Thats Brittany Murphy!!!??? Wow. |
Madman007 05.11.2006 04:00 |
It's not that bad... and at least I get a little dosage of Queen everytime I go to the movie theatre. |
rocks. 05.11.2006 08:44 |
She was sorta....flat throughout the whole thing. Eh, at least she wasnt massivly flat or massivly sharp throughout it all. |
Deacon Fan 05.11.2006 14:13 |
It's not her fault! She's a goddamn penguin! |
Eviltwin 08.11.2006 21:45 |
^That's no excuse. You're a bunny and you can type. |
Legy 08.11.2006 23:13 |
Wow! You would think, with all of our modern recording technology she would have sounded better. |
The Fairy King 09.11.2006 03:14 |
It's a nice version. |
Togg 09.11.2006 07:28 |
Never fails to amaze me that anyone singing a Queen song gets followed by dozens of comments like, 'She's flat' She's sharpe, shes terrible etc. NO she wasn't, it's just not Freddie. And as for 'surely modern technology should be able to make that better' what are you talking about? there's nothing wrong with it, hse's not flat, she sings it well it's just not the version you know that's all. get over it. Do you seriousely think a film would get released with a soundtrack that had the singer singing flat. no, they don't. she wasn't flat. |
Adam Baboolal 09.11.2006 08:33 |
Actually, I could care less that someone is singing a Queen song (in this instance), because I like Brittany Murphy. But my ears tell me that she's not a great singer. Shame, as I liked that dance number she sings on that was in the charts a little while ago. Adam. |
FriedChicken 09.11.2006 08:48 |
Great version! This is the first time I hear a woman do justice to a Queen song. The only thing I don't like is how the vocals sound too 'close-miked'. Hmm.. Adam, you know what I mean, right? :) |

You can sing in key and have a flat performance. I've heard several artist do very good covers of Queen songs, this was not one of them. |

Freddie Mercury was arguably the most unique voice in the history of rock music. His voice was amazing, and apart from that, he knew how to sing a song with convicion. The odds of anyone singing a Queen song better than Freddie are beyond infinitesmal. Just enjoy the song for whatever interpretation people put on it, I don't think they're trying to do it better than him. |
FriedChicken 09.11.2006 11:29 |
It's just what you are used to. Freddie singing Gimme some Loving, or Imagine or Immigrant Song really sucked |

Wonder if it's just an early cut or that it's the way they want it to sound. Adam. |

For us non-audiphiles, what exactly do you mean by 'close miked'? |
Adam Baboolal 09.11.2006 13:28 |
I don't think it's worth really explaining otherwise. Is there a reason you'd like to know what we meant? Adam. |
Boy Thomas Raker 09.11.2006 14:04 |
No, I just thought I'd add to my post count. Perhaps I'll move it to the serious forum in hopes of getting an answer. |

i only like it because of the penguins. lol. |

Boy Thomas Raker wrote: For us non-audiphiles, what exactly do you mean by 'close miked'?Close Miking is a recording technique. It's when you place a microphone close to the source where the sound comes from. For a lot of microphones with a cardioid polar pattern (which is the most used pattern for recording pop/rock vocals) close miking results in a boost in the lower frequenties (also known as the proximity effect). Close miking also gives you a drier sound, since you have less space for the room reflections to come through. You can hear that she backs up from the microphone when she's singing louder. Because for the louder bits the sound gets more natural and less bassy. But ofcourse you already know all of this, since you're Boy Thomas Raker :D |

Thanks Fried Chicken. Is this technique responsible for the drum sounds on the first two Queen albums that I, er, Roy Thomas Baker preferred and Roger and Brian hated? The whole world of how people mic things is fascinating to me. I've heard about mic's in cement blocks, garbage cans, and just read about Nuno Bettencourt recording the solo for Stop the World by placing a mic in between his headphones. |

It really wasn't that great, she has a nice voice but there have been much better covers than this. Having said that I couldn't do much better so fair play to Brittany Murphy for that. |

But the Queen I drum sound sounds like it was closed miked. And recorded in a very dead sounding room. Ofcourse in later albums the drums would also be recorded with mics close to the drums, but there would also be placed microphones around the room, to capture the whole sound of the drums inside a good sounding room. It's quite amazing what you can do with recording. I love experimenting with it. Trying to record stuff with a headphone is cool as well! |

the video is funny, the version of the song is horrible, - really wish i'd never listened to that. |
deleted user 11.11.2006 20:57 |
Oh no she didn't! That's my favorite Queen song (if I had to pick one) and the only one to pull it off besides Freddie is George Michael! She killed it. |
boca 29.11.2006 02:11 |
I don't even want to listen that... |
gnomo 29.11.2006 07:03 |
... not really bad on the whole, but the singing is all there is to it - where's the feeling, and the passion...? |
mola 29.11.2006 14:00 |
i'm slightly confused with this version but a penguin singing instead of freddie is an extraordinary hilarious vision :D but to be completely honest, i do not appreciate this cover *puke* xD think i'm going to see it on the big screen (but wonder if it'll be dubbed... if so, it's going to be even worse. or maybe better who knows xD) |

As stated previously, nobody is ever really going to prefer a cover to the original but she can hold a note and that's all that's needed for a kid's Christmas film. The singing style of that clip did remind me of the American Idol Queen edition: generic and lacking in soul but, I doubt a lot of viewers of the movie will care. Personally I prefer movies where they just use the original song in the soundtrack (Scorsese does that to great effect) it's a good way to boost awareness of bands and singers. |
