Does it matter...? But since your asking, he would probably still be doing something Queen, but probably mostly quiet. And there wouldnt be any damn Robbie Williams/Crazy Frog/5ive covers of Queen!!! Gah! |
chefman5150 17.05.2006 08:21 |
No, there would be covers...just...um, not quite to the scale that we have now. I'm sure Fred would still be with Queen, but he'd do the one off solo thing as well I'm sure of it... |

Freddie would still record albums and tour with Queen so that "Made In Heaven" wouldn't have been released. and Paul Rodgers wouldn't tour with Queen. I mean, Rodgers is a great singer, but someone told me that singers tryig to sing lead live for Queen's tour is like trying to fit into someone else's big shoes (correct me if I'm wrong). |

His feet were kinda small... Now, Roger, he had big feet! Maybe they've shrunk... |
Sebastian 17.05.2006 12:12 |
Anyway, it'd be nice to ask Freddie's spirit if he was in fact a fan of Paul's, or if Roger and Brian made that up in order to justify their tour. |
john bodega 17.05.2006 12:42 |
I guess we'll never know Sebastian! As for what he'd be doing if he were alive still... I think he used to shortchange himself on the subject of aging and being unable to do what he did. Singing-wise, he was only getting better with age I reckon. He was slowing down on stage, but he always would have been able to record kick-arse stuff. |
mystic_rhythms 17.05.2006 13:20 |
Let's see...I believe that if Freddie was still alive, he would most definitely not be doing what he did in the 70's/80's. Obviously, at 59 going on 60, it's unimaginable to think of an older Freddie prancing around, spinning and running across the stage. It's a little far-fetched... I would hope he would be continuing his solo career, if he were still alive. Mr. Bad Guy and Barcelona had some very good moments, and The Great Pretender (the song) was a welcome change to his otherwise wild style. Not only that, look at solo careers from veteran artists these days. Paul McCartney - His solo career has been amazing, even after the breakup of the Beatles. Chaos And Creation In The Backyard is probably his best album yet. Mark Knopfler - The former Dire Straits frontman has been doing great. His latest album, All The Roadrunning (which he recorded with Emmylou Harris) is a good listen in my opinion. Different in sound, but good. David Gilmour - Former Pink Floyd frontman has been doing very well solo. After breaking from the band, he released a couple of solo albums, and his latest record, On An Island, has been very successful worldwide. Don't get the wrong idea, though: I'm not saying Freddie would quit Queen and it would be over, no way. I'm saying he should keep Queen going, but put some more attention on his solo career. Queen has done so much already, so Freddie's solo career could use a good boost. |

From "The Guardian" newspaper, May 17 2006 After recording their triumphal Innuendo album, and undertaking a few select dates in Europe, Freddie Mercury retired somewhat from the music scene. Roger and Brian had solo plans, while John needed to go on holiday. His days between 1990 and 1994 were filled with travel, parties, shopping and time spent with his parents and family. After many years of life on the road and in the studio, Freddie realised that it was time to take stock of all that he achieved. On the cusp of 1995, however, he gathered the boys together to talk about what the final chapter of Queen would look like. He pooh-poohed the idea of hiring some second rate archivist to gather together the back catalogue, and while Brian and Roger concentrated on solo work, he began to pull together a range of material which reflected the "Queen Process" from across all their albums. It was while undertaking this work that he re-discovered some out-takes from Under Pressure, and struck upon the idea of making his own "duets" album. Between 1995 and 1996, he pulled together a variety of artists, both young and old, who realised that working with a national institution like Queen would not only yield a top selling album, but reflect well on their own careers. The subsequent album, while hit-and-miss in content only served to show the incredible talent of Freddie Mercury, both as band member and producer. In 1997 he won the Ivor Novello award for his duet with Bono, while critical acclaim was given for songs with Paul McCartney, the remaining members of the Who, Placebo and Mary J Blige. Less critically-acclaimed was his effort with Ronan Keating. With a boxset riding high in the charts by 1998, Queen decided that it was time to have one final session of recording for new material. Over a two year period, the band recorded a double album of material which reflected the styles of their music across the previous twenty five years, as well as showcasing their still-evident blinding talent. The album - The Curtain Falls - was released in December 1999. It became the first Number one album of the new millenium, the first original album where all four members of a band wrote No 1 singles, and stayed in the Top Ten for the following eight months. The phrase "leave them wanting more" was never more apt. Queen won Best Original Album, Best Single, and a second Outstanding Contribution award at the Brits that year. All four members were awarded OBEs. The band were approached to lend their musical strengths to a West End Musical, however, none of the storyboards presented by Ben Elton really hit home with Freddie. Having a final musical veto, he convinced the band to shelve the idea until such times as a competent writer appeared to undertake the task. While retirement called, Freddie had just one last musical task to fulfil. In early 2001, mindful of the fact that he was now in his mid-fifties, he organised a series of semi-acoustic concerts in the Royal Albert Hall over a three month period. The 40 sell out shows heralded a finale for his public life, and he stated in a rare interview with the Observer "it's been great to do a proper farewell - the fans deserve it; but that's it. Concert over, interview over, career over. One more? What do you mean, one more? That's what I'll be saying to the bar man in ten minutes - one more! Now fuck off." Bono of U2 recently said, "I tried to contact him with a view to helping out on the Live8 thing, but he was having none of it. He really HAS retired. Shame really - it would have made the concert a fuck's-sake more listenable...." As he heads towards his sixtieth birthday, Freddie Mercury divides his time between Garden Lodge in London and his home in Montreux, with his partner Jim Hutton. Early in 2006, a meeting held at the Granita restaurant in London attended by the four |
