I was listning to some pink floyd the other day and i think that Nick Mason is often under rated, although he aint to original, he still plays some pretty good stuff. Also Rick Allen from Def Leppard is totaly under rated, before he lost his arm he played some totaly amazing stuff, after he lost his arm he was even more amazing. What drummers do you think are under rated?? |

Pat Torpey Chad Smith and I dunno... 8-) Ringo Starr is really underrated, he's a good drummer |
Drummer imense! 28.10.2006 17:31 |
Yeah i agree ringo starr is under rated, never been a big fan of his playing though, but i can see where you're coming from, a band is only as good as the sum of its parts.... so he must have done something right :) |
Rick 28.10.2006 18:11 |
Dennis Wilson. He has really a good sense of rhythem. And he could sing very good too. |
Eviltwin 28.10.2006 18:18 |
I always thought Bun E. Carlos was under-rated. |

Shelia E---underrated woman drummer, toured with the artist Prince for a number of years, was in Ringo Starr's all star band...of course sadly, women musicians are and will always be underrated to me :( Question: Does anyone else know anyother good women drummers? |

Ringo is underrated, I agree. Sure, everybody can say the Beatles are the greatest band, but not many will say Ringo's a great drummer. But he is! I especially like Helter Skelter; it's simple, but effective (i got blisters on my fingers! lol) The others you all mentioned are underrated too, imo. Here's some more: Pick Withers, formerly of Dire Straits Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz, "Weird Al" Yankovic's drummer (he's good, especially with Al's parodies) Rick Allen of Def Leppard (One arm, but still one hell of a drummer) Neil Peart of Rush (not many people mention his name out loud, but he's probably the best drummer I've heard; no offense to RT) yeah, that's about it. |

Ringo and of course Roger Taylor. |
iGSM 30.10.2006 10:36 |
He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles. I don't think Ringo is under-rated, just not like Keith Moon and the other flurry of mad drummers in the 60's :) |

Dave Grohl... awesome with Nirvana. Check out his performance on 'No One Knows' by Queens of the Stoneage. Ringo on the other hand is an underated actor. Out of the awful performances on film by the other 3 Beatles, Ringo was the only one who showed some character charm on screen. |

I might note that many great jazz drummers are underrated, but only because of the genre of music by which they choose to partake in. They do not receive much credit from the layman for their drumming, which is far superior to rock standards. Of course, in their own circles (jazz enthusiasts, drummers, etc.), they are lauded as the greatest ever, but if you were to ask any old person on the street, who would they name? Some names you might hear are Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Phil Collins, Mick Fleetwood, Keith Moon, Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, Cozy Powell, Ringo Starr, Alex Van Halen, or Max Weinberg, some more than others. But you will seldom, if ever, hear of Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, Gene Krupa, or Dave Weckl. And the great Buddy Rich can sometimes even be overlooked. But ask any real drummer, or musically knowledgeable person, and these names will certainly almost always come up. |

Roger Taylor has surely gotta be up there as one the most under-rated drummers!? In my opinion, he's one of the few drummers who you hear and think "that's Rog". As soon as his hi-hat opens with the snare, you know it's him. Yet, he's over-looked, similar to how Brian can be overlooked for the likes of Page, Townsend etc (not to diss these two, but I'm not their biggest fans, despite their skill). Obviously Bonham is the possibly the greatest [rock] drummer of all time, and then there's Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell et al, but is pains me that Rog is overlooked. But I like the fact that people like Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins talk about Rog and rate him, especially Taylor (christ, he "changed" his name from Oliver to Taylor, how much more of a fan do you get!?). Then again, I often think that Taylor Hawkins gets overlooked as a drummer simply because he's in a band with Grohl. Sometimes - just sometimes - I think that Hawkins might techincally be a better drummer than Grohl, but then I listen to him play on Songs For The Deaf and think that actually Grohl is better. Then again, if you can find a video of Taylor Hawkins doing his one-handed drum roll, you might think again. |

Was i serious about what??? That rick allan only has one arm now, or that he's a good drummer? Personally i think he's good :) |

When you lose an arm and your drumming doesn't sound any different afterwards. He had an arm for Pyromania, right? Well, the Hysteria album's got that same "quantized" feel to it. Maybe it's me. And maybe we could gate that snare a little more so you can't tell if it's hitting on the 2 or the 3. |
Drummer imense! 31.10.2006 18:18 |
Thats a very good point! I always found that the tone sounded pretty much the same in hysteria as it did do in the past, although he was doing more interesting stuff, which comes from using feet rather then hands i guess. |

That means the drumming on the first album wasn't all that impressive. |
Micrówave 01.11.2006 12:09 |
Actually, about all I can listen to is High and Dry, but after that I'm out. Now if we WERE talking about those first two albums, then ok. They're a good band, I just think that the batterie department is the weak spot. |

I wouldn't say he quite does five things at once (unless he has a stick in his mouth too)! It's just simple rolling of the hi-hat with clever snare and bass pedal. You should check his Red Hot Rhymths DVD with Flea, absolute class - you can view some of it on YouTube actually... link |
