My Fellow Queen Fans. I have come accross the "Hot Space problem" about three years ago. I would love to hear your opinions about, whether you hate it, or love it...because it just so happens, that Hot Space is one of my top albums...why do some people hate it? |
Carol! the Musical 13.07.2006 14:49 |
Maybe it's cause they're not into the disco thing they were experimenting with. I think it's a cool album! :-D |
Nathan 13.07.2006 14:49 |
I like it. I listen to it quite often. It is a sign of just how great Queen are, if they can tackle a new area of music and produce a piece of work that some fans can like. It has some very catchy tunes as well as the great Under Pressure. |

Oh lord not another Hot Space topic....I think we should sticky this along with a "Was Freddie Really Gay thing", a "which song is the best" and "whats the album thing" along with the "Why does everyone hate Queen", "Where is John Deacon", and "Paul Rodgers sucks" topics....argh |

Personally all Album Discussion topics should be created/revived and made sticky on Serious. |

I warmed to it almost immediately! I think this was because i'd seen Live at the Bowl before getting the album and developed a liking to the songs. I love it, some fabulous work... apart from the exception of Body Language perhaps (which still is very sexy and hearing Freddie's sexy, low voice and his sighing really is WOW!!) Yeah, it is different maybe because Queen, for once, were actually following a particular genre of music instead of usually going along with their own self-made style. Still doesn't deserve such a bad reception though as it has some fantastic, under-rated songs. |

And its because of the LIVE AT THE BOWL performances. And i love UNDER PRESSURE etc and i enjoy the music vids on GVH2 from this album as well... So I'm sure i like the album once i obtain it... The one thing i love about QUEEN is they never do the same album twice, yet stay true to their own sound. Yes HOT SPACE is a different album, but there are QUEEN-esque nuances in each song. |

I think the reason people hate this album is because they wanted The Game II. If they'd open their minds, they'd realize this was one of Queen's finest and what I would call a "Freddie Masterpiece". |

As musicians, the album is great! But as business men, it sucks! A great musician can play alot of different genres of music well, but this isn't Queen's trademark sound. |

It is not as bad as a lot of people think. I wouldn't normally think much of disco stuff, but this is Queen we're talking about and they managed to do it Queen-style. The more I listen to that album the more respect I have for it. When I bought the album I remember thinking, "This really isn't as bad as the reviews said it was." |

Love it, with the acception of Body Language, and I dont mind Dancer, bt not my favourite track. I could listen to Staying Power over and over and over.... |

Very well said. I have always loved this album, particularly Body Language. I would love to have seen Freddie do that one Live! Grrrowwwl!Queen has played Body Language live in the USA and Japan a few times. I definately do not dislike Hot Space. It is a nice album. I especially like Dancer, Back Chat, Calling All Girls, Las Palabras De Amor. I like less Cool Cat, Staying Power (but I absolutely love the live version!), Life Is Real and (yes really) Under Pressure... although I think the 1999 Rah Mix of Under Pressure sounds quite good! |

There are indeed some facts, that kinda 'explain', why many people are so worried about HotSpace. 1) TheGame was such a huge hit, that whatever would have been it's follow-up only could have 'looked' disappointing. 2) It was far more 'experimental' as many other Queen albums. It is almost completely disco-style, and for that it's not bad. When i was new to collecting Queen and just obtained most of their albums, HotSpace definately was one of my favs. StayingPower was quite exceptional to me and i think it may be the most underrated track on that album. LasPalabrasDeAmor is some nice piece of music too of course. If i was to judge it now, more than 15 years later, i don't know if i still would call HotSpace my favourite Queen album, but to me it definately is not the weakest. Maybe Queen would have done better, if they had chosen different singles from the album, at least for the European releases. |
louvox 14.07.2006 16:16 |
After reading the comments on “Hot Space” I must say I disagree! 1. “Disco” is not a new gender of music. It had been around at least 10 years before, but it was called “Funk” 2. By the time Queen decided to experiment with it (Disco) it was already on the way out. 3. Instead of incorporating into Queen and making it their own, they simply copied what most had done already. 4. Most of the songs on that offering are weak by any standards. 5. The “live versions” I have heard of most of those songs are better than the studio version. 6. In my opinion Queen never really recovered after that disaster. They simply became just another Euro pop synthesizer band. |

Personally, I like Hot Space. Queen was experimenting with a new genre of music and I think hardcore Queen fans weren't ready for the "new stuff" (Disco - Funk). But I "dig it". It was nice to see their versatility. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why Queen appealed to me. |

Queen changed in the eighties to survive and generally did it well combining anthemic qualities of early works with generally subtle uses of contemparory synths. |

I love Hot Space! I think, personally, all of the songs are great! I dunno why people hate it so much. The people that i know, call it a piece of garbage. It certainly isnt. My reply to them is "have you gone mad"? I love it! I think it is awesome! But i have to admit, it is not Queen's genre. But it worked for them, in my opinion. |

The first time I listened to Hot Space, my poor little basement room became overcome by blistering heat. I had to change into a less modest set of pyjamas to accommodate. I decided that the album was entirely to blame and I haven't forgiven them yet. |

Mr. Deacon wrote: hot space was there second commercial album , the first was flash gordon... there music in that time was commercial... maided for money...How on earth could someone call the Flash Gordon album commercial?? If there's one Queen album that isn't commercial, it's Flash Gordon! It's not even a normal Queen album (by normal I mean: an album with songs) but a soundtrack for a movie. Two songs, the rest is music to fit with the movie. And although the music sounds nice, the release as they did it is far from commercial. |

UnderPressure became #29 in the US (and #1 in the UK) BodyLanguage even became #11 in the US The only 'major' US hit Queen had after HotSpace was RadioGaGa which made #16, no later Queen single even reached the US Top 40 any more. So Queen only 'recovered' in Europe, well some of the US single releases were quite odd choices... |

Unfortunately, I've picked up several copies in the "cut-out" bin over the years. No other Queen album made it there, not even Flash! But with Moogs and Oberheims, how could you not like it? Funny how those patches are the ones most sought after by keyboard players today! |

Yeah. I have a few of the cassette singles, and it was The Show Must Go On first, and Bohemian Rhapsody second. (Go to bottom of page to see US single track list) link I think there's even a promo single with just The Show Must Go On on it, but I haven't gotten that yet. The UK release of These Are The Days Of Our Lives was actually Bohemian Rhapsody for the first track, and then These Are The Days Of Our Lives for the second track, and it wasn't even a double A side. These Are The Days Of Our Lives could only be played when flipping the 7" single over. link The regular single for These Are The Days Of Our Lives was only available in the USA only. Never released elsewhere. link |
