You might want to try reading his bio on wikipedia - link - and see just how passionate a conservationist and animal enthusiast was. He wasn't only a crazy Aussie who ran around screaming "Crikey!" and "I'll stick me finger up her bum!" to get ratings; he actually gave a shit. I was always indifferent about him and his show, but just the fact that he cared about all animals means a lot to me, and he certainly didn't deserve what he got. |

Lester Burnham wrote: Apparently, you didn't read the part about his death where he wasn't "fucking with wild animals" - he was merely going for a swim and the stingray felt threatened and attacked. No, he was pulling his usual stunt of coming up behind an animal and straddling it - a stingray's spine points backwards, and it's almost impossible to get jabbed with it, especially in the chest, unless you're too damn close, and trying to hump it. Dude was the second guy in Aussie history to get killed this way - that takes determination! |

"according to his friend and colleague, John Stainton, he swam too close to one of the animals. "He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat the Croc One" From the wikipedia page you quoted earlier, Lester ;) |
Lester Burnham 06.09.2006 13:58 |
Yeah, but it's all about context - he wasn't searching for stingrays and was in fact filming some random ocean shots for a documentary. The stingray was hidden or partially obscured and then reacted when he felt boxed in by the cameraman and Irwin. |
kagezan1313 06.09.2006 14:09 |
Show me where it says that... |
Janet 06.09.2006 14:15 |
John Stainton said it in a television interview on CNN. |
Lester Burnham 06.09.2006 14:20 |
"But weather had prevented the crew from doing work for that program, Stainton said, so Irwin decided to do some softer features for a new children's TV show he was doing with his daughter, Bindi. Wildlife documentary maker Ben Cropp, citing a colleague who saw footage of the attack, told Time.com that Irwin had accidentally boxed the stingray in. "It stopped and twisted and threw up its tail with the spike, and it caught him in the chest," said Cropp. "It's a defensive thing. It's like being stabbed with a dirty dagger." (Read the TIME.com obituary.external link)" (from link ) |

He was swimming alongside it, didn't notice that his cameraman had swung around in front, and created a box-in. Regardless of his feelings towards animal conservation - he clearly didn't like animals on a face-to-face basis. He abused them and made them feel threatened for a living. It's a wonder he lasted as long as he did. Ok, I have never been angry from reading something here, but seriously for those who say shit like that know absolutely nothing about what he did and his passion for animal conservation and some certain people should really be ashamed of themselves! Talking crap about Steve when he died on Monday!? It makes me wonder if some of you have any compassion what so ever... He deserves way more respect than some of you are willing to give him. Treating animals like shit? Do you have any idea how much (of his own may i add) money he spent putting into buying land for animal habitat conservation?! Most of the money that he earned through australia zoo and his docos he put right back into everything that he was fighting for. Get your facts straight when you say he treated animals like shit because if it wasnt for Steve we would probably have half the numbers in Australian wild life we have now. PS. I am really sorry I had to do this... |

The people saying that he got what he deserved.... None of you would even think of doing the wonderful things in your life that Steve did, because you are a pussy! A wimp! He didn't do these things because he was an idiot, he did these explorations to provide education on these animals! Before you start talking about someone who lives their life to bring joy and who educates so many, then dies doing just that, think about if you would ever come close to making the impact that this person has made on the world. RIP Steve, after while crockerdile. |

I am really sorry I had to do this...Regardless of his World View, I'm talking on an animal to animal basis here... he annoyed the shit out of them, got in their personal space, and showed very little thought for what the ANIMAL thought about all the running around, getting grabbed - all in front of big arse camera crews. This is, in my view, plainly disrespectful to an animal that can't actually say (in our language, anyway) "Hey I don't appreciate this, please leave me alone". Animals, by and large, don't know when we're stuffing around. I'd put money on the majority of the animals he played with actually being quite uncomfortable - threatened, even, by the antics he got up to. Sometimes in front of CROWDS too... this is not cool. I'm sure his money was very useful to animal welfare, and I'm sure his zoo is the finest such place for animals to live in. I really applaud that. But the guy knew jack about animals if he thought it was ok to behave like an utter galah around them. I don't know what part of the country you are from (if indeed, this country) but they tell you very early on *not to stuff around with animals that can kill you*. He was a bonehead - THAT IS WHY PEOPLE LIKED HIM. Cheap entertainment. He was not a champion of anything but reckless behaviour; it made for good fun viewing, but really... I think it shows a great disrespect to one Mr. Butler, saying that Steve Irwin was our foremost mind on animals. He was just a big kid having a bit of fun. People are all-too-right that his death is tragic, early, and meaningless. He was only 44. Fucking tragic; he won't get to see his kids grow up and do all the things he should be there to see. But I'm sick of this stupid attitude that he's some kind of genius of the animal kingdom. He was just an entertainer. Pure and simple. |

The guy has done more good in his life than your entire family ever will. Just keep that in mind. Understood? What you say might be verifiable for a dozen other families you might know, but not mine. I can't speak for myself; I'm occasionally selfish and mediocre when the mood takes me, but my family is above your worthless reproach. Really. My sister saved a baby on the train once, when *no other fucker on the train* even batted an eyelid. You haven't a damn clue of the quality of the people you're pissing on - whereas with Steve Irwin, we're assured that what we saw on camera was 'the real Steve' - so if anything, we're in prime position to say what we think of him. I had no idea that you knew Steve Irwin personally (well you sound like it anyway) but I stand by what I said. His gift to the animal kingdom was not the dullard personality we all saw on television. It was his extremely beneficial zoo, and monetary contributions. It is absolutely none of my business if, between LAN parties and anime screenings, you choose to get annoyed at random people on the internet. Your prerogative. However, go and pick on someone who's just making fun of Steve Irwin because he can. I don't judge him 'just for his work on Animal Planet', and I'm not an ignorant cunt. You have me mistaken for someone else, but I forgive you. |
thomasquinn 32989 07.09.2006 09:43 |
I don't want your forgiveness. Only people whom I can muster some respect for can offer me that. After your remarks, I cannot give you the least bit of respect. Good to hear about your sister; she's plainly a better person than you are. I'm very sorry if I may seem even less nice than usual, blame it on the unrelenting flow of bad news I've had during the last few days. However, I stand by what I said: anyone who has the ignorance and bad taste to tread on the personality of this man who, though a fool on tv, has done more for this planet than all of this worthless mess that goes by the name of QZ put together, does not deserve the (polluted) air they are breathing. |
john bodega 07.09.2006 09:53 |
"I don't want your forgiveness." It's only human to offer it; understood. "Only people whom I can muster some respect for can offer me that." I understand this, but I can't really agree with it. I am, for one, willing to listen to what you think about this guy; you just seem intent on arguing with people. "After your remarks, I cannot give you the least bit of respect." You are - at least, by talking. I truly think you've misunderstood what I'm saying here... I LIKED Steve Irwin, in one sense. In another, I think it was all a lot of bullshit, and some rational criticisms of his behaviour around animals are being ignored because (perhaps rightly so) it's a little too soon after his death. Not my problem. "Good to hear about your sister; she's plainly a better person than you are." SHE IS. Better than me, better than you, better than anyone I've ever met, largely because she's had a *really* fucked up lot of events in her life. But she manages to turn it around. "I'm very sorry if I may seem even less nice than usual, blame it on the unrelenting flow of bad news I've had during the last few days." Ours not to reason why. "However, I stand by what I said: anyone who has the ignorance and bad taste to tread on the personality of this man who, though a fool on tv, has done more for this planet than all of this worthless mess that goes by the name of QZ put together, does not deserve the (polluted) air they are breathing." ARE YOU READING THE SAME THINGS THAT I AM? I acknowledge his worth in certain areas. I merely point out that it does not make him some kind of God-like figure, it doesn't make him perfect, and he was irresponsible and foolish to act like that around animals, especially when it endangered him; and later on, one of his kids. Jesus - of course I liked what I saw! He was a funny guy, entertaining.... but for someone who apparently stands for high values concerning animals, he made a big fuss out of annoying them. Again - it's not my worry that you've got things to sort out at the moment, I'd never dump my problems on anyone here so no one expects the same from you. But you really have the wrong idea here. I'm not the one that posted a curiously inappropriate gif of Steve Irwin swimming away from a stingray. In another thread, when I related a badly timed joke about Sting, I typed 'HAHA' in sarcasm. I am not the foe here. Not that it matters to you, but you have been largely unfair in calling me a cunt and I'm a little annoyed. In your last sentence, you *actually agree* with what I think about Steve Irwin, so if you're still pissy, it's likely about something else. Anyway. |

Hmmm...one not need omnipresent abilities to calculate that one, my dear Brenski.kagezan1313 wrote: He was swimming alongside it, didn't notice that his cameraman had swung around in front, and created a box-in. Any way you cut it, he was within 3 feet of the thing, or the barb wouldn't have nailed him. Familiarity breeds contempt - he simply didn't give the animal the respect and distance it deserved. All arguments about specifics will probably only be settled when the footage is released. !well if that's the case....how can YUO assume that YOU know it all?...ffs - who voted you as God? |

Grow up and show a little respect. You puck off, you pucking bastard puck! Respect - listen. My uncle was with Queensland Parks and Game for 10 years, doing the same dangerous things Steve-O made his circus living out of. Only, the Queensland Parks people actually do it for real animal conservation - no bleachers, so applause, no cameras, no mega-bucks. Just danger, occasional lost limbs and horrible scars, but the knowledge that they're making a difference. My uncle was the first person to breed endangered tree kangaroos in captivity, possibly bringing the species back from the brink of extinction. That matters. I was a fan of Steve's for about 3 shows, until I realized it was all staged, contrived crap - wanna know how to tell? Everything you see is filmed by a cameraman. Steve-o spots a croc in a dark river at night and spontaneously decides to dive into the river - off he goes! Fuck, he's crazy! But wait - the cameraman's already set up underwater with night-vision camera to catch his entry! WTF?? Go back and watch the show now, keeping the cameramen in mind, and you'll see just how scripted and cornball it really was. If you want a class act in the wildlife entertainment department, watch Rob Bredl's show, Killer Instinct - he's a croc expert and a conservationist, but he treats these creatures with the caution they deserve. |

Please guys, it's a tragedy and has hit Australia hard. Not to mention the fact that his kids now have to grow up without a father, and Terri is now widowed. Steve absolutely did not deserve to die. Some of you on here are being very cruel and judgemental. The fact is, Steve cared alot about protecting wildlife. He certainly just do it for money, in fact every cent made from the Zoo went back into it, and he still lived in the little country house that he grew up in, in the small town of Beerwah, which is about 1/2 an hour from were I live. He never wanted to be treated like a celebrity, he just wanted to inform the world of the beauty of animals and the importance of conservation. He was more of an Australian icon than anyone else I can think of. He will be missed. |

Can't at all speak for the others in the thread - but I never once said he deserved what he got, and more than once I acknowledged his death was a tragic one. It's none of my business that people take umbrage with my belief that he wasn't the foremost mind on the animal kingdom that our country has to offer; I honestly think he wasn't. I think he was possibly one of the most helpful personalities in term of animal conservation in that he created awareness of this whole part of the country that most of us don't see. His zoo was pretty top notch.... when I say that I think he didn't show animals much respect, I'm talking about the big-arsed camera crews, the wide eyes and the shouting... Animals don't like that crap anymore than I do. In no way am I casting aspersions on his legacy or whatever. If it's possible, he was one of the greatest benefactors to the Animal Kingdom in general, but on a person-to-animal basis he was more like a serial pest; shoving cameras in animals faces and making a hooah out of things. Bless him though, really - I am sure enough that his enthusiasm will live on in some form in his kids, and that one day they'll be grown adults that he'd be proud of. |
