why did he use it so often on the studio records, but not on live shows? the songs with falsetto are performed quite different on the live concerts compared to the cd-versions.
Dont know what a falsetto is, and I cant find my dic(k)tionary... So I´ll just go and do something else than replying here xDxD

He had vocal noduls (lumps on his vocal chords, something singers in concert are often afflicted with)it hurt to sing falsetto the whole time in concert for him so he lowered the notes. He maybe should've had surgery on his nodes but never did.

I don't agree with that statement because vocal surgery ain't no joke, hon. You don't want to risk it. Rest and exercises can get rid of them. The way they were touring he relly didnt have much time for rest you know. Between 78 and 79 they had like 4 tours didnt they (end of the NOTW, Jazz, Live Killers, early game) that kind of wear takes a toll...a toll that isn't anything critical and can't be remedied with rest (atleast I think, I dont have experience with using my voice like that). The decision not to have surgery proved right because when they stopped touring his voice improved as early as Barcelona.

I'll tell you a tale of someone called Bonnie Tyler.
Once in the 70's she had surgery to remove nodes, but against her doctor's advice she *talked* while her vocal cords were still recovering. Ever since, she had an almighty husky, ripped-up sounding voice which, while gave her a unique and kick-arse sound, left her voice permanently changed.
Vocal surgery is not a joke!
(cue Newsreel music).

Falsetto is really high unnatural singing, usually from a guy.
I read that was thought having surgery would ruin his voice.
One example of this is Rod Stuart. Now he's singing that standards crap...he sounds aweful!

few examples
rhythm of my heart
downtown train
young turks
maggie may
all good songs
I agree...he did have a great voice until he had throat surgery. Now he's singing standards like...well Billy Holiday songs and stuff. I guess he has the right voice for that sort of thing now after his surgery....but he sounds dead to me...sounds like he's got no more spunk, you know?
