This question still bugs me,who do people prefer more?!After all,Ritche Blackmore (who I consider to be the greatest guitarist ever, closely followed by Brian and Dimebag of course) wrote 90% of Purples material but he never got to play the music he really loved until Rainbow and produced some classics like stargazer.ANYWAY who do you like more and why?Do tell my dears! |
Nathan 24.06.2006 17:35 |
Well, I love both bands, but I think if I had to choose it would be Deep Purple, mainly because of the vast number of their songs that I really love. But Rainbow are a fantastic band too. Especially gotta dig the Dio era. |

I love Since You've Been Gone..i can play it on guitar. xD |
Maruga 24.06.2006 17:40 |
Deep Purple, obviously... |

Rainbow.. Although I haven't really heard enough of Deep Purple to judge fairly. |
deleted user 24.06.2006 17:47 |
It depends on the type of music you like,Rainbow are a bit heavier than Purple, take that into consideration! |

Ritche Blackmore IS A FUCKING LEGEND!!!! MUWHAHWHAHWHAHWAHHWHAWHAHWHAHWHAHWHAHWHAHAHAA :D A mate gave me a few songs from Rainbow so then I liked it so much I bought the Greatest Hits. Now I heard "Smoke On The Water" after I got the Greatest Hits of Rainbow and started buying songs from Deep Purple....It's hard to choose between the two... hmmmm not sure. I love them both! :D |
brENsKi 24.06.2006 18:10 |
i don't think there are any rainbow songs that are heavier than Smoke....black night...fireball....knocking at your back door...under the gun...speed king...call of the wild...flight of the rat...highway star blackmore's self-indulgence (rainbow ) was based more around melodies and songs that sounded more poppy - i surrender, long live rock n roll, can't happen here, all night long, since you been gone, street of dreams and can't let you go... his selection of vocalists - ronnie james dio, graham bonnet and joe lynn turner were all on the gentler (more feminine) top-end of the scale...none of these had the sheer rock vocals of gillan/coverdale.... the albums themselves - at least the vinyl and cd copies i have are definitely mixed toward the vocals/guitars and keyboards...you can hardly hear the bass on many of em whereas the bass/drums were very evident on purple recordings |

RAINBOW! Without a doubt. It would be even greater band without that jerk Blackmore. |
deleted user 25.06.2006 10:42 |
How can you say something like that? Ritchie is a bloody legend! I know he's gone off in a totally different direction now with Blackmore's Night (which is basically crap) but he's still one of the greatest guitarists out there. The man wrote Smoke On The Water for crying out loud! That's one of the most memorable riffs ever. |
deleted user 25.06.2006 11:26 |
Maybe not, but he's still a great guitar player. So they wouldn't necessarily have been a better band without him. |
Oszmercury 25.06.2006 11:55 |
Purple i think, they were amazin live, and have 4 albums that are classics, not many bands have that privilege, Rainbow is a classic band imo, and Blackmore, a guitar god |
brENsKi 25.06.2006 16:06 |
ok.. i'll add another bit to this as someone who has seen all the purple offshoots live rainbow - down to earth tour whitesnake twice 81 and at donnington rainbow at bingley hall gillan at reading and purple (mk II reunion - perfect strangers) 85 - knebworth i can tell you this:- rainbow....they were a bit lifeless live - bonnet was a bit lacking in personality, charisma and crowd interraction...plus - apart from smashing the fender - the man in black stood at the back and played whitesnake...he had paice and lord with him and marsden...and whitesnake were cool and bluesey - songs like fool for your lovign and ain't no love in the heart of the city were good gillan was awesome...no easy way rocked...and bernie torme played betetr than blackmore does live purple - the were great at knebworth...the mkII lineup buried the hatchet...but you could see that gillan and lord didn't get on with ritchie roger and paicey just got on with it |
