Just wanna hear what all your thoughts are on Queen as a heavy rock band. Obviously they were in to many stlyes so they were not stero typed in that way, but when they went heavy would you agree,,,, that could go heavy!!!,,, I mean, certain bands are touted as heavy Metall acts and thats all. Queen could do heavy metall very well, but say how heavy compared to aerosmith, metalica, def lepard and so on.......even though Queen influenced many hard rock bands....I got my thoughts, just wanna yours??? |

Well, Brian is well-known to be the "heavy" writer of the group and I'd say Freddie come close to him: it's quite easy to find a heavy side for Queen (the good thing is they did everything: vaudeville, ballades, spoof opera, classic pop...). The thing I like about their heavy song is that it's not excessively heavy, means you can hear it whenever you want because it's a quite rocky but soft heavy. Just my opinion, I'm not a specialist. |

this has caused many arguements amongst friends i have & i always prefered Queen as a heavy band & i think thats what they did best |

Queen were at their very best when they were doing their "own thing". he fact that they could write catchy pop songs counted against them during the 1980's when they were hoodwinked by EMI / QPL into churning out material that would be successful in the charts. Their first 7 albums have some stunning rock moments on them - especially Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack. This is the material that Metallica, Extreme, Def Leppard etc refered to when they told of Queen's influence on them. |

Interesting snippet from the German Wikipedia, topic "Hard Rock", comparison "Hard Rock"/"Heavy Metal": "So gelten die Vertreter der ersten Phase des Hardrocks um Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin oder auch Queen oft als beiden Stilrichtungen gleichermaßen zugehörig, während die später gegründeten Bands der zweiten Phase um AC/DC, Aerosmith und Kiss üblicherweise und nach eigenem Verständnis ausschließlich als Hardrock bezeichnet werden." Translation: "The protagonists of the first phase of Hard Rock like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin or to some extent Queen were part of both styles equally, while the later founded bands of the second phase like AC/DC, Aerosmith and Kiss normally and by thir own comprehension are solely categorized as hard rock." Personally I wouldn't call Queen a heavy metal band. Which song should count as Heavy Metal?? Nothing with Freddie on vocals! Maybe "Modern Times R'n'R" ... but not really. |

I think Queen had invented a new sound, really. So melodic and surprising with a bit of heaviness to it and that had never been done before. Led Zep maybe ... but Led Zep was kind of repetitive. Queen was like Mozart getting his hands on a Led Zep song. |

I once remember reading that in 1974 the middle section of Father To Son where Brian does the CC D E, CC D E power chord thing, was the arguably the heaviest piece or rock music yet to be recorded. |

Stone Cold Crazy to me is a song that I think labels Queen as a heavy metal band back then. I also think that this song is probably one of the first "metal" songs in music. Now here are going to come the arguements, lol. |

Interesting. I suppose when you isolate the heavy songs from the softer songs, not placing soft as week term in anyway, just saying when you look at the heavy stuff what comes to mind is "sheer heart attak" cant go past "stone cold crazy",,, ther are many more, i suppose at the end of the day as we all know they did many styles, they did execute many styles with great results and for the heavy stuff, i think when evey they wanted to could pull it of no worries, i do feel freddies voice did compliment the songs because its not the size of the dog in the fight its the size of the fight in the dog... you know what i mean... |

Queen was oftenly at their best when they did Hard Rock or Heavy Metal. They could do good Pop Rock and all that stuff as well, but if we say it like this: Queen 73-79: Great music, low amounts of shit, lots of heavy and progressive stuff. Queen 80-85: Queen losts their touch and turns all poppy. The Works is still one of my favorite albums, but the Hot Space and The Game sucks... I don't count Flash Gordon as a real album. Queen 86-90: Queen understands that fans wants heavy, and gives us songs like Princes Of The Universe (definantly Heavy Metal), Gimme The Prize (wich is not good at all, but it is heavy), I Want It All, Was It All Worth It?... They are doing hard rock again. Queen 91: Innuendo and The Hitman shows us that Queen still know how to do heavy stuff. Really heavy stuff. Queen 92-present: Well, we just got Made In Heaven... Wich is Pop Rock. Fuck. For those that say that Queen ain't metal, please listen to the following songs: Ogre Battle Princes Of The Universe Stone Cold Crazy White Man Was It All Worth It? (the riff: I know it is quite light at some spots, but the riff weights a ton) It's Late Innuendo The Hitman Modern Times Rock n' Roll Liar Son And Daughter That's heavy stuff. |

I would too consider early Queen as a band who could play heavy metal as well. Besides, one interesting point is that being a YES and prog rock fan I found out that Queen's first three/four albums and Innuendo are highly acclaimed in prog rock circles. |

Back in the 70s, US fans would prefer the heavy songs, and Europe would, I wouldn't say prefer, but accept the soft songs. Europe got 'Spread Your Wings' US got 'It's Late' Europe got 'Save Me' US got 'Need Your Loving Tonight' A lot of classic rock radio stations in the USA today, don't play much love songs or pop songs with a ton of keyboards and synthesizers. No A Kind Of Magic, Radio GaGa, I Want To Break Free, Who Wants To Live Forever, and they usually only play top 10 hits with exceptions. A lot of US fans were wondering what happened to Queen in 1980. Queen released the wrong songs as singles. Tear It Up, Put Out The Fire, and Gimme The Prize should of been singles. Tear It Up and Put Out The Fire were being played on radio. But the singles released were things like Body Language, Calling All Girls, I Want To Break Free, Radio GaGa... which, are songs that I never hear on classic rock radio stations, due to the excessive amount of either dance music or synths or keyboards, and drum machines. I do know Radio GaGa was my local radio stations 'theme' in 2004... but that's because it said "Radio GaGa" and it was by a classic rock band, but I've only heard it once or twice on the radio. It's strange, they do play Another One Bites The Dust a lot, but it's not even near hard rock. |

The first three albums show us what a great heavy metal band Queen were. Loads of heavy metal songs on those records. The white side of QueenII has Led Zeppelin written all over it. I think it was the succes of Killer Queen that made them write more commercially, and in the process, they forgot their heavy metal roots. Just listen to the ADATR. White Man is the only song I would call heavy metal. (TYMD was often furious in live settings, but on the album it's just your average rocker.) |

Let's talk about the band and all their albums together. Queen is a .... Band. Heavy, I don't think... Queen is a Great Band. I don't want to think further about it. |

Although some of my favourite Queen songs are among the heavier ones, such as the majority of Queen II, Headlong, Hitman etc, I wouldn't really consider them a "heavy band" as such, but rather a good all-round one that had its heavy moments. |
