I've just picked up John Mayer's new album 'Continuum' after seeing him on Conan the last couple of nights, and I have to say, I'm quite impressed. I've never really cared much for him either way (though I HATED 'Your Body Is A Wonderland'), but this album is REALLY good. It's very soulful, and I like that. It's quite refreshing to hear something this good these days!
So, does anyone else have it? If so, what do you think?
John Mayer seems more mature on this one. His first albums were nothing but a bunch of whiny pussy rock that only seems to appeal to sexually frustrated women.
Dan is more than right on disliking 'Your Body Is A Wonderland'. Possibly one of the worst songs ever.
I'm still not too fond of his music, but hey... much better than that Justin Timberlake crap.

How true! ANYTHING is better than Justin Timberlake (even John Mayer's old stuff)!
John Mayer is a brilliant guitarist. Too bad he has the wrong audience. The majority of his audience is horny girls who think he's hot, and they wouldn't care less about his musicianship. I've seen a DVD of his, and I really enjoyed it. Don't judge him by the hit singles. Those are just the marketable songs.
GH, I agree with you all the way. Based on the strength of 'Continuum', I picked up his other albums and was again impressed. It's quite a breath of fresh air (how cliché). I'll be sure to look out for any future releases. His playing reminds me a lot of Eric Clapton. Am I alone?
I saw John Mayer play live on the Crossroads Guitar Festival on the telly. Although the song he did (City Love according to the tracklisting) was whiney middle of the road stuff, the first thing he played (must have been a warm up) had some amazing guitar in it, I was quite impressed!

Not at all. But I'd say he's closer to Hendrix than Clapton.
Sorry, but 'No Such Thing' and 'Your Body Is A Wonderland' are so bad that they can nearly fall on the Michael Bolton category of awfully painful to listen cheesy ballads.
There's this John Mayer Trio album I ran into some time back. I had very early dismissed John Mayer as trash a long time ago, pretty much the first time I heard "Your Body is a Wonderland."
However, I kept hearing repeatedly, "John Mayer is a very good guitarist," from a motley arrangement of sources - even old guard classic rock people. I even heard it from my guitar instructor who I have always respected very much. So once I heard it from him, it simply baffled me what the hell was going on.
One day, I decided to check out this John Mayer Trio, after hearing a bit on TV (it having sounded like actual rock music intrigued me even further). So I pirated the CD, and went on a-listening.
Well, he's not the best, but the music I heard is EXTREMELY refreshing when considering his former music and pop music altogether. Apparently I'm late for a meeting now, I just got a call. So I'll leave it at that.
Edit: As far as comparisons go, I would relate this live album most to SRV, particularly the vocals.
