I picked it up on Friday... Untold Story> very slight difference to 2000 version Making of Untold Story> No comment. A certain part of it is highly inappropriate for an FM tribute release. I am referring to the "farting" bit. I really dont find it amusing here. Promo videos> no remastering, exactly same encoding as 2000 release. Time promo starts with drop-outs etc... (if Radio GaGa could be remastered from the original film for GVH2, why not Time ?) Last interview. 7 minutes long - I am not convinced it is unedited, in the middle it stops and restarts. Although this one alone makes the DVD worth to buy! Subtitle errors.. ie Mack is called Mick etc... Mack/David Richards/Mike Moran interviews. Long and boring. No other FM interviews. Still misses the 3rd version of Barcelona and Great Pretender from German TV (maybe legal problems here...) |
KevoM 04.09.2006 05:05 |
Dare I ask are teh promos in the correct aspeat ratio of 4:3 or has David Richards done another '16:9 butchering'? |

I am serious. You will all see it when you get a copy. 4:3 ratio all promos, same as in 2000. |

The video collection DVD that's in the Solo Collection only had PCM audio, this one also has DTS5.1. Will pay a closer look tonight, I just bought the 2CD set and the DVD. |

The 2000 version has Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0. PCM would be nice actually.. uncompressed audio :) I'm looking forward to the new DTS mixes. I've been told that they didn't just use the 2000 versions of 5.1, but actually remixed them again. Hopefully The Untold Story will be anamorphic 16:9 this time. It's letterboxed to begin with... Looks like I'll have my copy in about a week. Amazon doesn't ship early on pre-orders like most retailers do, the bastards ;) |

Is the book out today too? I've been in a couple of shops & they only have the CD & DVD. |
Wilki Amieva 04.09.2006 08:22 |
Lover Of Life... The film has now several audio options: DTS 5.1, PCM stereo with narration, PCM stereo without narration (which I found very clever) and commentary. ...Singer Of Songs As a matter of fact, they DID use the 2000 mixes, just remastered - with the obvious exception of the 1993 video of Living On My Own (not included in the 2000 release) which was 'upmixed' (using ProTools 'unwrap' function - I guess). Anyway, to have all videos in PCM stereo and DTS 5.1 is actually very nice. I also liked The Three Producers, albeit I reckon it gets a little reiterative. That does not bother me, quite the opposite - after all, I AM a QUEENadict. |

Thanks Mikahl. Trust me to look for something that isn't even out yet !! Some websites had the release date as today, some as Wednesday 6th & some as next week.... Oh well, another weeks wait won't hurt I guess. |
Deacon Fan 04.09.2006 11:15 |
Hehe, well I have to wait an extra week for the DVD AND the book, each. And not to keep picking on you Wilki, but if The Untold Story has 5.1 of any kind, it's new too. The original is only 2.0 DD :) And judging by the clips at the site, the narrator himself is new too. |

From which year is the 'last interview' video ? |
Jjeroen 04.09.2006 16:51 |
Pim Derks wrote: From which year is the 'last interview' video ?It's the 'juke-box' interview, recorded round the release of Great Pretender and the recording of Barcelona album. So... calling it Freddie's last recorded interview certainly is a bit dubious. ...btw, I had a quick listen before the weekend, and indeed it seems like the DTS sound on the video's indeed is slightly different to the 5.1 sound on the 2000 release. Haven't compared them enough to be certain. It could well sound 'different' because of the DTS-format. |

1987. No other info known, as usual... this is of course the last known recorded studio TV interview, not general interview. David Wigg 87 audio interviews / Q Magazine from Dec 1988 / and Mike Read radio interview (1989) all took place later. The TV interview at the Royal Opera House is also there with Caballe. So that leaves us with the conclusion> the interview is the "last studio interview with Rudi and Freddie". |
Wilki Amieva 04.09.2006 17:56 |
Again: It's the same mix, but it was kind of remastered. Also, the DTS offers better quality. |

My book shipped from Amazon UK on Tuesday unexpectedly, so maybe it's out Wednesday after all. LOL. I'll probably be getting the book and DVD either Monday or Tuesday. Until then I'm just playing the CDs quite a bit (copies of course). BTW, does the UK CD (2 disc version) have a slipcase? Just curious because this Japanese version does. It also has a nice obi and includes a lyric sheet :) |

Hehe. I remember when we used to share it here. It was like someone would put a link like link and then this one guy would say "no, no, I want a transcript!". LOL, like anyone has the time to do that ;) PS- don't download that or anything. I was just sharing a memory. |

That's not last video interview of course - last one was shared on QZ many-many times. But in the end - DVD is good. Maybe something wrong with me, but it's good release. |

Mkls 08.09.2006 06:43 |
Serry: why it is not the last video interview? can you tell us something i havent discovered yet... This is a re-release. Apart from the 7 min LAST video interview with Rudi (which in itself worth the dvd) there is nothing new or interesting on it. Untold Story was released in 2000, the promos were re-released in 2000. Considering there is roughly 6-10 hours of Freddie interview footage at DoRo archive, also who knows how many hours of "making of" videos (time-born to love you-pretender-barcelona - these are the ones i have seen outtakes so far, i assume all promos shot in the 1980s have all the outtakes in the archive) etc etc etc... A 2nd DVD with 2+ hours of additional stuff from the above, that would make a nice release for us. This one is old boring stuff. Typical... Why is that impossible? 75 minutes of outtakes, another 75 of best of interviews 1977-1987 .... yeah i wake up... |
Jjeroen 08.09.2006 07:03 |
I understood there would be about 2 seconds of additional footage in the Untold Story? :) Well, to be honest... I haven't watched the original more then once and have not had a look at the new version. (I did not feel like crying last week ;-) IS there a difference and can anybody tell me where? :-) |
Serry... 08.09.2006 07:21 |
Because last video interview is from 1988, Freddie gave interview on the party launched due to "Barcelona" release. I see DoRo's point what they calls as last interview (i.e. especially given into the camera though he said "Hi, my name is Kim Basinger!" much later than TGP was filmed, so again technically last "interview" is from November 1990), but anyway... Yes, this is a re-release (jeroen, after watching that new version just one time I think I can say that there are some additions, though I can be wrong... Need to compare timing), but one thing that people misses is that this is release for everyone (i.e. 'commercial' release). Not for collectors. I'd like to see "alternate UEFA" version of 'Barcelona' video on DVD too, I'd like to see making of Born To Love You video, but how about non-collectors or non-die hard fans? (in other words - how many people here really need in single version of Roger's "Happiness"? I'm afraid less than 1%). Good commercial release. IMHO. EDIT: Seems like "new" version is longer... on 30 secs :) But it has subtitles and it's really very important thing for guys like me! |
Deacon Fan 08.09.2006 09:56 |
Boy I'll be glad when mine arrives so I can see for myself. No offense, but you guys suck at giving details. Regional coding, PAL or not, anamorphic or not, DTS, PCM, different narrator or not, alternate audio tracks or not, making-of or not, interview, dual-layer or not. Length, differences in main feature, differences in rom area, menu & screen caps. All will be revealed when I get mine Monday or Tuesday. *sigh* |

Don't worry, "farting moment" has nothing to do with Queen. It's about Rudi Dolezal. |

NTSC or PAL - it depends on what you bought. The european PAL version has subtitles in many languages, while the Latin America/Brazil NTSC version has subtitles in English and Portuguese only, but, again, no Spanish :-(. Not anamorphic transfer, as far as I could tell. link for content and artwork. |

Disc One - The Untold Story - Dual layer, 7.68gb - No more ROM section Run time: 1 hour, 52 mins, 3 secs. (original-1:51:38) 4:3 full frame but mostly letterboxed, region-free, PAL - New Live Aid intro, new opening credits, lots of new stuff throughout, too much to mention. - Can't point to anything specific missing but there must be some because with all the new stuff, the run time isn't much longer. - 4 Audio tracks: stereo with NEW narration (PCM) stereo without narration (Dolby Digital 2.0, 448k) 5.1 DTS directors commentary (Dolby Digital 2.0, 192k) -7 subtitle tracks (for some reason repeated 2 more times for a total of 21) - The Making Of : 17:58, Dolby Digital 2.0 192k Menu caps: link ---------------- Disc Two - The Solo Videos Dual layer, 5.79gb Video interviews with the directors are gone. Video quality is shit. They've done this re-grading stuff like with GVH. Coloured video fuzz throughout. ROM section (photo exhibit) from the original Untold Story disc seems the same here. Main videos: 37:55 (DTS, PCM and directors commentary) (subtitles available for directors commentary only) "In My Defence" is NOT the 2000 re-edit. This version has no voiceovers. I assume it's the 1992 version. The audio seems to be the 1992 remix as well, not the Dave Clark remix from 2000. I've compared the extracted channels of 'Barcelona' and 'The Great Pretender' and found the channels to be identical except for the 2000 Dolby Digital versions being louder. I think it's probably safe to assume the DTS mixes are indeed the same as the 2000 versions, except for 'In My Defence' of course since it's a totally different version of the song. Bonus Videos - 15:33 (DTS & PCM) (no subtitles) A View Forever - 11:56 (PCM) (subtitles available) A really sweet interview with the lady who created the Freddie statue, which truly shows her passion behind the project. And then footage from the dedication ceremony with Freddie's parents, Montserrat and Brian among others. This is a very nice feature. The Three Producers - 35:07 (PCM) (subtitles available) Others may find this stuff boring, but I really enjoyed hearing these guys talk about their work with Freddie. Considering all of the unofficial Queen related documentary crap out there these days, 35 minutes with people who genuinely knew the man is priceless to me. Includes brand new interviews as well as older clips, including some bits which were never included in previous documentaries. Great feature. The Last Interview - 6:57 (PCM) (subtitles available) The jukebox interview with Freddie from 1987. A great little interview though I can imagine Freddie must have hated this one. The lighting is horrible and Freddie looks really chubby. LOL. I could go on. Nice to have this in complete form. ... to be continued |
