I really don't like rap, 'cause it's not even music. I let others do as they like, but I REALLY dislike like rap or country (anything else is fine). But yes! '80's rap was freakin' amazing. One of my friends had a dance for her b-day with rap music (alot of dough went into it I'm sure, but it doesn't really matter because she is REALLY nice) and invited the entire grade. The music was mediocre at best (they played some alternative) but it was HARD to dance to. Rap should, like, be banned from my house or something... |

Rap made its way to the general public around the time the last innovative bits of it died. So basically what we've got now is a kind of 'worst-of' revival in its most commercial form. Hey, you can't spell crap without rap! |

It depends what kind of rap. I really like Eminem for example. He always has strong lyrics. |

AspiringPhilosophe 01.10.2006 11:18 |
Yeah, rap "music" sucks. It's getting to the point where I can't even listen to my favorite radio station anymore because it's playing so much of it. Most of the lyrics are full of hate and violence and degradation, glorification of "bling", and the music they use in the background is all from good, decent songs that came out in the 70's. There are some exceptions, but they are very few and very far between. |

I personally am not a fan of rap either, but there are some lyrics that contains a positive messages, like "I Can" by Nas. The lyrics to the song has a positive message, telling you to remain positive about your future (although it contains drug content) and if you work hard, then you'll know where your dream might take you. So anyway, not all rap lyrics have violence in them. However, the only songs with rap that I like are: "Lady Marmalade" by Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil' Kim, Mya, and Missy Elliot and "Waterfalls" by TLC. That's it! |

Lady Marmalade has a good melody, but I agree with you, CMU History Girl, that the lyrics are disgusting. There is more to life than sleeping around. And, I have never heard the Nas song, so I can't say anything about it's drug refrences. All I know is that I don't aspire to be like the women who sang 'Lady Marmalade' and I DEFINITLEY want to keep away from drugs. I haven't heard those songs in ages, anyway, and I doubt I'll hear them again for a while. I see your point, though. |

I have heard a rapper named Immortal Technique who is rather intelligent, witty, and humorous. Of course, like all things rap, it's musically impertinent, but it's entertaining, at least. One of his works is a tirade criticizing vegetarianism. It's seriously one of the funniest things I've ever heard. Edit: link |

A lot of you dont like it cause you just dont UNDERSTAND IT and CANT RELATE TO IT, and thats the truth, and THATS OKAY, cause you dont HAVE to like it. ( A lot of people I know cant relate to Rock music, its just not 'their thing') For example I loooooooove Queen, and my brothers listen to mostly rap, and they think Queen is gay, but I dont care, thats not gonna kill my love for them :) I liked rap back in the 80-90's before Pac and Biggie died...now, it is honestly just a bunch of crap, and some rappers dont even rap they just yell (ex: Lil John...lol)...but a lot of the rappers who ARE GOOD, and actually have something to say, GET NO RADIO PLAY! So, you guys dont get to hear the rappers that are good. Rap groups that I liked and heard growing up: NWA, Public Enemey, RUN DMC, The Roots, Dilated Peoples, Slum Village, The Fugees, Arrested Development, Black Sheep, Salt N' Pepper (they didnt write their own raps for a long time) A tribe called Quest, De La Soul, A Tribe called Quest, Erik B and Rakim, Bone Thugs n Harmony, etc, I even liked Outkast back in the day, and still do like them :) I know many of you guys dont believe this, but rapping does take A LOT of talent...I've been to battles before, kinda like the movie 8 mile...and let me tell you, it takes A LOT of talent, cause a lot of the rappers who battle,(sometimes they write the lyrics before hand, but a lot of them dont) they just think of the lyrics off of their HEAD!!!! I write poetry, but I DO NOT rap...lol |

Music is an art, it is about expressing yourself in lyrics. I mean some could be alright if the words were actually clever, even though I probably would still not really care for it, but at least I could respect it. They need to write more meaningful lyrics instead of all that crap about "doin' hoes" and shit like that. Its just garbage and its corrupting youth. I see it everyday. Theres a kid in my class who tried to feel up a nun. Nothing is sacred anymore, nothing. |

There's a difference between R&B and Rap. There is no artistic merit in Rap music. Some would say it's poetry, but I think it's horse poo. R&B has artistic merit. There are various singers and songwriters and musicians that know there stuff. But like most music of today it's mostly crap, it's never going to compare with the 60's and 70's. Pharrell, like him or not, is a trained musician and a good producer. |
Mr.Jingles 03.10.2006 12:10 |
Contemporary R&B sucks. Now you can't hear an R&B song without having a rapper featured on the fuckin' song. If you want to listen some really good R&B pick some stuff by Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and other classic Motown artists. For a more modern version of R&B try Sade or Simply Red. |
