Does anybody know what Bono thought of Queen and Freddie Mercury. I can imagine him being annoyed by their apolitical stance but perhaps having a repsect for the music? |

Bono's a douche bag... end of story. And don't try to sell me the "But he helps millions of people world wide every year. He's a saint." bit because I don't buy it. Yes, he helps create awareness but beside that he's a two faced wanker. I remember the day he was gonna sing in Italy and was saying something about raising funds for Africa (great, right?) and then spending over 1,500 dollars to fly his hat, which he just needed to have for the concert, from England to Italy. He booked a private cab for the hat from England to the airport, a first class ticket on the plane for the damn thing, and booked another cab from the airport in Italy to wherever he was... why not FedEx the damn thing over night and donate the rest of the money to charity? Or better yet... SING WITH OUT IT! It's not like it's a magical music hat which makes you sing better when you wear it! What a jackass! P.S.- Just saw some pictures of him in People Magazine when he went to Africa, and he looked more uncomfortable than Dick Cheney at a gay wedding. Once again... two faced publicity whore. But at least his publicity creates awereness... damn him. P.P.S.- I don't hate U2... just Bono as a person. |

Most people don't do that unless they are actually committed to the project. Whether you think he's a "publicity whore" or not, I figure he's done more real work for Africa than most of his critics. |

None of you have answered my question hah hah, but some very good point shave been raised. I agree with Alan partridge that he's mentally ill. I'm a big fan of U2 because like Queen, it's anthemic but I can't stand his posturing. May I also ask if Bono really plays the guitar as well? |

I think there is a lot of jealousy about Bono. Let's just stop that. I am really no fan of U2. I don't know why, but it is not my kind of music. But I think it is great that Bono is trying to make a difference even though he sometimes uses wrong methods. |
Digitube 18.06.2006 12:19 |
:-D Get a Life Mr. Bono... I like the stuff U2 did in the 80's, hate the crap they did in the 90's. Songs like sunday bloody sunday, Pride, The unforgettable fire, with or without you, where the streets have no name etc are great songs imo, but bitching on Freddie shows Bono is not a *real* star. If we compare Bono's performance on Live Aid with Freddie's performance on Live Aid...wellll... Need I say more? Bono was struggling for the high notes, where Freddie had a marvellous voice that day and grabbed Wembley in the palm of his hand. I almost can see Freddie giggling backstage 13 july 1985 after Queen's performance, looking at Bono, saying " now how about that dear? <-) " U2's material is easy to sing, I covered a dozen of them without difficulties. Queen songs on the contrary... :-| It seems to me Bono was/is just very jealous. He always wanted to be the greatest showman on earth. But he may be very pleased if he ever was about to came in second. Too bad dear :-D Amen <-) |

You can't ignore them though. You gotta say he's at a higher level than most garden variety celebrity activists because he was Time magazines man of the year (even if it was shared that's a big honor). Personally I think it's a little misguided to ask for more money for Africa. They're getting a crap load of money. The problem is corrupt leaders blowing it all on luxery cars and expensive vacations and such. If he really wanted to be an activist he would do something to bring attention to that corrupt system and make sure the money gets to the people who really need it. |

Well, let me give it to you from a "lives-on-the-island-of-Ireland" perspective. Generally we're pretty proud of the *band's* achievements....though at the same time, we know they're only Irish when they're in Ireland. Musically, no band from this island has gone on to be as genuinely huge as they are. And I still think they've a few albums and at least one more tour in them. Someone on here said "ah they're nothing special, I've covered their songs and they're really easy". So? So what? Their songs generally are simplicity epitomized. But so what? They sell massively. They are instantly recognisable. Just like another band we know. But without the multi-layering. Have any of you been to a U2 concert in Ireland? It's quite a spiritual experience. And yeah, I can't believe I'm writing something that wanky either. But there you go. It just *is*. Bono may be whine-y. He may be annoying. He may even be self-promoting. Someone else wrote "why does he need to keep harping on about how much he gives to charity?" He doesn't. It is not disclosed how much Bono gives. Did he save Africa? No. Read this to see why not: link But he had a go. I think if anyone reaches a position whereby they can get the ear of the scumbag politicians that run the world from the pocket of Big Business, then it is incumbent on them to at least try. And if a short-arsed rich Irishman constantly going on about poverty in Africa bothers you, then the only advice I can give you is switch the TV off. Anyway...I'm sure they just *loved* Queen.... |

Bono may be egotistical, may not be as talented as Freddie (really now who is?) and vain, but at least he's doing his best to raise awareness about Africa. You don't have to like someone to admire them. I admire Bono because unlike 90% of everybody he's come out and said he cares about the third world and has put his name on the line with his beliefs. the sun? fore fuck sake. whos gonna believe the SUN? of all publications. those are the fecks that started ther hat rumor in tjhe first place. SO, you people wanna hate bono so much, so you search and search for a reason to hate him and desperately scant around looking for "evidence" that rpoves bono as some evil demom man.. like little flies scavenging around a dog's rotting shit. its disguisting. and the worst you can find on bono is this stupid hat rumor. which, was disproved a few times. and what if it was true? would that make bono a bad person? um.. no. who the feck cares? and why does it matter? youre gonna judge a person over THAT fuckin shit? it just goes to show how much bono HAS NOT DONE WRONG.. if the worst u can find is this stupid hat thing. its s freekin comical. and even that.. is... nothing at all. yeah.. so he forgot his hat... there may have been more to the hat thing than we know of (lets say if it was true, which was of course debunked..) yes, some people agree with bono on his political shit. some dont. OK.. i agree with him, but dont agree about how he is going about accomplishing it.. because i think bono has the wit about him to really show these politicians the real deal in a much better manner. he used to not be afraid to speak his mind... to refer to a politician as a wanker or an asshole.. now its kissing up almost.. even tho he prolly doesnt like the politician(s) anyway, but its kinda sad to see him have to go about it that way, but i greatly admire him for trying and doing it anyway and keeping with his goal!! he walks the walk.. talks the talk... he does it. he doesnt go out there... just to make some fucking media hype for himself like .. oh angelina jolie and brad fuckface pitt... who crave and crave attention. probably even made up their own baby's birth, for publicity and most likely dont give one shit about Africa. bono does care. and no, hes not gonna fucking announce how much hes raised for charity.. or how much hes given to charity... BECAUSE IT ISNT... RIGHT TO SAY IT. itd be showing it off.. and deferring from the real reason he does it. just becauyse he doesnt mention how much he donates doesnt mean.. that he doesnt donate! because he does!! but, hes making a good point now. that.. money really isnt the matter anymore. money could have gone in to help the people regain a constructive stability structure there in africa so that itd be easier for the people to.. take control themselves.. example... giving them food and shelter.. so they can... make an effort to help themselves. but now, bonos just asking for the politicians to be AWARE and to stop this nonsense. he isnt asking for money anymore. how many times does he have to say.. WE DONT WANT YOUR MONEY.. WE WANT YOUR VOICE.. YOUR AWARENESS. and yes, bono spent over a month in ethiopia in 1985 with his wife ali... this is where he witnessed some... pretty horrific things and it stuck with him.. hence, why he got so involved with live aid and continued with it when others didnt. who else in live aid actively did so?? while i might believe that theres no hope or africa.. because the world governments and their own government ar so greedy and sick and want to kepe africa poor no matter what... i sill look up to bono for fighting till the end and to be able to say that he never stopped and never let those people down. bonos a good guy. and to judge him on his vocal range.. is just REALLY PATHETIC AND LOW. both he and freddie are absolutely fabtastic vocalists. to be bitching about who was better at live aid (as you all are)... really is stupid. it also shows how superficial some of you are... bono has a great, great voice. while he may not have the range like he did 20 years ago... that voice holds more soul and character than most any other vocalist in the industry today... or anyday. he may not sing all "pretty and proper" like.. Michael Bolton.. but.. who the fuck |

Fuck Bono. "he's not doing "charity" work you moron." BIG FUCKING DEAL. I bet you walk past beige buildings with a swatch and correct people who get the shade wrong when commenting on how ugly it looks. "he's trying to help correct the mistakes off shitheads like George Bush." I wish he'd correct that mistake your parents made. "by helping combat things like hunger, poverty etc, etc, you erase the ability for things like hate, terrorism to take hold in a society." That's nice but if these things are so awful why are you still at your computer? Shouldn't you be out helping Bono? I'm not a great human being. I suck - but don't play the holier-than-thou game if you aren't out there combatting George Bush and his evil servants *yourself*. "take your hate out off your ass and look at things from a sensible point of view." My sensible point of view is that you're probably 12. Go to hell. |

First of all, who is Bono? And why does he need to fly his cat to Italy? Freddie would never have flown his cat anywhere - cats usually like to stay at home where they are comfortable in their own surroundings. I think they get really scared on planes and I can't imagine what one would do if hearing such loud concert music! I'm sure you could lose your cat that way and then he would never be available for any future concerts. |

Freddie pinned Bono viciously against the wall and basically said "what do you think about us now?" but from what i am seeing as far as Freddie AND Bono, pre-during-post Live Aid, have all been either good things or innocent joking comments. the comment bono made after live aid about freddie pinning him against the wall.. obviously said in good jest. though, it probably did happen, but no one took offence to it, nor was freddie hitting on bono or whatever... and i think bono was very aware of this and did not take it the wrong way. they were just all joking around about it. jesus nor did freddie mean anything by it. christ, people. i see nothing wrong here. on either side. queen's or u2's. freddie or bono's. |

im just trying to give you all a lesson in "thinking outside of the box" as far as these things go, aka "thinking outside of the cat litter box pile". that yes, do not take this so literally. do not take what you read in a tabloid magazine as fact. even if something did happen, dont take 100% of it as being exactly what happened. most is twisted. you must learn to have a sense of humor. especially understanding the BRITISH (that includes IRISH, SCOTTISH, WELSH, ENGLISH) senses of humor. that to someone else from another place, may sound offensive or rude, when it really isnt at all and nothing personal about it whatsoever. also, there are always different sides to a story. just because freddie pinned bono against a wall and said that to him, doesnt mean he was hitting on bono. but just being overly dramatic and silly... in a joking way. Freddie was like that! and when bono made that comment in the interview afterwards regarding Freddie doing that to him, you must understand that bono has a very funny sense of humor, and he can come across as hes very serious or joking, and especially if hes drunk.. everything comes out all weird. which, he was slightly tipsy at Live Aid. I think it was fairly obvious. they both respected eachother, and got along... i dont even see wtf's so wrong about what the fuck Bono said anyway after live aid anyway!! as for the (I forgot your name) comment about meeting bono at that charity event and you being a little snob... again, you're now detailing/admitting/or aware your own behavior which resulted in his response to you. besides, again... how do we know that this really even happened or that you perhaps are twisting the facts or exaggerating? its all PERSPECTIVE, people. and context. and again, people find the need to hate bono and look for things to hate him for, which arent even real.. or they arent anything whatsoever to warrant a hate for him in the first place. its been like this since i remember. if this and the freekin hat thing is all you can find... then, well.. whatever. next thing im gonna be hearing/seeing is people accusing bono of being a satanist because he... wears black all the time, or the brand of hair-dye he uses, or eats meat, or that his pet dogs ears stand straight up (like most dogs)... yes, something that stupid. its almost comical. |

Maybe if you did, your opinions would change. And may I ask how many actual U2 albums you have actually bothered to listen to? You might be very shocked. (and I can see the smartassed comments that will most likely follow this question, but I will make my point anyway.) Again, if you took a little bit of a venture down that lane, your negative opinions might just change. Bono/U2 is just as brilliant as Freddie/Queen... just they're different styles, backgrounds, messages, etc. Don't get me wrong. I am a U2 fan as well as a Queen fan. Arguing (verbally abusively) over who's best, who can reach better ranges (therefore in some people's eyes means they're a better person or artist, huh?), etc.. really is just a waste of time. Music isn't meant to be treated that way. It isn't about vocal ranges and shit like that. What the hell's wrong with some of you? Also, do a little research before you guys blast your mouths and opinions off. Got a problem with Bono's personality? Or how he doesn't give a damn about others' opinions and just goes out and does what he feels is right or wants? Well, I quite like it, to be honest with you. If you don't like it, and don't like what he's doing in this world (positive), and still want to divulge on that "hat" issue.. then well, shove it and seek some psychotherapy! hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah hah!!!! I fully agree with Zeni. Charity does little to solve problems, especially if it's done anonymously. Justice is the word for lasting change to the systems of the world. When someone is a celebrity, they certainly can bring awareness and interest to the masses. In being a U2 fan for nearly 15 years, I have seen enough of this and noone has a real logical reason behind their feelings. |

Well you've every right to be curious sirrah. It's just... HIM! The megalomaniacal, ego-driven thing only works if you have great music to back it up (which I just haven't heard from him in yonks). If he wants to be Bob Geldof and help the 3rd world, more power to him... but does he have to look so god damned *smug* when he's doing it? I mean... okay, perhaps it's unreasonable for people to piss on him while knowing so little, but in my view it's just as unreasonable for people to wank in his shadow and sing his praises while not knowing him personally. |

Good post Zeb. However, Bono maybe as smug as Sting, but Bono at least makes an effort to try and improve the world. |

"How's he act or look smug when doing this?" I see you don't believe me! God damn I wish I'd had my VCR rolling when I saw him on the news that one time... it was... ugh, damn... he was at a press conference, and he was waffling on about how big Live 8 was and how it was going to wake up the world leaders and shit, but he just had this awful look on his face and with every word he was giving his fist a little jiggle like he was 'really feeling it'. It just strikes me as disingenuous, and don't think I'm picking solely on Bono, I'm just talking about him because this is his thread. What about Madonna? HAHA. "Are you ready to start a revolution", she said to that crowd.... Cretinous. Again. You'll just have to shrug and say 'I don't believe you' because I wasn't taping at the time. But really, I've seen this guy act like a total gimp. Just my bad luck maybe. |

If Bono died and went to Heaven, I'm sure Freddie would give him a good thumping, just like Roger said he'd do to John Peel. |

But really, I've seen this guy act like a total gimp. Just my bad luck maybe.I watched it. All of the press things he did for it. They aired all the pre- and post Live 8 press stuff Bono and Geldof did, all over the world .. no need to provide any recorded stuff. In fact, I think its available online on various U2 boards anyway. And my opinion on it? I disagree with you. I have heard Bono speak of these matters, on some very, un-scripted, natural, from the heart ways... But, some of those press things he does, do sound kind of repetitious and dramatic sometimes, but thats just Bono himself. It could come across the wrong way sometimes, but certainly doesn't mean he is anymore or less serious about his campaigns. I honestly don't see what you saw. Maybe its because I am a U2 fan and have been following the band for a long while and kind of, understand and get used to the odd quirks and such of the band and Bono. Who knows. Or maybe I'm just braindead.... I don't see how he seemed non-genuine or, whatever else. |

"I honestly don't see what you saw. Maybe its because I am a U2 fan" " Or maybe I'm just braindead...." Hahaha... look, really. Enjoy the guy. I just get that vibe off him, and since we've both seen the same stuff I don't see either of us changing our view, eh? I mean look, to play Devil's advocate, I don't hate him nearly as much as those Gallagher wankers in Oasis (who *actually* said that if the Beatles were around in the 90's, they'd be Oasis). Paaathetic. "Comments like that.. really make me sad." Oh cheer the fuck up, at least he said he'd go to Heaven and not Hell. Besides, Chuck Norris will be the doorman at Heaven, it's not like he'll let in any troublemakers. |

"BONO ES UN GILIPOLLAS Y UN CHULOMIERDA!!" I was trying to translate :P I guess I fail at linguistics because I came up with; "I didn't know Bono had chlymidia." I've no future in translation it seemed. But that wouldn't be the first time I've been offered a spanking thanks to QZ, cheers! |
