Well as we know when Queen released I Want To Break Free video and it was bannd in America is that video still bannd to this day? |
7 seas of Rhye 24.08.2006 14:04 |
I didn't even know it was banned here! Why was it banned? |
Bohemian MAY-niac/Deaconite 24.08.2006 14:11 |
Because everyone thought it was very dodgy having four men dressed in drag and that it would be a bad influence on the children. Body Language was banned too, because it was too risque. I don't know if the videos are still banned or not. I'm very annoyed by the fact that MTV banned these two videos in America, but yet today they can show music videos that have references to sex, drugs, and violence. Now tell me, does this make sense? |
Serry... 24.08.2006 14:18 |
Body Language was banned by BBC too |
Deacon Fan 24.08.2006 14:23 |
Never was. |
Serry... 24.08.2006 14:36 |
Original not censored version was. I don't know for how long though. |

It's riduculous that they banned the IWTBF video in America. They're muisc videos nowadays are basically short porn films. |

_Bijou_ 24.08.2006 15:24 |
And the IWTBF video is men dressed as women not like the sluts you get in videos now, purposely being suggestive. |
PieterMC 24.08.2006 15:27 |
Yes its still banned. Infact it resulted in all Queen videos being banned. |
its_a_hard_life 26994 24.08.2006 15:45 |
It's not banned on VH1, I usually see it there. =) |
Poo, again 24.08.2006 15:46 |
Check out today's hip hop videos. THEY should too be banned if IWtBF was found inappropriate. |

PieterMC 24.08.2006 16:19 |
If VH-1 are showing it then they are in pretty deep trouble with the FTC. |
Penetration_Guru 24.08.2006 16:22 |
Maybe they haven't heard. As long as noone splits, we should be ok. |

Break Free was never actually banned in America. I saw it on MTV at least twice during its chart run so there were most likely plenty of airings. Perhaps a few religious idiots protested it for whatever insecure reasons of their own and this has translated through history as it being banned somewhere.. yeah, maybe in one city or something. These legendary Queen tales just grow and grow..... I just hate being generalized like that.. as if our entire country banned it, and "didn't get the joke". I live in fucking Kansas so trust me, I know when something is banned. "NYPD Blue" was banned in my city when it first started and in many other cities. Discuss that. LOL |
DreaminQueen 24.08.2006 17:20 |
I believe the ban on this video was lifted in '91 on IWTBF after Freddies death. Not quite sure on the reason why they all of a sudden found it okay again. Yes times are a-changing, but still, they simply didnt get the humor of it all. *sigh* So take away my Queen and leave me with crap... THANKS FOR THE ALTERNATIVES BUDDY! |

There was a rather large uproar when there was (i forgot whos it was) naked bums on the telly! haha Now if you wanna discuss a controversial video. Madonna's LIKE A PRAYER. |
Joeker 24.08.2006 17:55 |
yeah so the MTV show "NEXT" is allowed to show 5 guys kissing at once but not allowed to show I want to break free?? cmon |
Deacon Fan 24.08.2006 18:37 |
Ahh yes I stand corrected. The ban WAS lifted in 1991. It was a glorious ceremony hosted by Downtown Julie Brown and carried not only on MTV, but CNN as well. Hehe, funny how I'd forgotten. But when they lifted that ban up and placed it in the bankeeper box, the tape underneath was in pretty bad shape and one of MTV's engineers was interviewed and stated they may not be able to have the glorious world-re-premiere of the ban-less video. Thankfully at the last minute a Japanese laserdisc of "Greatest Flix II" was found under some blond dude's desk at VH1 and they got it queued in time. Whew! Yeah those were the days. What a memory. And thank god they lifted that ban! |
its_a_hard_life 26994 24.08.2006 18:52 |
All I know is that I've seen it on many other music channels except... yes, MTV.. What's their problem? That was done 22 years ago, todays music videos are soft Porn and they are still airing that. What's wrong with putting IWTBF back on? |

I've seen it on VH1 Classic all the time. But I live in the UK. We don't have silly bans because we can't handle seeing men in drag. |

But you always have to remember that this was in 1986 and MTV and other music networks in the U.S were far more strict then they are now. I love the IWTBF video, it's absolutely hilarious. |

the reason we are able to see "short porn films" as videos today, it´s because they banned the kind of "I want to breal free" videos in the 80´s...all their fault! |
Bambi 24.08.2006 23:42 |
no they play it on vh1 classics all the time. the only video i remember being banned is Body language, and that was stupid because it had nothing in it to ban it for. |
wembley86 24.08.2006 23:48 |
that wonderful video was before its time cus in the 90's who was shacking there ass. let me see it was rue paul. singing you better work it!supermodel. how the times have changed. i think our country for those who live in the states. mtv couldnt distingish a good video these day if they had it coming out of there ass. they only play to teenie boppers and young guys that cant rent college girls gone wild who jerk off to the shit that is one there. i mean really they have banned serval videos in the past like madonna's and the end of the black and white video for micheal jackson. i like vh1 classic but they dont play enough queen video's on the vh1 classic of america. but i must say they are better than mtv. |

I remember the first time I saw the IWTBF video. I was lying underneath our coffee table looking up Rogers skirt! I know, I admit I was being naughty. My mom walked in and asked if I saw anything I liked! I raised up really fast and split my head open!! It was worth it and I'd do it all over again!!! |
AspiringPhilosophe 25.08.2006 06:40 |
That video was banned? Oh great.....I swear that the powers that be that run my country are the biggest bunch of idiots to ever walk the face of this planet. Obviously they've not seen the recent hip-hop "music" videos (I refuse to classify that and rap as music...). Wouldn't surprise me if they brought it back after Freddie's death....because suddenly it was ok when one of the people in it was dead. Then again, after the whole "wardrobe malfunction" uproar at the Superbowl a couple of years ago, the FCC is getting even more conservative (as long as it's not a show they'll watch, like Law and Order or NYPD Blue or something). As Eric Idle says in a song I heard over the internet.... F*ck you very much, the FCC... |
Legy 25.08.2006 10:31 |
It never was. I saw the video as a kid on MTV, several times. Body Language was banned, it no longer is. I saw it on VH1 classics this past week. |

I don't know if BR was banned, that was before the MTV days, I know the cover was banned. Something to do with boobies and booties |
Deacon Fan 25.08.2006 15:13 |
Yeah the original Bicycle Race video was removed from "Greatest Flix" in the U.S.. Hollywood Records restored it to their "Greatest Hits" video in 1992 though. (which also contained Body Language btw) |
SilverShoes 25.08.2006 20:48 |
I wasn't aware that it was actually officially banned. I distinctly remember seeing it on MTV back when it was first released. They showed it several times, and I even remember one of the VJ's pointing out that the band members were dressed as characters from "their favorite soap opera" (which I would learn years later was, of course, Coronation Street). So if it was banned, they must have shown it at least a few times first. And no, this wasn't VH-1. I'm not even sure VH-1 even existed in 84. And if it did, we definitely didn't have it on our cable system. I don't think we got VH-1 until 86. And this did NOT lead to all Queen videos being banned either. I distinctly remember seeing Princes Of The Universe, A Kind Of Magic, I Want It All, and Innuendo, when each of those came out. I think the real issue is that back then, a lot of people in the US just didn't "get" drag humor. And as Brian points out on the DVD audio commentary, nobody outside of the UK would have known they were dressed as characters from Coronation Street, so the joke just totally went over everyone's heads. And about the Bicycle Race video, it most definitely was on the American version of Greatest Flix. I distinctly remember renting it in the mid 80's, and seeeing the bit in the middle (during the bit with the bells and during the guitar solo) where they show the footage from the bicycle race but they added all these electronic video effects so you couldn't tell the women were naked. Whether that was done by whichever compnay released the video here in the US, or if that was always a part of the video, I dunno. But it was definitely on the American version of Greatest Flix. |
