help me with this!!! |

It's not "nececitan" , its "necesitan" and either way its not correct in this case its necesidad (need) *insert extra useless space here* |

I'm home from our first class and I had a great time!! I had twelve families show up. Twenty signed up and I'm sure they will be here at the next session. Some of them probably forgot. Most families were Spanish speaking but I had one Japanese family and one Egyptian family. I plan on sending home a "thank you for coming" postcard home so I'll be bugging some of you again tomorrow for help. Thanks again to all that helped!!!! |

I'm going to have to agree with Jamie on the fact that anyone who comes to America should learn to speak English. It gets on my nerves when people spend years, even decades living here and they still live in a bubble speaking their own native language and don't care about being able to communicate with the majority of Americans. However, taken by the fact that Lisser is actually teaching parents to speak English then I think Jamie owes an apology for her comments. |
Poo, again 14.11.2006 10:03 |
It's fucking stupid to tell people that are coming to classes to learn English to learn the language or go home. They're one step ahead of you! Ha-ha! PS Justin Hawkins is teh shit. |

Especially for those that are really trying to learn something outside of their comfort zone. I am starting Spanish classes in the summer so I'll be doing the same thing and I am scared to death!!! But I'm doing it so I can imagine how they feel. I don't think that people who are not from America should "have" to learn English just because they are in America and we speak English. I think they should learn the language spoken in the country they are in so they can have access to everything they need to have access to, ie. grocery stores, reading the newspaper, being able to understand the Dr. if there is something wrong, etc. Part of what America is supposed to stand for is accepting everyone no matter what their race, color, nationality, or religion is. I wish that was a reality....maybe one day. |

Anyways, back to the start of this topic, I know you never meant to be racist or biased, and my apologies if I made you feel like one. Besides, if you hated being mingled in between so many languages and cultures you wouldn't be living in New York in the first place. That's exactly what I love about living here because there's a little piece of the world here more than any other place on earth. I know what you mean about people not willing to speak English. It's the official language and everybody should make an effort to try to speak it. I understand that there's many people who weren't born here and who might find it difficult to communicate when they first arrive, and I say this because I was once in the same position as they were. However, I notice that certain people spend their entire lives living on a foreign community or depending on someone else to translate for them, and no offense to anyone foreigners living in the US, but it's very pathetic when the country has to adapt to you instead of you adapting to the country. Especially considering that there are very cheap (sometimes free) adult education programs to help people who don't speak the language. |

Nobody's asking these people to discard their roots, culture, and language. All we're asking is for them to learn enough English so they can get by. It really shouldn't be much to ask. My grandparents came here after WWII and they chose to learn English all on their own, so good on them. Nowadays there are plenty of social programs there to spoonfeed immigrants, and plenty of these people still don't bother to learn English and integrate themselves into our culture - yet they complain when we don't accomodate their "needs". My city has its Italian sections for example, and very few of these people can speak any English at all. Their kids do it for them. I'm generally not a conservative person, but on this subject I suppose I am: if they like their culture so much to the point that they refuse to even somewhat integrate into ours, then they can go back home - no matter where they are from or what their story is. I wouldn't dream of moving to another country without learning their language and familiarizing myself with their culture, even beforehand. |
Lisser 15.11.2006 09:19 |
I can't speak for the people that come here and do not want to learn our language. The families I work with at my school are very eager to learn. They desperately want to learn the language, be accepted, and be productive citizens. They work hard and contribute to our community. I don't deny that there are people that come here from other countries that have no desire to learn. There are people like that all over the world, not to mention the Americans who don't have a grasp of their native language, drop out of school at 16, or depend on the government their entire life for food, shelter, and all basic needs. The people I am working with currently do not come close to fitting in any of those categories. |
