I'm interested in planning to do something for this anniversary in the US. Has anyone arranged anything? I realize it's the day after Thanksgiving this year so it might be harder to get people to commit to doing something, but I'd be willing to travel where ever to do an unoffical gathering. If there's something already being planned, can you point me in that direction?
Thanks!

I am having a cake on his would-have-been 60th birthday.
My mom says I can make a wish on it.

I think it would be a better idea to have a party on Freddie's birthday anniversary...just my opinion, though.
It's an idea, but do what? When would his birthday have been, anyway? (gonna run upstairs and check my tour programs). Short of playing lots of Queen all day long, I can't think of much to do, unless Almost Queen just happens to be in town that day.
Beyond that, I can't think of much else to do. Is there someplace where there's like a statue or something of Freddie? Maybe if it falls on a weekend, I can fly out and pay my respects.
Not his bday (9/5) but his death anniversary (11/24) since it has been 15 years. It's too late to organize anything for his bday. I don't mean having a celebration on 11/24, that's fairly morbid, but I mean just getting a casual group together somewhere to reminisce and hang out, maybe raise money for Mercury Phoenix trust to send to them?
It's just an idea that popped into my head just now.
I've been trying for months to get an AIDS/CANCER/ALS mini local concert event going. But i cant seem to find anyone thats willing to hear a 16 year old with ideas of such granduer.
I told the head of my local National Honor Society about it as a new member. And she loved it, (she was also my AP US History teacher) and she went to the principal with me and we discussed something (but do to legal entanglements the size thing i wanted to do was to large, but we could do somethign on a smaller scale)And i've even written the mayor of my city, and he gave me "Support" and phone numbers. Its amounted to nothing but phone calls of people who dont want to be bothered with something i've spent months planning on paper...
So perhaps i can get something together on the smaller scale at my school and strip it down to just the AIDS Mercury Phoenix Trust...
But being Thanksgiving Holiday, i dont know how that will work, maybe before hand.
Otherwise, ill probably listen to QUEEN records and THE GREAT PRETENDER and think of Freddie all day...
I'll have my own mini party on his Bday though!
Dreamin Queen, maybe you can get people to donate canned goods as a food drive or something and donate to a local shelter in Freddie's name if you can't raise cash toward Mercury Phoenix trust. Either way, good for you for being so active! :)

There's a statue of him in Montreux, Switzerland...that'd be quite a trip from Ohio though.

Well, I AM planning on being in Europe in November, but it's the second week I'm going to be there, so it's unlikely I pay my respects on THE day...hmmm, I wonder how far Montreux is from Paris or Amsterdam (the other two cities I'm definitely going to be visiting).
I think it would be a good idea to call local radio stations on that day to request Queen songs. You could send an email a couple days before to the radio station.
It's always a good idea to send a donation to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, even if its $5.
No one mentioned celebrating, goodco.... From the start I titled this commemorating just to be clear. It's a sad, sad day.
I will definitely call radio stations and request Queen, good idea, Lisser!

AH but it's the age old mixup! Our first instinct is the mourn the dead; a selfish instinct no less, we mourn because we can't see them anymore. When in fact, the dead get the good end of the deal - there is no more suffering for them. In truth, one ought to rejoice a little when remembering their dead friends because it's what they'd want if they were here.
Furthermore; why do we pay so much tribute to people when they're dead? Wouldn't it make more sense if, every now and then, we let those around us know that we appreciate them? Heck, I make it a mission of mine to celebrate those around me *while they are still here*, because I'll be damned if I wait till their funeral to do it! Why, that'd be like opening the barn door before I've bought the horse.

Well....if you are a good daughter like I am (or a good son), you tell your parents how much you love them and appreciate them every time you talk to them. If I call them to ask them a simple question, I always tell them I love them and I always tell them thank you even if they haven't done anything for me at that specific point in time. I want to them to know how much
I love them and appreciate them so I tell them just about every time I talk to them, which is a lot!! I figure they should never get tired of hearing it. I love when my kids tell me they love me. I love it when they show it also.
:)

GOOD IDEA!!! Here in Cleveland, on WNCX (the local classic rock station) they do four songs in a row every weekday at 2:00 pm. Maybe on both Freddie's birthday AND the day he died, we can all e-mail the station adn ask them to play some Queen for the four play thingy.
And maybe this happens in other cities too, the four play thing, so people in those cities should e-mail the stations and ask them to do the same.
