right i keep being requested to post in flac....let me know the best programs to use for converting to:- flac lossless converting from cine film to dvd reel to reel tape to..????? editing dvds joining dvd files dvd to avi/mpeg editing videos if i get this help then i will post in these formats.can't be no fairer than that.???????????? |

Andy, "Lossless" is just an adjective describing the fact that FLAC format doesn't diminish the quality. It's not an actual format, so no need to worry about that. FLAC files can be created from WAV files with a program called "Flac Frontend". You simply select the WAV files, select "level 8", and click on "decode". Simple as that. TMPGEnc is the program I use for converting video from one format to another, and I use Ulead MediaStudio Pro 8.0 for editing video. Since I haven't had experience with cine film and reel to reel, I can't help you there. Perhaps someone else can. Good luck. |

For analog audio (reel to reel, cassette etc) you need to be able to connect the source player to your soundcard through the 3.5 mini jack on the back.. or even better through 2 x RCA phonos (if you've got them)... then get hold of Adobe Audtion. You can use Audition to record 'live' from the source... and then 'clean' the resulting wave form. You can also connect an old fashioned record player the same way (although you need to run it through an amplifier first). Oh yeah... and for Video editing ... get hold of Adobe Premiere - I'm just beginning to find out how good it is... |

Exact Audio Copy - to copy audio CDs as .wav files to PC FlacFrontend - to encode wav to FLAC SmartRipper - to rip DVDs (for example to rip the audio off a DVD) I think SmartRipper is hard to get now because ripping is considered illegal. DVD Shrink - if your DVD is too big to fit on a 4,7 GB disc. You can also use it to copy a faulty DVD to Hard Drive and rescue it in some cases. DVD2Avi - if you want to work on video, for example run filters or cut away edges etc VirtualDub Mod - to work on the avi Ulead Media Studio - to capture video and edit DVD TMPEG DVD author - to author DVD, create menus and bookmarks. If you have audio tapes, I would very strongly advise you to lend them to someone with experience in audio mastering or at least get help. I have heard the same tape mastered by two different people and there was such an incredible difference. If you want, I send you an email and recommend someone. Here's a tip for recording to computer from your sound card input: Right-click on your volume icon and select "Open Volume Control" link From the advanced volume control that comes up, go to options and select properties link Select "Recording" on the properties window link This will give you the advanced recording volume controls. This is where everyone makes the mistake of looking at these as if "all the way down" means silent. It does not! All the way down on these sliders means ORIGINAL level. Turning them up ANY amplifies the volume. So this is where it's crucial to get the volume just right without disorting. Start all the way down and increase only if necessary, and baby steps.. for line in (which is what you want) a tiny adjustment can make the level much different. link |

All the best, and good luck!thanks for any HELP,think i have it now :-recorded from cassette to pc using abode audition 1.5 (wav) then using flacfront end encoded and now have flac files,but they are smaller than the wav files is that correct:- it's in 2 parts(each side of c9o cassette) part 1:-type:wave sound bit rate:1411 kbps size:420 mb after using flacfrontend type:flac file size 174 mb part 2:-type:wave sound bit rate:1411 kbps size:429 mb after using flacfrontend type:flac file size:190 mb please tell me this is now correct taken me ages of trial and error,that's the way i learn |

See you're still saving quite a bit of file size, but flac retains all of the quality of the original wav :) Also, I don't know if it's been pointed out to you before, but flac files will play in Winamp as easy as mp3s. So it's a great way to personally store audio files too, not only for sharing. You can also burn them to CD without having to change anything (with Nero anyway) so it's a great format to save some space but keep the best possible quality :) |

That sounds just about right to me. maybe someone can help spliting the files into individual tracks. I know there are some free software tools to do this, but I'm totaly ignorant on how to do it. |

I just want to add a very useful tip i got when i started with editing files: If you have Nero, just use the function there to split the tracks. You also avoid clicks between tracks using Nero. |
