I can't tell for sure who deserved to win this game more. Both teams were so close to equal that it's hard to make a pick. On one hand the Argentines had more possession of the ball, but the Germans seemed to create more goal chances. I thought it was very low from Maxi Rodriguez to fake a penalty. On the German side Friedrich created a lot of foul play, and so did Sorin. Ballack was also whinning a lot and exaggerating his fouls. Kudos to Carlos Tevez and David Odonkor for putting a lot of balls on the field and showing a lot of skill. Those are the kind of players we need to see in this World Cup. Basically I thought Pekerman was the one to blame the most for Argentina's elimination. He took out one of his best and most creative players (Riquelme) thinking that by putting Cambiasso to defend they could keep the 1-0 lead until the end of the game. But why make the change 20 minutes before the game ends? However, the dumbest decision of all was taking out Crespo for Cruz. If Pekerman was going to exchange a forward, why not pick Saviola or Messi? |
its_a_hard_life 26994 30.06.2006 20:51 |
Nah.... me I wanted Argentina to win all the way in that match!!!!! Fuck sake. |
deleted user 30.06.2006 21:33 |
Yeah, Pekerman really threw it all away! With such good players he should have done better. He let Germany get back in the game and Klinsmann took his chances. The fighting afterwards can't be defended. These should be grown-ups on the field, but they were acting like children. I would love to see more of Messi, but with him on the bench and the players behaving like this I say "congratulations Germany." |

A penalty shoot out is always a matter of luck to a certain extent and I felt very sorry for the Argentinian players who were so close to winning. I also think that maybe the Argentinian coach made a mistake by sending out Riquelme who seemed to be the most dangerous player. Germany is one happy nation tonight. 2 months ago nobody would have expected that the team would do so well and of course Lehmann is the hero of the day. Watch out, Italy :) |

It was nice to see Kahn giving his team mate words of comfort before facing the penalty shoot out. |

It's a shame that Argentina lost, a shame for the players and the coach, not for the country (my opinion)... But Germany organized this world cup to win it, but Germany won't win, i don't know who will win, but not Germany. |

Watch out, Italy :)I usually don't support Germany, because of the way they play. But this time they are underdogs and Klinsmann has brought on an entertaining way of playing football, and it's good for the tournament when the hosting nation does well. Good luck. Italy looks strong, but so did Argentina. Nothing is impossible. |

Rick 01.07.2006 04:46 |
Lehnmann was diving before they shot the ball, because he knew in which corner the ball would go. The German team are training for this kind of stuff. In other words: You can't beat Germany with penalty-kicks. Only 1 German player ever missed a penalty during the World Cup tournaments and that was in 1982. Also, Germany only lost 1 time with penalties, in 1966. The famous Panenka-penalty is from that match. |

Mr Mercury 01.07.2006 06:05 |
Not sure if something started before hand but one of the Argentinian subs (Leandro Cufre I think) walked up to one of the German players and kicked him square in the nuts. Supposedly the German team were asking the Argentinians to be quiet during germany's final penalty kick. link |

Dito. I don't know, those German players really seem to be on such a trip at the moment, it will be very difficult to stop them. No matter if they are technically good enough. They have an enormous self-confidence, an enormous fitness and really enjoy playing together. Reading the interviews, it seems they are in some kind of trance. But somehow I begin to dislike the behaviour of some of my fellow German fans... I'm afraid many become more and more arrogant and impolite with our guests, if Germany continues to win. I'm not sure if that's healthy. |

"But somehow I begin to dislike the behaviour of some of my fellow German fans... I'm afraid many become more and more arrogant and impolite with our guests, if Germany continues to win. I'm not sure if that's healthy." Remains to be seen I suppose. But you are right - if there's two places you'll find unhealthy amounts of zeal and disregard for the 'opponent', it's sports and politics. They bring out the worst in people sometimes which is why I pay little attention to either. And - with my previous post, I wasn't trying to be a wanker, anyone. But I cannot stand people who throw the Nazi word around, it's just not groovy. I tell you what - you guys quit talking about Nazis and I won't bring up the Falklands War. :P |

Tonight I'll watch the match in my Italian local and the "winners" will comfort the "losers". There is always a certain amount of idiots everywhere but I don't think the German team should lose only to shut up the German idiots:) |
