What's going on with this... I know what you're thining but let me explain. I just want to know if collectors and maybe people who arent collectors but knew the band members and may have audio gems are being contacted and asked to contribute what they have to make it as complete as possible. It's almost 2007, I mean that 2009 date which sounded so long away is rapidly approaching and if they're not getting contacted by now either the date will be pushed back again or the boxset won't be as complete as it could be.. I'm getting the feeling that there may be bits and pieces that get left that won't ever be released officially. Also I really wont be surprised by anything in the archives. All I have to do is think of Mad the Swine, that was a song left off an album because of disagreement on the drums. A very good song and the band probably went 20 yrs without thinking about it or trying to get it on record, they basically throw it away. So while I may go in to the boxset with low expectations, not expecting that much in terms of completed unheard songs I wont be shocked if some great to very good ones turn up. |

The rumour is that the Boxset will be scrappped in favor of re-releasing Queen's catalogue of albums as small sets of possibly reproduced dts dvds like they have already done with 'A Night At The Opera' and 'The Game'. With these albums an extra cd containing all b-sides, demo recordings, alternate takes and other rare material, will be packaged in, collectively giving us the promised material. At this point, I am starting to question how much stuff there is that hasn't already leaked out into the internet somehow. |
Nathan 02.08.2006 18:34 |
^What? Noooooooo! How much money am I going to have to spend now??! |
MOANZONE TWAT 03.08.2006 01:10 |
We will have to spend a bit of money and for what? Tracks most of already have? More than likely. :( O well that's life. |
Wilki Amieva 03.08.2006 06:11 |
Well, that rumour has been disregarded by QP shortly after it was spread. The box set/s is/are still the main project. |
Deacon Fan 03.08.2006 06:27 |
Heh, yeah they've promised not to do that.. for what it's worth. Besides, it would mean yet another version of ANATO and if that were to happen, I think some fans would resort to riots, physical violence, etc. ;) I wouldn't care if it was mostly stuff I'd already heard on the internet.. still it would be properly presented, better quality in most cases and gathered into one place. Regardless of what's been said though, I'm not taking any promises of a release seriously until something's actually available for pre-order ;) |

Hi this queen boxset that remains a fascinating thread starter of late is gonna take some time to analyse, research and set-up so whilst we're 2and a half years away??? we must be patient , just think of beatles fans and how long they had to wait to get what they wanted. As for unheard stuff i think there's plenty there to keep us entertained be it in the guise of alternate versions outtakes studio chatter etc..... . I think when Greg brooks and whoever else has sifted thru every reel and data of queeniness and obviously any rare material from private collectors that comes their way will it then happen. I personally think 2010/11 we will finally see this happening although i really hope it doesn't take that long. |

Given the fact that Greg Brooks has been our only official source of information concerning the Box Set, we can all safely assume that there is no such thing. Brooks has proven himself to be a pathological liar on this board, and I find it very difficult to believe a single word he says. I wouldn't be surprised if he's been off the job for years, and is writing the drivel he posts on this board from a mental home in a state of complete denial. Don't hold your breath! |

In point of fact - during the Beatles lifetime (1960's - 1970's) no such project would ever have been considered. However, when the Beatles catalogue was digitally remastered for CD - it was then, when returning to the original (fully intact and catalogued master tapes) that the 'Anthology' project was given the green light. In those pre-internet boom days, the Beatles managed to trace, catalogue, and compile both a three double CD set, AND an eight video collection in under THREE years. (The true gestation period between conception and the birth of the project). Another lesser known FACT is that the 1995 'Anthology' releases coincided with the Thirtieth anniversary of the Beatles fifth LP (HELP!) which was originally released in 1965. Therefore, when comparing the 30th anniversary ‘celebrations’ of the Beatles ‘fifth’ against the 30th anniversary of Queen’s ‘fifth’ (A Night At The Opera), it is both inaccurate and unfair to claim that ‘… beatles fans… had to wait to get what they wanted’, as an excuse for Queen Productions lack of movement. (And if only 'A Night At The Opera' recieved a proper 'Anthology-type' anniversary release). Finally, we read of all forms of misdemeanours happening over at the Queen vaults. Lost or stolen tapes, inaccurate or lost catalogues, tapes in poor (or beyond) repair. Yet, the Beatles catalogue has survived largely intact, whilst working for the same parent company. So can someone explain to me why this would be so? |
Lester Burnham 03.08.2006 11:08 |
I read somewhere, John, that the concept was conceived sometime in the early 1970s as "The Long And Winding Road", but I assume that it was constantly put on the backburner for other projects. In 1985, an album called "Sessions" was released but withdrawn just as quickly, and featured tracks that would later surface on the Anthologies. However, you're right that the project was brought back in earnest in the early 1990s, and many of the interviews by Paul seem to be given on a soundstage during his 1993 tour. It was amazing what The Beatles pulled off... now, if only Queen could do it, too. Also, Beatles fans always had easy access to unreleased material, because bootlegs were constantly being released; I'm sure there was very little on the Anthologies that were a huge revelation to Beatles collectors, whereas the Queen archives are very closely guarded, so who knows what treasures lie behind closed doors? |

Good point john what i was saying was just a general remark about how us fans of queen will have to be patient whilst waiting for the anthology not to state a fact of it being so long coming if you get my point. As for the true start date i know that neil aspinall who worked with the beatles was commissioned to put a documentary of the beatles together called "the long and winding road" back in 1971 but it never got off the ground until like you stated the reissues of beatles albums on cd, and the "new" tracks that macca ringo and george harrison then decided to work on then proved a financial vehicle to put these rare and unheard tracks together. |

A few demos or works in progress are perhaps the real lost treasures to be uncovered, and as Queen Productions hold a track record for gross exaggeration, I really do not believe their hype anymore. Once we were told: ‘…every concert recorded by Queen existed as a soundboard recording’. Now we are informed: ‘…this is NOT true, and that few releasable concerts still exist intact’. Likewise, we were once told: ‘…Queen could match the Beatles 9-CD rarities set’, and yet I believe, (partially based on what Greg has played at conventions), this is not the case. Think about it… These discs he plays are meant to be ‘representational’ of the ‘cream’ of unreleased material. (The ‘Unreleased Greatest Hits’ if you like). Now, if those discs represent the best of the unreleased and unavailable material, I do not think that the future of the box-sets bodes well, and that this is the REAL reason for their failure to surface. Like most fans, I too would like to hear some of these unreleased ‘works in progress’. Even karaoke remixes of ‘Killer Queen’ or ‘Love Of My Life’ would still make an exciting addition to any collection, but as for these awaited treasure chests filled with priceless gems being sold in a store near you some time soon – forget it, as I really do not believe they are out there. |
Nathan 03.08.2006 11:44 |
I reckon it'll be an essential release. Think about it: The Beatles have the Anthologies, The Who have Odds & Sods, Led Zeppelin have Coda and Uriah Heep have From The Vaults. Plus Bruce Springsteen has his release too. Releasing rare and unheard tracks rounds off the discography, plus it makes for some very interesting listening. |

Of course, on the other side of the coin, nobody had ever heard the recording except for Greg... so who knows how true it is? But if a song such as that comes from left field (and actually exists), then we don't really know what is behind the locked doors of the archives. I'm not saying that there are complete songs in the vault - maybe there's just a snippet or a demo or whatever - but I believe Roger once said that forty tracks were recorded for The Game, and that thirty were done for The Miracle. Sure, these may not all be finished, but it would be fascinating to hear at least some incomplete ideas. But that's not the point. I do agree that there are probably more demos and works in progress of existing songs than finished, unreleased songs. And I'm not getting my hopes up for the anthologies to wow me in that department; I'll be more than pleased to get whatever comes out, even if it's just alternate and unreleased takes of known songs. |

...Not to mention that the ANTHOLOGY series were originally meant to be purely a video release - the documentaries being mostly compiled by mid 1993. The idea for the audio releases came after they researched the master tapes looking for a rarities-based soundtrack to match the footage and crystallized when Yoko Ono approached the remaining BEATLES with the John demos. Of course, THE BEATLES' archive, unlike QUEEN's, has been very well catalogued from the beginning, being most of their recording sessions documented in high detail. Furthermore, most BEATLES collectors had most of the recordings issued in the ANTHOLOGY series prior to its release. By the way, the most intriguing thing I have found about the ANTHOLOGY series is that some of the early tracks sound better in some bootlegs. |

At convention last year Greg told us that EMI had put a release date of 2009 on the boxset, and that everything had to be delivered to them by then. This year he told us that the reason we get demos of known tracks played at convention is because the "unreleased" tracks he's played at the first few conventions have leaked. Now, what I'd like to know is who leaked them - bearing in mind they're of studio quality, not convention recordings.... Personaly I don't mind if they give up on the idea of one big boxset full of gems and have smaller releases instead. If it means they pull their fingers out and get back to the 5.1 mixes of the albums and add a disc or two of demos with each then I'm a happy little bunny! Infact, I wish they'd 5.1 Freddies solo albums, instead of another bloody greatest hits rip off full of shitty remixes done by people who wouldn't have a clue what Freddie would and would not have liked. |

What???? Pieter - have you REALLY listened to NATO in 5.1? Come on dude, there are instruments there you've never heard before. 5.1 is like listening to an album for the first time - there's SO MUCH to discover. It was never my fave album, but when it came out for the first time in the USA (I live in UK) I bought a surround system purely for that one album, and I've never regretted it. I now LOVE that album to bits and can't wait to hear what they do to the rest, especially QueenII. |

I ABSOLUTLEY think that the studio l.p.s should be expanded! This is not a rumor that was pulled out of the air. This came from BRIAN MAY on his website at some point in the past with him saying what he would like to have done to the Queen catelog. Why not? As it is these discs (or at least the first eight) are only forty minutes long on average. They hardly fill up half a c.d. as it is and now everyone want MORE c.d.s when there is so much unused space on these?! Maybe not. Why not improve the products that are already released and are to be promoted with this unreleased material and not have them be inferior to whatever box sets? I for one am really just dreading them releasing the box sets and THEN putting the catelog in 5.1 and expanded with unreleased songs, demos, outtakes, intrumentals, edits, mixes, short promtional films, interviews old and new, and whatever other films pertain to each l.p. such as the making of the short films and any in studio films which I guess there isn't much of. The reason I fear this is because after all the money spent on buying the box sets they will then not have all the information about each studio l.p. release. This is why I think the blu-ray discs are going to be so phenomenal because they will be able to have all of this on one side of one disc in the best quality possible. Universal Music is doing this. Don't they own EMI? |

In 1996 Roger told me that there's no much unreleased complete tracks left after MIH release. About 5.1 - I agree with PieterMC. Technologies are changing since Adam and Eve - vinyl, CD, Surround Sound - what's next? Super-Mega-AllSurround Sound 28.1 and new circle of re-releases of old albums? And besides that - all these "new toys" are killing the spirit of albums in some cases (as well as releasing albums only over the Internet kills the cover/sleeve spirit), IMHO. |

We know there were still complete unreleased tracks, like Feelings Feelings, Silver Salmon and a studio version of Hangman. So you shouldn't let your personal communication with Roger shut the door on the possibility. (you're such a bragger...unless you were joking where as this post is pointless) Now just judging on dvd commentary theres a little bit of muddied memory about released tracks and video shoots so I could see how memory on unrelased tracks or complete vocal tracks used with a drum machine could be forgotten. |
