I've noticed a TON of their songs being used. Just in one pre-movie sitting in the theatre, I heard in advert/previwes
- Saved, TV show - Playing Baba O'Reilly.
- Invincible - I believe it was "Who are You".
- Some movie with George Clooney - Baba O'Reilly, again.
Or, the last two may be switched. And not in the theatre, there are the CSI shows...
I'm just writing this becuase it seems so sudden. I know they're mounting a tour, so maybe that has something to do with it ? But three Who songs in previews, at the same time - the same song used twice. Holy crap - a little restraint, maybe ?
By signing a record deal, one is "selling out." By performing large venues and selling merchandise, one is "selling out." By doing anything that pretty much involves a profit, one is "selling out." There's nothing wrong with this and people tend to put too much emphasis on it. It only really matters (in my opinion) if creative control is sacrificed. If creative control is still intact and present within the band, I don't really care what happens to the music after that.
They nipped this in the bud back in 1967 with "The Who Sell Out". Mighty fine album, if you ask me.
So what if The Who are in more commercials? It's Townshend's music, he can do with it what he pleases. Personally, my day brightens a bit if I hear a Who song on TV, and it doesn't matter to me if it's selling Nissans or Viagra. In fact, it might be counterproductive for the ad: I have no desire to rush out and buy the product, but it DOES make me listen to the Who song in question.
Slightly on topic, but has anyone heard the new Who single? Sounds fucking good. Can't wait to see them on 9/12 in Philly. Row 12 floor seats, baby!
New Who single?!?!? WHERE!?! I'm there dude!!!
And hey - I hope they continue selling out, everytime I hear their music on an ad it gives me a little false hope that music isn't as dead as I thought it was.
I would like to clear up any misunderstanding - first, this thread was named after that album "The Who Sell Out". I thought that would be cute, sorry if it sounded harsh instead.
I don't care if they, or any other band lets their songs be used for advertising. I don't have a problem with THAT.
I guess I should have been more specific, it's not all the band's fault, it's also the advertisers picking the same song at the same time.
It's helping them NOW by getting their music out to the public to a wider variety of people than who would listen to a classic/cross-over rock station.
But what about the future ? I wouldn't be thrilled about trying to get one of their songs for my product if I knew some other product could use it and thereby take away from the prodcut-song association (I've heard The Cars "Just What I Needed" used for so many things, it's not clever anymore and I don't associate it with one prodcut).
I'm sorry I couldn't be more specific before, but I had to pack my bags to travel 750 miles and I got kicked off the computer and had to wrap up quickly.
Ah, I didn't know that. They said on the radio it was his kid so we were both misinformed.
I was a little shocked to hear he had a kid, so there ya go.
Who's playing bass?
damn I still haven't heard this. I can't wait.
I was watching a current affairs program on TV a few weeks back and they had nice footage of the Leeds show they did last month - MAN I wish I'd been taping it because I can't find it anywhere else.
Seriously, The Who... good ol' Townshend still does the windmill. Fan-tastic.
MAGIC BUS is also used on some SUV commerical...
I like the exposure these groups get through these commericals... But IMO it doesnt do them justice at all...
It does make me want to go in the other room and put on one of their records though...
But i wish that music stations on TV would play this stuff as much as the commericals did.
