I was listening to Brian May - Live At The Brixton Academy this morning on the bus, and I noticed that his drummer seems pretty excellent. Not quite as good as Rog, of course, but good. Anyone else think so?
Cozy Powell, he was (sadly gone now) one of the best rock drummers going, Rainbow was probably his finest hour!
later replaced by Eric Singer for the second BM outing, also a great drummer with the lkes of Kiss
Cozy Powell was a good drummer and I remember Brian referring to him as the 'greatest sticksman to ever live' or something to that affect when I saw them on this tour...but anyone can sound good with a double bass set up. What was that Armada crap all about?
Was a good drummer but not the 'greatest' surely!
I saw Cozy with the Brian May Band in Hollywood, and I have to admit he was probably the best drummer I've seen live, and far better than our Roger. Actually in the lists of best drummers you most likely will find Cozy Powell instead of RT.

They have very different styles, but I prefer Cozy to Roger as well. I love the energy and power he brings to a song, although it can be overbearing at times. But all in all, he was a real powerhouse. Listen to "Now I'm Here" on the Live at Brixton album for an example of him turning up the energy a few notches.

not sure I agree about the "anyone can sound good with a double bass set up" it's bloody hard to do well and not just blast away for the hell of it, Cozy used them very well IMO and had a real style, Eric on the other hand also uses double bass drums but although he is a great drummer, he has no discernible style of his own, (one of the reasons he gets lots of studio work) Doesn't make him a bad drummer just not one you could say Arh that's Eric on the drums, Cozy was always recognisable.

Something many people don't know is that he was tipped to "replace" Bonzo in Zeppelin. However, after time away, the Zeppelin boys felt it wasn't right to continue, so Cozy went his way, and Page, Plant and Jones went theirs.
