**Starts singing**
Great King Rat was a dirty old man
And a dirty old man was he...**stops singing** just kidding, I don't actually know. I asked that kind of question on the 21st of May, which---according to the song---was the day he was born and the day he died (of syphillis).
He was an evil warlord/tyrant who lived for one thousand years. He used his forces to terrorise the good people of Queenland. Only I, Sir Nathan, head of the order of the knights of the Queenzone table, could stand up to him and engage his armies in combat. I and my fellow QZ table knights fought a vicious campaign against him which lasted seven years. We overthrew him, but alas, all my brave knights fell in combat. I am the sole survivor.
After his overthrow, he retired to a secret life where he was known as 'Bill'. I think he worked in a hospital in his final years.

wouldn't YOU like to know?
ha, interesting question, one I've thougt about many times. I've never come to any conclusions about this song: less than many including bo rhap. I think, though, that it is the supposedly wicked King Rat whos narrating the part of the song that gives you all of the "bad advice": as if it were sort of the way king rat thought or lived:
"now listen all you people--
put out the good and keep the bad,
Dont believe all you read in the bible...
You sinners get in line
saints you leave far behind"
blah blah about not listening to Mama and stuff...generally vile things.
this song... its so intriguing: because I think Freddie DID know what was going on but was only just aluding to it ON PURPOSE... like a puzzle left out there with most of the peices showing, but not much way to sort them. he taunts you with it too: "wouldnt you like to know?" and then says, "No, i'm not gonna tell you what you ALEADY KNOW".... as if its there before us to see....
"'Cause time and time again
The old man said it all a long time ago"
Great. Whos the old man? what did he say king rat and who IS king Rat? I've thought about this being sort of a self refection, maybe: how he was veiwing his won life.... there WAS certainly huge amounts of guilt swarming in Freddie this period of his life present in many other areas... but this particular song is so hard to string togther. But I think thats the way Freddie wanted it. Like a puzzle. Dont stop looking, and tell me if you realise it one day, friend... Till then, Just remeber... as far as the answer lies....
He told you once before!!!!!!
love, db
AWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!! What a little darling he is!!!
But getting back to the question I think Great King Rat was Freddie's old schoolmaster that he mentioned once.
That would be me then!
Great King Rat is my favourite Queen song by a long shot. I was thinking about it recently, and in some ways it's actually a bit prophetic - GKR dies at 44 (only one year out)as a result of a sexually transmitted infection.... spooky? Or am I just talking crap again?

No, Namejs, it wasn't. Hendrix didn't pass away of syphillis on May 21st. He passed away on September 18th, 1970 of---according to findagrave---suffication dut to inhalation of his own vomit. Although the cases remained in dispute, some poeple said that Hendrix commited suicide or overdosed of drugs.
