Hey People, I have been a Queen fan since some 16 years now, but always open minded towards other bands, specifically those with some artistic quality, such as Radiohead. I had always liked Muse since their first albums, but I regarded them mostly as a quitar band making decent songs. This changed with their last album, although some more synths and dance influences are noticable, Black Holes and Revelations has some tracks on it, that after a few rounds of playing made me start thinking; "wow, this is good"! Further more, I started to notice that some of the work on this album bears resemblance with the work of Queen. Especially the track Knights of Cydonia, which has a strong Queen II feel over it. I never read though, that Michael Bellamy from Muse has ever stated to be influenced by Queen. Reviews of concerts do make the comparison between the bands. What are your opinions of this? Is Muse artiscally worth being compared to Queen? Or was their last album with brilliant tracks such as the eralier mentioned Knighths of Cydonia, City of Delusion and HooDoo, just a lucky shot? |
The Fairy King 18.10.2006 03:12 |
It's Matthew Bellamy and yes they deserve the comparisation cuz they're brilliant. The only similarities i can think of is that they take risks, the harmonies and the groundbreaking shows. |

I always laugh heartily when people on this panel talk about how there's no good bands around 'these days'. Muse are quite simply, brilliant. Between them and Tool, they exemplify all that there is to love about music yesterday, today and for years to come. Queen will always be my first choice as the band most dear to me -but I can tell you this- I've seen both Queen and Muse live before (the real Queen that is) and there is no contest- Muse were staggeringly good. Queen were 'only' very good. But as a front-man, Freddie wins hands down. |
Mr.Jingles 18.10.2006 09:11 |
I recall once Matt mentioning how on 'Absolution' they wanted to adopt a Queen type of layered vocals. |

There is so much nostalgia about music being better in the 70's, whereas we now have some very good bands. Tool are good, muse --> fantastic, Radiohead --> fantastic, but also (less well known) bands with good songs are e.g. Interpol, Belle and Sebastian, Mintzkov Luna and the Magic Numbers. |

The only time in history where I recall that there were almost no good bands was the late 90s. Personally I think that was the worst period in music becuase it was dominated by rappers, boy bands, lame alternative bands, and slutty pop tarts. To make matters worse, many of the bands who were once good started to fade away. Nowdays there's much better bands to listen to. |

I've been a Muse fan since their 1st album and always thought there was some Queen in them (listen to the beginning of Cave for instance, I hear Brian play every time...) though the lads themselves used to deny this - until recently that is. On Black Holes... the Queen references are so obvious - especially on Knights... and even more on Soldier's Poem. What both bands have in common is a tendency to border on kitsch (which I like if it's not done too often...) plus of course both have/had a brilliant singer and guitarist and write just great pop tunes. |

I wouldn't call the songs of Muse and Queen just pop songs though, it goes a bit beyond that. I agree with the point made earlier on that in the (late) 1990's we had very little good rock music. At least not my stile of rock music. |

I am a Muse freak!!!! I became a fan last year and I'm looking foward to see them live this november :D. I adore the fact that Matt is a Queen fan, and teh fact that the band re-invents with every album. I can't choose a favorite song liek with Absolution and with BH&R. I really hope they can last as long as Queen lasted :D!!!! |

Muse is 100x better than that shitass, no-talent band Coldplay. I mean for fuck's sake, Chris Martin can't sing for shit... Anyway, it's like this - Radiohead is the new Pink Floyd while Muse is the new Queen...nah, they're not THAT good but still, 100x better than Coldplay. |

Funny how everyone is making comparisons between todays bands and those of the old times. What I found dissapointing is that the Knights of Cydonia, while being released as a single, has hardly been a success. I guess the time of bombastic rock opera is now really over. A pity imho. I always have lived with the thought that many many people would still recognize good music. Unfortunately they don't.. :( |

I always have lived with the thought that many many people would still recognize good music. Unfortunately they don't.. :(Thanks to MTV and the media as a whole. The public's appreciation for quality music slowly diminished, while the focus on the image slowly grew. We know things are bad when Nickelback and Evanescence are amongst the most successful of today's rock bands. Nickelback uses the same structure for every song, and Amy Lee sings on stage with a pitch corrector. Tell me something is wrong, please! |
ITSM 06.02.2007 12:36 |
It sounds like the singing-guy in Muse records his singing while sitting on a toilet.. I know it's childish, but that's what it sounds like (I think, and many of my friends)... I thought that "Muscle Museum" was cool the first 8 times I heard it, and I bought the CD. But I don't like it at all! |
Saif 06.02.2007 22:29 |
I have to disagree, but oh well, to each his own. Starlight is a good song...no - EXCELLENT by today's standards. You know, it surprises me when people put Amy Lee on the top of their list when asked who the 5 best singers are in their opinion. C'mon, we're not talking about bottom 5 here. *rolls eyes* Yeah, it's good to see that atleast SOMEONE here isn't blinded by the Evanescence meme. It's just another fad which will fade away soon. Goth rock is SO stupid. |

Love Muse. Saw them last year in Antwerp and hopefully will see them again at Pinkpop this year. Great band, talented, original. I can see where the comparison with Queen comes from, but I also do think Muse is very different in many ways. |

Being in the states I havn't heard much of muse, so Is this band worth checking out?...The last time I listened to music fans from england I was led to believe robbie williams was better than Queen and elvis combined, so obviously I couldn't wait to hear this great vocalist. I put it in my CD player and after the first song I realized I just wasted 18 dollars on a load of crap. |

If you like it, then go for their newest one, "Black Holes And Revelations". They have a very British sound for sure. They are incredibly intelligent musicians, and it clearly shows. Their chord progressions, melodies, phrasing, lyrics, and songwriting as a whole is pretty much unrivaled in today's mainstream. I would love to find more bands of this pristine quality. But it's worth pointing out the difference in the quality of the North American the European mainstreams. Here, Muse plays venues that hold one or two thousand people. They could never sell out arenas here, because most people here are fully immersed in bubble-gum pop, 4-chord rock bands, and rap. In Europe, however, they're playing some of the places that Queen played in their heyday (Vienna Stadhalle, Dusseldorf Philipshalle, Birmingham NEC, etc.). There have always been cultural differences in musical tastes, but it speaks wonders when at the moment, Billy Talent, Evanescence, Nickelback, and Default are the most successful rock bands in North America. Dream Theater and Muse are among the bands conquering Europe these days, and Nickelback gets booed off the stage (did you hear about that show in Portugal a couple years ago?). I digress. In the UK, Muse are on their way to being one of the most successful bands in the last couple decades. They're going to play two nights at the new Wembley, for crying out loud. Not many bands could sell out one night at Wembley, never mind two! The second night hasn't sold out yet, but surely it will. What other band that we all know and love played two nights at Wembley at the peak of their success? Hmmmmmmm...? :) |
Saif 07.02.2007 12:24 |
Haha, now you're scaring me. But you're right. The British Invasion ended long ago and it was thought for a long time that a British band wouldn't be able to top the US charts in this day and age. But fucking hell, this was proved to be wrong later...but why the fuck did it have to be Coldplay? And this is not only for the US, they also topped the UK charts too and I think they're already outselling Oasis(a good band) in terms of total albums. Talk about OVERRATED. They're a 4-chord rock band too. As I said before, CHRIS MARTIN CAN'T SING FOR SHIT. Their lyrics are LAME, they depress me. 99% of their music is plagiarized from some other source. Fucking hell, I'm really happy that artistic bands like Radiohead, Muse, etc. have found success in South America and the rest of Europe. Coldplay is probably the gayest band I've ever heard and I DEEPLY regret listening to them due to my idiotic friend(who I completely hate now). Robbie Williams is gay too. The little faggot thinks he's Jim Morrison. |

Buy "Absolution" first. Give it a couple listens. If you like it, then go for their newest one, "Black Holes And Revelations".Good post, but I think a Queen fan might gravitate towards Black Holes and Revelations first. Either way, you won't be dissapointed. Of course, what cemented it for me was seeing a DVD of them - Matt Bellamy is a throwback as a performer, and it's hard to believe the energy he puts into his show while still playing and singing so well. I think the best comparison of Muse and Queen lies in their use of dynamic, or as Jimmy Page puts it, "white and black" in the same song. I heard that Muse plays I Want to Break Free before breaking into Knights of Cydonia - anyone hear this? Oh yeah, and Stockholm Syndrome is a great track - reminds me of early Queen, and that's a damn good thing. |

Muse is fantastic.I recently bought 'Absolution'and I listen to it a lot. They know how to write songs that are catchy and have musical merit at the same time. That's what makes you truly a great band. They always pick their singles very good too. They are a singles band aswell as an album band(like Queen in the seventies). Some of the 'more serious press' (in my country anyway)always talks about coldplay, oasis and stuff like that. That's something I will never understand. For me music is about taking risks, doing different things, being dynamic and knowing how to play. I don't know much about Muse live but I know that when Coldplay is playing live a tape is rolling(and not only to record the show:-)That is not what i consider playing live;-)Oasis, coldplay, they are poor instrumentalists(in my opinion)I really like the changes Muse went through too. They only get better, more mature. I hope they can continue this quality of music. By the way:I read a funny story about bellamy:they were sitting by a fire backstage and a Belgian band gave him their album. The belgian band walked away and they saw bellamy going towards the fire and they thought:o no, he's going to put our CD in the fire. They went back and jumped on matt and took back their cd.Matt said:what do you do?It's here so dark, I just want to read the booklet:-) |
