Why'd it get ragged on so much? I personally like it very much! Staying Power, Back Chat, Action This Day, Put Out The Fire and Under Pressure are some of my favourite Queen tracks, and I cant understand why it was so hated!! Sure people may have gotten freaked by the sudden change in style, but It was QUEEN, shouldnt they have known it was just a phase?! |

I Really like this album : Dancer, Staying, Palabras, Pressure, Action, Cool Cat are among my favorite Queen Tracks. This is just an album which need more committment, more patience to be discovered. |

I think the reason is because Queen came out with an album like 'The Game' which had a decent amount of hard rock, and then they kind of went left field with 'Hot Space' and alot of the fans back then felt that they were loosing their rock feel, and going down the R&B mode. I too like alot of the songs off of Hot Space, but back then it just threw everyone for a loop. |

I think it all came down to timing, at least here in the States. Disco was over by '82-not only over but actually suffering a severe back-lash. Rod Stewart, Kiss, Stones-anybody who had done disco took a lot of sh*t for it. Bites the Dust had been a huge hit, but it had been so huge and was actually played so often that people may have been "Queened out" to the point that no matter what they did it would have been slammed. At the time it came out (I was 17), I didn't like it. Three or four years later I began to listen to it again and began to like it more. I think it has aged well. I wouldn't be surprised if someone sampled some of the sounds for a song today. |
Jazz 78 19.05.2006 08:45 |
Most of the posts here are from much younger fans of the band but my personal experience was when it first came out in 82. I was and am still a fan and up to that point we were used to hearing great music from Queen. The Game was huge here in the States and everything up to then was AWESOME music from the band. But when Hot Space came out we weren't too sure what the hell just happened. It was like we (the fans) were cruising along and then all of a sudden we hit a brick wall. We were ued to rock and then this funky, R&B thing came out. Were certainly weren't ready for it. It was WAY ahead of it's time. I think it's interesting that younget fans like this album but when you're used to hearing great music year after year come out from Queen and then this album comes out... it really changes your view of the band for a while. Though there are some really good songs on it. In general, it was a big left turn for a band that up to that point did everything right. But that didn't stop me from admiring their music. |

You have to understand. At the time it came out, Queen fans maybe you or I who love the album now would have been..."What the heck is this?". Within the scope of when it came out/between the albums it came out with. But with time, like a fine wine, it have matured. So at the time, I can see why it was lothed. But not anymore. Look at Zeppelin 3, when it came out everybody was looking for Whole Lotta Love part 2, but got Electric/Folk/Acoustic music and they lost a lot of fans with that one. But Zep 3 over time is one of their best. You can sit around all day and chose albums that at the time was universily panned but now 10, 15, 25yrs later are some of the best albums in each band catalogs... |
Jazz 78 19.05.2006 12:42 |
Well said!!! I was 16 when it came out and a fan for several years prior to that. I didn't loathe it but was definitely a slap in the face when Body Language was released. Under Pressure was the first song we heard and the general feeling was that this was going to be a great follow up to the Game. But nobody was ready for what was to follow. The younger fans seem to embrace it these days. Back then I was the same age as some of the people that posted here and we spent four years listen to fucking disco. People are more forgiving these days. Good for you younger fans!!! Rock on! |

i love the hot space album. it is very sexy i thought. i remember when metallica came out with load most fans hated cause they cut there hair and the music was not up to pair with there other ablums. for one i didnt like load. it was more alternative than heavy metal. and not very metallica like. i'm glade metallica is back to there roots. granted the hair is for some of them still short. back the queen album america hates change when they love a band or a singer and if they come out with something different they usually dont like it. |

i am going to add my bit to this one.... i bloody-well hate it. imo - it's the biggest crock of shit they ever produced. 1. syndrums 2. synbass 3. too much funk 4. there's no natural flow to the album...the songs sound like a disjointed bunch of tracks, not a well-constructed-fit-together album 5. many of the lyrics are lazy - almost like the band felt a need to "get something out at all costs" 6. Roger and Brian didn't (and don't) like it 7. Freddie was even almost apologetic for it...at MK Bowl..."now most of you know that we got some new sounds out in the last week. for what it's worth, we're gonna do a few songs in the funk, black category...whatever you call it. that doesn't mean we've lost our rock n roll feel, i mean it's only a bloody record...people get so excited about these things" btw - before you criticise me as dyed in the wool, boring traditionalist....i bought the album at the time...and genuinely hated it...i then gave it another chance on cd much later on...and i still hate it...it is (imo) souless (ironic huh) substance-free (even more ironic - considerign the drugs freddie was inhaling) pap...threw cd away |

The first two Queen albums I ever owned (apart from GH1) were ADATR and Hot Space. That's how I discovered Queen, an incredibly versatile band. We had, on one side, one of the most complex and layered album in Queen's catalog, and on the other, a funky little album with some catchy tunes. I also noticed a song with a Japanese chorus on one hand and one with a Spanish chorus on the other. I just loved the band from that moment on. I remember listening to Put out the fire, Under Pressure and Dancer one moment and then Teo Toriatte, Good old fashioned lover bow and Drowse the next. Right now, I actually enjoy more listening to Hot Space than ADATR, mainly because I listen to music in my car most of the time and Hot Space is a great album to drive, hehe :). I actually like Hot Space more than I like Jazz. I've always thought Jazz lacked something, it was like a grayish album for me. NOTW I love, I like Queen I a lot and I used to listen to ANATO a lot in my mother's record player (back in 1992, there were CDs already but I only had that album in and old vinyl). It took me some time to get to like Queen II but now I like it very much. I recognize these albums to be real masterpieces on their own and I fully acknowledge the band's originality and craftmanship in the 70's but I can't help to love Hot Space. Whenever I show some Queen albums to some friend I usually try to cover the whole Queen spectrum and it usually includes something from Hot Space. They usually like it very much. I don't say it's going to be regarded as Queen's best album in some years but at least they were still experimenting and it was exciting. I'm 24 years old. I've been a Queen fan over half of my life now and I can't help it, I like this album a lot! hehe :) Great album to listen while driving and it's not coming out of my car's CD player any time soon.. :P Wiley |

Bri and Rog have both said in interviews that they didn't like it...and freddie "apologised" for it at MK82....so 3/4 of the band accept they misjudged things a little...that's endorsement enough...i remember hearing one interview and thinking "bloody hell, they actually feel the same way as i do...about their own record" |

I like Hot Space. I mean I could listen to it almost any time (it's got shallow "I wonder when we're gonna make it" kinda stuff, but as you go further there is action this day, and what about life is real?). well I usually go past back chat or body language, but it doesn't mean the cd/cassette/vynil (sp?) is worthy of the trash can... There are two things I don't understand about fellow Queen fans. They seem to hate AKOM, which though very eighties had some great hard rock, One Vision, Princes and Gimme The Prize and two ethereal ballads, One year Of Love and Who Wants To Live Forever. Even Pain/Pleasure is catchy enough. Yet they sem to like the 40 or so minutes of utter tripe that is The Game, with two of Queen's worst songs (Rock It and Suicide), no rock, dry production and an apalling drum sound. It was Queen trying to be new wave and it was awful. Hot SPace is somewhere in between I guess. Rant over. |

Sure, there are some good tracks on there, but 'One Year of Love', 'Pain', 'Don't Lose Your Head' and 'Friends' are pretty dull, in my opinion. And songs like 'One Vision' and 'AKOM' sounded much better live. 'Gimme the Prize' is fun (especially the "bagpipe" solo), and 'Who Wants to Live Forever' is one of my favourite Queen moments. I've never cared much for 'Princes' though, sounds unfinished somehow. The Game has some outstanding tracks, which somehow make up for the somewhat less interesting ones, like 'Play the Game', 'Save Me', 'Sail Away', 'Dragon Attack'. And I much prefer the dry drum sound on The Game above AKOM:s heavily produced artificalness. |

regarding this magic vs the game discussion, I think the game is the overall stronger album of the two. I'm not a huge fan of rogers songwriting, so coming soon and don't lose your head are my least favorites off their respective albums. the game is their strongest eighties album, but A kind of magic is still fantastic. |

Oh well. Not only the youngest 15 year old fans like Hot Space and you don't have to be a Stepford fan to like it. I like the album but I don't think Queen were flawless. I like other bands but it just happens that Hot Space was the second Queen album I had (I was 10 years old) and I liked it a lot. It'll always have a special place in my Queen fan heart, hehe :). A friend of mine who is my age (about 24) used to tell me that Hot Space rocked and that he loved to play Body Language in his car with the Bass all the way up. I was kinda surprised to hear that, because I was in my ANATO/Queen2/Innuendo artistic Queen period. Then I rediscovered Hot Space and enjoyed it a lot, because I remembered listening to the album about 14 years ago without knowing almost anything about the band and just loving it to bits. I just like it. It's not a masterpiece. It's not Queen's best musically diverse album but it's very enjoyable. Good music to drive with, hehe :). See ya, Wiley |

In my opinion, some album songs had a soft feel to them, yet when performed live they were played much stronger. Brian is a perfect example of it. Live his music has a brilliant sound, in studio his music sounds softer, cleaner, etc. If Hot Space had a hard feel to it, and wasn't so polished, it would be a much better album. Stronger guittar presence would do the job. I like Hot Space live, but from the actual record Body language is my favorite. |

Hot space was an experiment. I think that someway it helped Queen to develop their sound in the '80s, even though it went a little too far. Anyway I think it is enjoyable to listen to it, although hopefully it's just a 'moment of transition', that remains an 'unique' in their production. |

But don't tell me you didn't like the Milton Keys Hot Space sound.luthorn wrote: In my opinion, some album songs had a soft feel to them, yet when performed live they were played much stronger. Brian is a perfect example of it. Live his music has a brilliant sound, in studio his music sounds softer, cleaner, etc. If Hot Space had a hard feel to it, and wasn't so polished, it would be a much better album. Stronger guittar presence would do the job. All of the Hot Space songs? What about Under Pressure? I think, Freddie sung Staying Power quite well at MK, plus, if we realize that the working title was Fucking Power that makes the song that much more fun to listen to. Freddie's singing his lungs out about his Fucking Power and such. Anyway, just my thoughts. But hey, if you didn't like Hot Space that's fine too. Cheers!!! I like Hot Space live, but from the actual record Body language is my favorite.DID YOU JUST SAY "IF HOT SPACE WASN'T SO POLISHED" OR WAS IT JUST MY NAUGHTY IMAGINATION?? You have whale cum in your ears, buddy... You're so wasted. |

The CD is crap, but some of the songs sound great live. If had recorded them more the way they preformed them live, it would have worked much better. Louis |

Thank you all for your comments & feedback. I love Queen. I believe they are one of the top 5 best and most influential bands of all time. I discovered Queen about 1977 and quickly become an ardent fan. I was fortunate to see them live four times (1977, 1978, 1980 & 1982) probably the best live shows I have ever witnessed. Their work from Queen I to The Game is miraculous and at times breath taking. The carved out a unique sound that is unmistakable. Unfortunately for most fans in the USA like my self, instead of inventing new concepts or continuing to be leaders of their time they simply became followers, thus they lost their original sound and it was hard to tell them apart from most of the other synth bands of the day. I totally understand wanting to incorporate other types of music into Queen, but instead of taking that and making it their own, they simply copied what others have done. For the most part from “Hot space” to “Made in Heaven” there are a few flashes of brilliance. Most of the time it seems like they were trying to write a hit song. Trying just to fit in on what was going on around them. “Hot Space” is my least liked offering from them, but when they preformed those song live with their Queen sound, most of those tunes rocked! In my opinion the same could be said for the rest of their later output as well. Also, Freddie’s songwriting waned for that point on too. He was probably the most prolific of the four. It seems that he never got out of that disco/funk thing they tried. For the most part Roger kind of took over as the main songwriter and although I like some of his stuff, he will never be the same class with Freddie or Brian for that matter. I was got the feeling Roger wanted to be a front man. Louis |

no, the album was good, but the cover looked like crap. It was a copy of some other famous album or painting.... Queen II was more original in its cover, thats why the album was more appealing, especially emos who cut their wrists. wtf did i just talk about?! |

I think it was a copy of merlyn monroe picture. |

The Game was their last excellent album. After that they made some brilliant songs on every album, but never an album so great again. Hot space is the weekest IMO. |
