It's clever stuff. When you watch the weatherman/weathergirl do their thing, they generally stand in front of a blue or green sheet, that is replaced by shitty graphics afterwards. What they would have done in this video, is instead of the blue sheet, you go into each frame painting out what you don't want to see. It's called Rotoscoping, I *think*... I do a lot of this shit, but never on this scale. It's very well done. I wish more Queen filmclips were done in this style though... Lord knows they have the budget to do this kind of basic (but time-intensive) effects work... heck, they could even do Freddie "Gollum" style. I just wish the videos would have more effort put into them as opposed to yet another DoRo video. |

I knew that they did the weatherpeople that way, but I've never seen anything turn out this good |

"Amazing what they can do with TV now. I knew that they did the weatherpeople that way, but I've never seen anything turn out this good" Well that's the funny thing, technology to do this kind of thing is what, 15 or so years old at least - but the key to getting it to REALLY work is having good stuff to insert footage into. They did a great job of lighting their set and making it look like Freddie just 'fit' into it. It's incredibly clever in that regard. |
Nathan 17.05.2006 13:33 |
How come they missed out the verse which begins: "You can't turn back the clock, you can't turn back the time"? |
AspiringPhilosophe 17.05.2006 13:35 |
I imagine that as much time as it took to get that just right, it would have been much more to do the whole song. I love that song though...it's a tear jerker If that technology is 15 years old, makes you wonder what kind of new technology is being kept under wraps..... *grins mischeviously* |
Queen_Rox 17.05.2006 14:09 |
I saw it, too one night and thought the same thing you guys are thinking, and that's "how'd they do that? This video is so amazing!" |

That was AMAZING!!!!!! Through out the whole thing my jaw dropped and my eyes was popping out! That is REALLY clever what they did, looks like he IS on stage with them and when Freddie finishs and walks off it's like he's REALLY walking off the stage.... What was this made for? Also does anyone know when and where this all took place? |

Also does anyone know when and where this all took place?I think this was in Germany, but I can only get that by watching the poster in the back, I think it said "Queen, die show" or something like that, and I know that "die" is a German world (when you aren't speaking of death). I actually saw it on the announce forum, it was posted by sebaspedre, maybe he'd know |

Spot-on with what it is Zeb. Rotoscoping is WAY older than 15 years, though. The lightsabers in the original Star Wars films were done in the same way. So, that makes it at least 30 years. Not sure when it was done the first time. You can do it with many programs and link has a great program for doing it. Yup, I really like the video. But on the whole thing not being the complete song... Is it not more likely that the band in the video didn't perform the entire song and therefore, whoever made the video, didn't have enough footage to pad it out and make it work? And of course, if the band on-stage didn't perform the full thing, looping stuff round wouldn't really work. Peace, Adam. |

ok.computer 17.05.2006 16:24 |
If I'm correct, the singing guy in the audience with the glasses is one of the DoRo guys? And is that Phoebe near the end....? "Die" is one of the German words for "the", by the way. That was excellent.... |

"huh, I swear he was gone...we all have been lied too" or something like that. Ofcourse that won't ever happen, he is really gone and he is in a safe place now, no more in pain. |

Apart from the Freestone one, they're done pretty damned well. Peace, Adam. EDIT: Actually, maybe I'm wrong. Just watched it again and can see them all looking up as if they're watching a screen. So, I guess people like Hutton, Freestone and Hannes (or is it Rudi?) could've been guests. And then someone stages this band with Freddie stunt. It's so hard to tell, now! Of course, the only possible tell tale sign is the shot of Hannes which(torpedo twin no.1!) is used twice. |

Great video, they shoulda put the other guys in it too (I mean - as they are now. It would've been interesting). |

there is this clip with Freddie and Bowie too.....remember...i guess it is the same trick? Anyway...this was really nice to watch...with Phoebe, Jim Hutton and Rudi Dolezal in the audience, and as i recall, the blonde lady used to run the fanclub before Jacky....? |

I have mixed feelings. Its a lovely piece of work and technically its very well done. It does seem a little morbid though, using Freddie's image, from his final on-camera performance, for a TV special. Part of me thinks it would be better to let the dead rest and not try to resurrect them virtually. Perhaps our technology *has* gone too far. I'm of two minds about it really. Its bittersweet, I'll put it that way. Poor Jim and Phoebe, seeing Freddie there but not there. I can only guess at the mixed feeling they might have had. Jim looks terrific, btw. I'm glad to see him looking healthy and I hope he is doing well indeed. Anyone know when this was broadcast? |

The Visible Man 18.05.2006 13:21 |
this was broadcasted on the german television channel "kabel 1" on the 15th may. It was a two hour show called "queen - die show" (queen the show). Guests were jim hutton, rudi dolezal, peter freestone, the german ensemble from the we will rock you musical. klaus maine from the scorpions and two other german celebs. Interesting for me was, that roger and brian sent a video message in which brian was in a music studio. So it seems that there really may be a studio album in the future. But that is only my thought. After the show they aired a one hour biography about freddie mercury. Some new interviews i have never seen before. For example a very extended interview with freddie from 1987 where he stands near the jukebox. Not just the parts which are widely known. Hope you know what i mean. I have the show and the biography on tape. If someone is interested in it, just ask. Of course its all german and with commercial breaks. But the original voices can still be heard, so it's possible to listen to the english original comments, i guess... excuse my bad english ;) |

Just a quick thought...those other musicians on the stage with him...those wouldn't have been some of the guys that actually played on the 'Mr. Bad Guy' album, would it?? I mean Freddie said himself all the guys that played on that one were basically all German players, and being the show was in Germany...I could be totally off my rocker on that one, but is it possible?? |
