Has anybody got the Walmart Def Leppard bonus CD with the cover of Dear Friends on it? EDIT: You can hear a sample here: link |
Erin 23.05.2006 10:54 |
OMG..I don't think I want to bother buying that now. What a pile of shit! |
Scott_Mercury 23.05.2006 10:55 |
That pretty much wraps up the "Def Leppard and Queen sound alot alike theory"...which I have never understood anyway. |

This has to rank as one of the worst cover versions I have ever heard. Really. What in the hell were they thinking? They are such huge Queen fans, why they would do this is beyond me. I would rather listen to Crazy Frog than hear that again. |
beautifulsoup 23.05.2006 11:15 |
Well, crap. With my lousy connection, I can only hear a second here and there, and then it needs to buffer. "Dear Friends" being one of my fave Queen songs, for its simplicity, I can only imagine... But from reading this thread, sounds like I should be grateful I can't hear this version of it. |
mayniac316 23.05.2006 15:44 |
I didn't think it was that bad... it could've been a lot worse. |
Suigi 23.05.2006 16:00 |
Clockwise. All I have to say. |
Penetration_Guru 23.05.2006 17:04 |
It could indeed have been worse. Longer would be the most obvious way... Personally, I like Def Leppard, and some of the covers are ok (downloaded the album a while back), but this particular one is just....not good. |

from a reliable source I heard that brian loved it. Brian will ask Deff to be the next lead singer in Queen + on their tour trhough Finland, with as warmup Lordi |

Hmmm.....I guess I'm in the minority here. I like it. It reminds me of Cheap Trick. |

thenightcomedown wrote: Its better than Paul Rodgers singing thoughJoe Elliot better than Paul Rodgers?? Thats a f**king joke. Honestly..... I would kiss the holy ground beneath the sky of our lord to come into a contact with a frontman like Freddie or Paul Rogers. Honestly..... if Joe Elliot showed up for a audition, I probably would not let him in the band. To me, the man has no vocal power whatsoever. Freddie could rise over top of any drums or guitar.... Joe Elliot get buried underneath everything unless its a acoustic ballad. In my honest opinion Roger Taylor is a far superior vocalist to Joe Elliot from Leppard. Elliot is not in Mercury or Rodgers league. |

brian only loves it cause the email also praised wwry the smoking ban in public and mentioned how his music lifted a spirit from the throes of depression.... so it became comment of the century |

OMG yes Paul Rodgers so does look like Chuck Norris, cos i was watchin Way Of The Dragon the other day and i was like OMG he is the spitting image of Paul Rodgers! |
mayniac316 24.05.2006 07:43 |
I think Paul would sing a much better theme song for his own TV show... it'd be like "Walker: Texas Ranger" Q+PR style... Roger would be the bad guy that gets his ass kicked at the end, and Brian could be the kid that's getting bullied at school and learns karate from Paul. |
sbrown 24.05.2006 08:24 |
Joe Elliot better than Paul Rodgers?? Thats a f**king joke. And worst of all, it's not even Elliot singing it. It's some whiny bitch called something Savage...the bass player or somesuch, who is just awful |
Lisser 24.05.2006 09:25 |
The worst thing about that is the vocals. It sounds like someone has Joe Elliot's balls in their fist squeezing them. Then again, I haven't heard many Queen covers that I can say I enjoy. I think the vocals and music are just too complex. Even if you get someone that can do a good cover, like say George Michael of STL; he still couldn't cover many other Queen songs. It just happens that STL fits his range. I like Green Day's version they do live of WATC, but I like Green Day a lot, some may not. I doubt if Green Day could do much more of Queen. I admit that I can't stand more than half of what is on the Tribute Concert DVD and VHS. I can't even listen to most of it. Does anyone else feel this way or am I being a critical bitch? |

Def Leppard scares me and the guy's voice sounds so.. erm.. nasal-y? (sp?) Whiney? I don't know, but it's DEFinitely not worthy to sing Freddie's parts. |

How do I know my answer is as correct as an opinion could be? Because Def Leppard was my favorite band before I got into Queen. The first studio cover of one doing another is something I am very aware and interested in. I think it sucks, and nobody is more likely to want to like it as I am. Sucks is too strong a word. Good on it's own, dissapointing totally in it's promise and potential. Def Leppard has become more of a cheese ball pop act than a true rock band, and it's sad. I think after Slang bombed(most underrated non Queen musical work of all time arguably.), I think something died inside of their artistry and they become a nostalgia act, playing on recreating their past, and camping up on their nostalgia. That being said, the overall quality of their new cover album is incredible, just not a few tracks, including 'Dear Friends' which suffers from inferior vocals lead by their bassist, and an extended alteration which does no credit to the song. For what Queen songs Def Leppard could cover... there may be as many as 5 different songs that would have seemed worst choices than 'Dear Friends' for them to try on, but certainly no more. That being said, The ELO cover of 'Overture 10358' is the best studio track recorded of the new millenium arguably. I say recorded because the song that would tip it, 'Take Love', is still only recorded from live performance. |
