The wit and cheek was delivered with pin-point precision. 'Love on the rocks with no ice', 'Givin' up' and 'Get your hands off my woman'... pure class. And the rock falsetto didn't come anywhere near that done by Ian Gillan or Roger Taylor. Fuck, Ted Neeley as well. You shouldn't have been listening to anyone 'comparing' them to anything, because they didn't have a leg to stand on. 1. Nickelback sucks in a way that is truly profound. This is coming from a Vancouverite. 2. Permission To Land was a putrid album - I wondered why we only saw 2 singles released, then I downloaded it and realized that no radio station in the world would play anything else off of it. I'm a fully-certified swearist and appreciate profanity in it's right place, but the shite they put on that album was neither needed, nor convincing. It was truly awful. 3. Feeling sorry for millionaire musicians who suffer for their own self-destructive habits is like feeling sorry for any other Darwin Award winner. Is this 1970? Is rock excess a new thing that no one knows about? Did Justin not know cocaine is an illegal drug with serious side-effects? Poor fucking baby. Somehow when a celebrity puts a gun to their head and pulls the trigger, we're all shocked when the bullet does it's job. Grow up - guy's a tard. 4. Nickelback sucks. Did I say that? |
The Real Wizard 13.10.2006 12:14 |
I'm tired of people cutting The Darkness to shreds because they are influenced by Queen. You wanna know why this happens? It's because so few bands show off an influence of Queen, since their sound is difficult to emulate, and cannot be accomplished by most. So, one band finally comes along who proudly show off their love for Queen, and then stepford fans and critics alike all blast them, as if nobody is allowed to be influenced by Queen. We should be proud that The Darkness kept some elements of Queen's sound alive in today's mainstream. I'm sad to hear the band won't be continuing with Justin. But for his personal reasons, I think he's doing the right thing. In the 70s and 80s, how many bands were influenced by Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and AC/DC? Millions. In the mainstream, hundreds. Because their sound was so adaptable, anyone could take elements from these bands, and never be accused of "ripping off", because everyone else was doing it too. To add to that list of Zeppelin rip-off bands, a band called Queen is right on the top of the list. Listen to the first album. Sure, there are original things on there, but 3 or 4 songs could have found their spot on Led Zeppelin I or II. And why don't we post threads here saying Queen were Beatles rip-offs? Queen's catalogue, especially much of the earlier stuff, is dripping with Beatlesque sounds. |
Mr.Jingles 13.10.2006 12:25 |
There's a huge difference between being highly influenced by a band and carbon copying someone else's sound. Foo Fighters and Extreme were probably more influenced by Queen than any other band, yet they sound nothing like them. |

I beg to differ. You can tell the Foo Fighters are influenced by Queen. You don't necessarily hear it, but you can feel it.Yes, don't trust your ears. Reach out with your feelings, Luke. Then you will feel the Foo connection. Um, no. I like Foo Fighter's sound, and I know they're big Queen fans, but I've never heard a song by them that I could say was influenced by Queen - in fact, most of their stuff is basic power chord rock. As a frontman / songwriter myself (don't bother flaming me for that, I know I'm a nobody), I can tell you that I hold Queen's music so dear that I would never write a Queen-ish song, nor perform in a Freddie-like way, other than perhaps a one-off tribute song, because that's sacred. I think the Foo's are probably the same way. While I agree with Sir GH that bands shouldn't be condemned solely for being influenced by Queen (and that Queen took a great deal from the Fab 4 and Zep) there must be a standard of judgement. It's people like Justin Hawkins and Robbie Williams who blatantly steal elements from Queen for their whole act, and cash in on the love and nostalgia their own limited talent can't generate. I mean, come on - sequined cat suits, half mike stands, excessive falsetto? They're plainly wannabes and should be flamed for that - there's a fine line between influence and imitation. |

Mmm, yes. 5 years piano, 2 years guitar, 15 years vocal. I can see where this is going though - when you listen to the Foo's, you hear Queen somewhere in there. I personally think Dave and the boys are talented enough to have carved their own path, and hear nothing of Queen in their style. Let's agree to disagree, mmmkay? I would actually rate the Darkness a lot higher than Robbie Williams. Squaky voice aside, the Darkness were tidy musicians. Robbie Williams genuinely can't do anything very well; his sole selling point of being a 'good entertainer' means jack shit to me, because I actually sat down to watch one of his Knebworth gigs and it was boring *shite*. And just taking a quick look through the outfits of the 70's, I think it'd be pretty naive to claim The Darkness were stealing purely from Queen. We *know* they're big fans of Queen and that's probably where most of their ideas come from, but at the same time.... there was a slightly bigger picture going on back then, it wasn't just Queen. Open your eyes nimrods! |

We love Zebonka. I have just always assumed by how much emphasis was put on how the band got it's idea to come together when they heard Justin sing BoRhap "perfectly, even all the opera bits" that Queen was their main influence. The fact that they chose a rather obscure 70's music producer name Roy Thomas Baker, of all people, to produce their second album also kind of points in that direction. Maybe I'm wrong. But on the other hand, maybe I'm a duck-billed platypus. |
