I recently bought a copy of Deep Purples Machine Head 25th Anniversary, cos I felt my DP collection was a bit thin on the ground - I noticed straight away that the track "Pictures of Home" has a striking resemblance (albeit in a 70's DP style) musically to Brian's Resurrection, which is a great tune by the way.
Anyone else think there this track might have influenced Brian at all?
Or is it just coincidence?
I think they may well be in the same key, although Im far from an expert, it sounds similar to me.
Anyone know if Brian is a Ritchie Blackmore fan?
Just some food for thought anyway.
Cheers,
Matt
Never heard it. Me brother has some Deep Purple I'll dig it out.....

Hmmm. Slightly different rhythm. I would say they're pretty similar though.
The credits for the song are Jamie Page, Cozy Powell, Brian May.
It first appeared on Cozy Powells album called 'The Drums are Back' and was actually an intrumental track called 'Ride to Win'.
Thats not true, Brian did write the music. But he got the idea from a demo Page did. So he worked on it as an instrumental track for Cozy's album. Later he decided to also record this song for his solo album and wrote the lyrics
Which always made me wonder by the way:
Nothin' But Blue album version - words: May - music: May/Powell
Nothin' But Blue guitar version aka Somewhere In Time - written by May/Powell/Makin/Nicholls
Why is it that mr Makin and mr Nicholls are suddenly ommitted in the non-instrumental version?
If it was the other way around I could guess that Makin/Nicholls wrote the lyrics, but that's not the case.

I just checked the sleeve notes on my Japanese copy of The Drums are Back and Ride to Win is only credited to Jamie Page. Ride to Win on Cozy's album is certainly different that the orginal Jamie Page version but it is credited as being written by him.
I have an interview with Brian somewhere where he said that when he heard the track that he could imagine it with lyrics and asked Cozy if he could put it on Back to the Light. Brian added some parts in the middle of the track that are not on the Ride to Win version.
So who do we blame for that part in the filmclip where Brian May turns into a witch with snakes crawling out of his eyes??
Or how about all the rockcliming on the volcano?
Damn - Resurrection is a mighty video, I'm going to go watch it again!

But Pictures Of Home is a great song! Very good drumming.
Hmmm. I dunno. The melody isn't the same, it's in a different key, but I reckon these two are cut from the same loaf. That is not a bad thing if you ask me, I love both songs (now that I've heard Pictures of Home).
There are similarities, but one mustn't look at that and say 'oh no! They're accusing Brian May of plagiarism!'. I for one am not doing so. Similarities aren't always a bad thing.
Oh god knows Im not suggesting plagiarism - probably no more than an unconscious influence on whoever actually wrote the music.
Just thought there was an interesting similar edge to them, glad you agree.
And since its been mentioned - I really like both versions of Nothin but blue/Somewhere in time - great tune with and without lyrics, lol.
