Judging by the list of artists, it was a fantastic festival. My point is, this is something seldom seen debated here on QZ. I mean, for once in a lifetime, just the "Sonic Vulcano" sharing a stage, billed as Queen?? Come on! That is something worth debating! I've seen some info on queenconcerts, regards to Mr. Scully, but does anybody know: - Under what circunstances both of them were invited (i am guessing Brian was busy with his own solo stuff); - Who was the musicians that played with them? - Did Roger and/or John played in other artists's sets? I mean, this is the set from queenconcerts. Did both of them played in all songs? Apart from Bites the Dust (paul young???), did Roger sang all the other Queen songs? 01. A Kind Of Magic 02. I Want To Break Free 03. We Will Rock You 04. Another One Bites The Dust (Paul Young on vocals) 05. These Are The Days Of Our Lives 06. Radio Ga Ga 07. Turn It On Again (with Genesis) 08. Hold On To My Heart (with Genesis) 09. I Can't Dance (with Genesis) 10. Tonight (with Genesis) 11. Invisible Touch (with Genesis) 12. Stone Free (with Eric Clapton) 13. Old Love (with Eric Clapton) 14. Gimme Some Lovin (All Star finale) 15. Ain't That Peculiar (All Star finale) 16. Can I Get A Witness (All Star finale) Any further info will be much appreciated! Thank You! |

Yes, Roger sang all the other Queen songs and he played on at least some of the other artists sets. (Cannot remember by heart which ones exactly...) |

I was there (you had to dress up in a Dinner Jacket to stand in a field!) Issue 9 of POTU had a full review from the event. Roger was on drums for Genesis and Eric Clapton and all artists finale(note Josh Macrae played drums during the Queen set) |
Al TurHao 14.10.2006 08:13 |
POTUeditor, could you please post the link to the review? Thanks! How about John? Did he played in other artist's set? Are there any photos of the event? Who played lead guitar to the Queen tracks? Spike played the keys? (Boy did they do AKOM fast tempo!) |
POTUeditor 14.10.2006 08:51 |
Adrian Lee was on keyboards and Jason Falloon (it rhymes with Balloon) on guitar. I have no photos and there is no link to the review (it was in an independent fanzine before the days of mass internet saturation) Do have a few old copies in a cupboard somewhere though. I do believe there was a photo from the gig of John in a fan club magazine and I know of at least 1 fan who had a camera there so somewhere yes there are photos. John sported a cap covering a long (grey) hairstyle. Unlike Roger John did not feature in anyone else's sets (or even the grand finale). Hope this helps |

lol - Jason Baffoon! ;-) Anyway; yes there has indeed been one picture of John in a fanclub mag in those days. It was a backstage shot though, showing John with grey/white LOOONG hair (!!). Quote that went with the pic: "I thought I'd better grow it before I lost it"... ;-) |

Could you post the pic? Take care |

I remember the mag, and I found the picture on here: link |

I was lucky enough to score a backstage pass for this event - if I remember correctly, Frank Palstra got my setlist from this event. If anyone is interested, I still have a few official programs left somewhere here. There were people in the audience with videocameras for sure, but I do not know whether any material any surfaced. Rgds, Mark |

There is a John-playing-at-CR-live on the cover of the mag... radio_whats_new... do your stuff! ;-) |

I just googled it, and it seems that Pink Floyd and Genesis fans took this festival more serious, so it´s possible that some Pink Floyd fans might own a good version of this concert (video???). Take care |

I have a gold Marantz cd (where the data side is green) from this concert, called 'Cowdray Ruins Concert 1993'. This was created in a very very limited run (less than 10), since back then, hardly anyone had a cd burner. Empty discs themselves cost almost 20 Euros... Maybe large run copies have been later from this disc. I dunno. Tracks are: Queen - AKOM, IWTBF, WWRY, AOBTD, RG Genesis - Turn It On Again, I Can't Dance, Invisible Touch Pink Floyd - Run Like Hell, Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb Eric Clapton - Stone Free, Old Love The Ruins Band - Gimme Some Loving |

I believe it's available to download in the 'announce' section; have a look :-) Hey, mv45 does your cd-r still play? This cd-r and all other early cd-r's I have from those days are now totally rotten... It already starded very fast, only after about a dozen of plays. But now... Clicks, skips, surfing; the lot. Totally unplayable... |

I scanned the complete report, from Neils excellent "Princes of the universe" fanzine... Thanks N.! "Jurassic Park Blues" Neil French dons his evening suit to report from the charity concert held in Cowdray Park, Midhurst, Sussex on 18th September and featuring our own John Deacon and Roger Taylor. Now I must admit that I've done some crazy things in order to satisfy my passion for Queen but paying £80 and wearing a dinner suit (complete with dicky bow) to stand in a field must rank up there as one of the silliest. However to see a rare glimpse of a certain Mr. Deacon it was a sacrifice I was willing to make (as was missing the Bon Jovi concert I was originally planning to see on the same night). The concert was taking place to raise funds for the local King Edward VII Hospital and to commemorate the fire which gutted the castle in the park grounds exactly 200 years previously and featured, aswell as our own Roger T. and John D., members of Genesis, Pink Floyd and Eric Clapton. It was an event where I didn't know what to expect (questions in my mind included would Roger sing?, Would they play any Queen songs?, How involved in the show would they be? Only time would tell.) When I arrived many of the audience were already indulging in their champagne picnics. One of the first things to happen was the arrival of some skydivers (also in dinner suits) before we were allowed to approach the stage pst as the opening band the Bigtown Playboys' started. They were very impressive indeed and the singer/keyboards player was particularly talented. They played a set of about 45 minutes of R '0' B I Jive type music which certainly got the evening off on the right foot. After an interval of about 20 minutes or so there was then an … continued…: |

appearance by Richard O'Brien (of Rocky Horror and Crystal Maze fame) to announce the winners of a competition involving beermats collected by the skydivers when they landed. Then Richard Skinner, from the event sponsors Virgin 1215, introduced a video about the hospital which was quite farcical as we couldn't see the video screen, it being located back in the picnic area! As our impatience for the show to begin grew Paul Ross, also of Virgin 1215, spent an age to introduce John and Roger as the first of the major bands to take the stage. Opening with an excellent rendition of 'A Kind Of Magic' Roger was taking lead vocals with Josh Macrae on drums. Adrian Lee was on keyboards with Jason Falloon on lead guitar. At this point I have a confession to make, I didn't even recognise poor old John at first! Maybe it was because we haven't seen him for so long or perhaps because he was wearing a cap and sporting a new long hair style. A second closer look confirmed that it was indeed that rarest of breeds the lesser spotted John Deacon on Bass. With 'Magic' completed Roger then welcomed us to 'Jurassic Park' which brought a laugh from the crowd before he added 'sorry Cowdray Park.' The next number was a first for Roger on vocals as he sang John's composition '1 Want To Break Free' and made a good job of it too. Not quite so good was the new rap like version of 'We Will Rock You', as featured at The Cross Gosport show, which followed and had Roger struggling slightly for the words. John's bass at the start of the song was quite good though. Next Roger took a back seat to join Josh on drums as Paul Young (of Sad Cafe and Mike and The Mechanics not of tribute concert) took over the vocals for another Deacon penned number 'Another One Bites The Dust'. Unfortunately he suffered from a similar fate as Roger in the previous song of not knowing the words properly and this slightly spoilt this number.Roger was back on vocals for 'These Are The Days Of Our Lives', a regular feature of recent Cross shows and every bit as good and emotional here. Finally after introducing all of the band to the audience they finished their mini set with 'Radio GaGa'. Only cabout a third or so of the crowd joined in the clapping (remember it wasn't really a Queen audience) which was slightly disappointing but as a finale it was a fine finish. 1 was also fascinated by John's bass playing technique during this number, very laid back, almost nonchalant. As the band left the stage the crowd cheered acknowledging their enjoyment of tbeir performance Although it had only been a short set of about 25 minutes I too was content with the show. After all when I bought the ticket for all I knew Roger may just have been playing drums and John bass as part of a larger supergroup wifh little (if any) Queen involvement. As the band left the stage Roger remained to introduce the next band, Genesis, whom it was obvious the majority of the crowd had come to see as they got a rousing welcome. Roger then took his place behind his drums as he stayed on stage for the whole of their excellent balf hour set which included amongst others (and not in order) 'Invisible Touch', 'Tonight, Tonight, Tonight' and the highlight of the show for me 'I Can't Dance'. Just as Roger had remained after his set so too did Mike Rutherford after tbeir's as he introduced Pink Floyd and remained on bass. Roger had now left tbe stage and Floyd proceeded with a set of only 3 songs. Lasting less than 20 minutes I was somewhat surprised tbat their set was curtailed so swiftly and felt pleased to myself that Roger and John had not been quite so limited. Next on the agenda was Eric Clapton who was greeted with wild enthusiasm and also saw the return of Mr. Taylor on drums where he had been doing a sterling job with his normal meticulous precision. Clapton stayed for just two songs the first, 'Stone Free' , was a cover of a Hendrix number and the second, 'Old Love', he dedicated to his ex-wife and was t |

Wow, thank you very much. For the info, for the (sometimes rare) kindness and politeness in your answers. Nice to see a rare and obscure yet interesting chapter in the post-Freddie period being debated like this. JOHN DEACON RULES!!! His absence and silence cry intelligence and greatnedd out loud, if you all know what i mean. Too bad he didn't went for the encore. |

Hey, the elder among us can be quite civilised! ;-) But most of us are a mirror of the other posters ;-) Ask a moron question - get a moron reply Ask a good question - get a good reply ;-) Too bad a lot of people (most of them in the first cathegory as mentioned above, don't realise that ;-) |

Yeah, Jeroen, I know what you mean. Just out of curiosity, let me just tell you a little trivia. Prior to the Lisbon Concert (2nd July 2005), I read about the "Roger AAAAAHHHH Congretation" (notice I did spell it right :) and I thought it was a very funny and curious thing to do. So, I told my friends who went to the concert with me and we did scream our hearts out in many parts of the show the Roger AAAAAHHHH scream. Later, when I downloaded the concert (by the way I have two versions, different audience places), I found that our scream could be heard just in the beggining of his drum solo!! LOL, what a feeling to know it's us! Well, I just thought you would like to know this. Cheers, man! ;) |
Jjeroen 16.10.2006 10:12 |
LOLlOlLOlLOlL! Wow! That's amazing! So after twelve years we now have an offspring in other countries that we didn't even know about?! I know the feeling: you can hear us (or me alone in one case ;-) on bootlegs from Rotterdam, Antwerpen, Frankfurt, Dortmund, Milano, Arnhem and Cleveland! ;-) (Well, that's talking about the QPR-tour only - we're on even more bootlegs from Roger solo shows...) But... on a serious note!! I don't seem to remember that any of you passed our membership-test!!! I think I have to have a serious talk with the other members of the administration about this! Officially you are bootleg Roger AAAAAHHHHH-crew members! (But nevertheless I hope that maybe with the next tour we can all meet eachother somewhere in Europe to officially inaugurate you and make the loudest Roger AAAAAHHHH ever!! ;-) |
Al TurHao 16.10.2006 19:48 |
LOL Yes, almost everyone around here is a bootlegger, so it's poetic justice to bootleg a bootlegger. :) I mind not to pass the test, jeroen. Bring it on! lol Cheers and yes. Educated and nice fans should always meet. Feel free to add me on your messenger! My contact is allowed. |
