SoulBrother posted this on the news page: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Queen's 'Queen' debut album is listed as number 2 in the list of 'Debut Albums You Hate To Love' Yet another cheap dig by a magazine increasingly dominated by opinions of affected journalists. For a balanced biographical view of an album put together by a young and ambitious band during awkward downtime studio hours see: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ i take issue with a few points made 1. it is a fair point "about it being difficult to love this album" - even amongst queen fans i find myself in a huge minority of having it as my second fave queen album (behind queen II) - most queen fans rank it lower in their own preferences...surely if i rank it so highly and can accept that for many "it's a difficult album to love" then why the need to defend it as you have soulbrother? 2 queen were not "a young band" by any means...freddie was 27, they were all LONG out of university...by most standards this is quite old for your debut album, also they'd all had previous bands/tours etc since about 1967... 3. lots of bands record debuts during "downtime" it's a way their agents can afford to get them studio time |

Well their wrong in regards to myself. I really really enjoy QUEEN. You can tell its a debut album because they were feeling their way around a bit. But i love it... ITs got some great musicianship on it. C'mon "LIAR" , "KEEP YOURSELF ALIVE", "THE NIGHT COMES DOWN", "MY FAIRY KING", "GREAT KING RAT" are AWESOME Tracks! In my opinion, its another one of QUEENS early albums that are overlooked by non-fans... Which is sad... |

1. it is a fair point "about it being difficult to love this album" - even amongst queen fans i find myself in a huge minority of having it as my second fave queen album (behind queen II) - most queen fans rank it lower in their own preferences...surely if i rank it so highly and can accept that for many "it's a difficult album to love" then why the need to defend it as you have soulbrother? I think the fact that it is your second rated says it all. I listen often to it with affection always and feel that other should too. 2 queen were not "a young band" by any means...freddie was 27, they were all LONG out of university...by most standards this is quite old for your debut album, also they'd all had previous bands/tours etc since about 1967... "Young" is a relative term and intended in the lifespan of the band, although Freddie was the oldest band member and I think given this and the fact that Robert Plant and Pete Townshend were in their twenties when the Led Zep and Who debuts, respectively, were released negates your point. Let's face it, The Arctic Monkey's couldn't have succeeded in the early '70's! 3. lots of bands record debuts during "downtime" it's a way their agents can afford to get them studio time Yes, but it is tough going and difficult especially when you have particular vocal and guitar harmony ambitions and challenges to make at 3.24am, and produce a body of work which is going to realistically eject you to the next level. It is for this reason that I feel that "Queen" is a brave debut which needs to be appreciated in the context it was recorded rather than the technical brilliance of the final recorded product (like all those other fans you mention in the majority)....The Night Comes Down is still one of my favourite essentially "Queen" tracks. As Brian said, a band finding their way..... |

i like the first two tracks. others are mediocre |

Actually their first album is one of their best. the first six songs are flawless, it's in my top five. Brian even said that he was surprised at how many fans still consider "queen" to be their favorite album. David lee roth/eddie van halen arn't the only rockers who consider this album a huge influence. |

The debut album is in my bottom third of the 15 Queen albums. I believe Liar, Night ,and Great are the only excellent songs from this album, and think Keep is a good song. However the remaining six songs are below average (although generally enjoyable). I realize I am in a minority with my thoushts that Fairy is a below average song. |

Hmmmm...didn't realize it was so disliked...I played the hell out of that album and eagerly awaited their second album...I loved the first, Queen II even more so . |

Really good album IMO, I like its rawness. There's no song I particularly dislike on it. |

Recently I gave the Queen debut LP a spin. And to my surprise, I never really listen to Queen anymore, I really really really liked the album. All tracks. I'm looking for a near mint UK original now :) |

Actually, it is my second favourite Queen album as well. After Queen II. What's not to love? (Except perhaps the instrumental version of Seven Seas of Rhye.) |

Love the songs, wish it had better production though. Still dreaming of the day C_Matt sinks his teeth into it. |

What the heck is "hating to love" an album, anyway? You love it, but hate yourself for it, like it's a guilty pleasure? I love to love it, myself. ;) |

The only thing I hate about Queen 1 is the sound of the drums. |

After a quick errand run, I plan on listening to this album today (loud) , as I haven't listened to it for awhile . It is on my iPod though . I'm going to try to figure out a reason why I would hate it . Doubtful I will find one .,,.it is after all the album that made me a fan of Queen all those years ago . |
