As the question states what do you think is actually in the canon of queen i've been thinking about this for a while and i've come up with this. There are 15 studio albums and say roughly 10 songs per album yes, and when working on a album i would roughly say 15 tracks to work on so then with the ratio of ten tracks per album you would therefore have five leftover songs. Take for instance queen1 no mad the swine silver salmon possibly polar bear and maybe other smile? stuff that they tried and then put aside, and that just from the debut lp oh i forgot Hangman!!! just in case it was recorded. You go through the albums and i would guess they tried and recorded 15 songs leaving at least 2 to 3 songs by the wayside and they soon add up with each album there after. Feelings from NOTW sessions is another example that a finished song was unused, and i would expect that trend to carry on as queen were nothing but creative in the studio. When the works Akom miracle and innuendo albums were made we know by fact of demos that their output was flowing and that's why i expect a good selection of finished songs to be on a boxset anthology , where i think a few more deacon and taylor songs might see the light as their dominance in writing songs and good songs at that will emerge. Do you think my point of view is valid and realistic?. I would value you thoughts on this?. Thanks. |

"Feelings from NOTW sessions is another example that a finished song was unused, and i would expect that trend to carry on as queen were nothing but creative in the studio." What makes you think that Feelings is a finished song. Because it has a beginning and an end? That means 90% of the home demo's would be finished songs. |

There might not be as much as we hope. I've read interview with Eddie Van Halen and Jimmy Page re. the same topic and in both cases they said they pretty much used everything in some form or another. The stuff that was left (in most cases) isn't worth releasing. I did read an interview with Michael Anthony recently and he said that VH had almost finished an album with David Lee Roth before they split again that will never see the light of day. He also went on to say he liberate the masters and took them home. |

Now, he must have about 10 worth material. He´s a prolific musician. In September 2001 DL Roth recorded 3 songs with them and according to Dave "they were among the best songs ever recorded by them". When Gary Cherone left the band, he had already recorded an album that was never released. I´m a huge fan of Van Halen, and i think that it's a waste of talent the situation they´re living!! It´s the same with Queen. They must have recorded many songs that were never released. Take care |

Well, Greg have indicated, in the Q&A section at QOL, that there are some never before heard songs that are great...take a look at the section over there. Greg is not the most accurate person, but i guess he knows what he's talking about. Anyway, this is old news... |

All the well-intentioned speculation in the world won't make songs exist that don't. The truth of the matter is that only a handful of people know what really exists and what doesn't, and only three people can get whatever does exist released. In the end, we won't know what's there until it either gets released or someone who knows tells us, and then that will either be released in time or it won't. Endless discussions about "well, logically this is probably there and wouldn't it be likely that this and this is also there, therefore they should be able to do this this and that with it and release this much by then" is all just speculation of speculation on top of more speculation. As for Greg Brooks, I wouldn't trust his word any further than I could throw him, which wouldn't be too far. Him saying there's "lots of great songs" doesn't mean there's lots of great songs that can be released as proper songs or finished into proper songs - he may well be referring to great and interesting outtake material for the box sets, much like the material included in the Freddie box: a lot of work-in-progress demos, a lot of early takes and various mixes of tracks we already know. I can't help but think that anyone expecting the vaults to produce a new album of 12 polished, finished and *good* tracks with Freddie singing the lead on all of them, a la "Made in Heaven", is setting himself up to be disappointed. I would dearly love to be proven wrong, and sincerely hope to be, but I just don't think its going to happen. |

Flash Gordon, since only he can find the golden grail, knows for sure what's in the vaults, so that makes it four people who know. Cheers!!! |

Greg Brooks said that some songs in the vaults, if reworked, can easily be nº1 on the charts on this decade! Don't you think this is dam serious. If not, or the guy is crazy or totaly irresponsable! |

"What's in the vaults of queen??" John Deacon. |

re. Bobby_brown's comments: Just repeating what Ed said in an old Guitar Magazine article (it was a special all VH issue). Of course Ed's had something like 15 operations on his tongue, so maybe he was just really hard to understand! P.S. how do you quote somebody's comments on this site?! Am I just missing a button or something? |

There are extremes in both directions; Bob Dylan could fill a warehouse with cd's containing unreleased tracks, whereas for instance JJ Cale has very little unreleased material. |

Maybe someone has made this point before, but if there were any songs, any good songs, that had Freddie vocals in the vault, wouldn't they have used them for MIH, rather than re-doing stuff from Mr. Bad Guy, Freddies solo album? That doesn't mean they wouldn't have kept some stuff for the future, but it just seems like their state of mind (back in '93-94-95) may have been "Queen is over, let's get this stuff out there". Of course, only Brian, Roger and John, plus possibly Jim Beach, really know for sure. Hopefully we'll find out...someday. |

Knowing how queen albums i would highly suspect they would like songs to blend and follow a distinctive theme a la made in heaven. |

Touching on the subject of Van Halen, I wish they could pull it together and come back with a kick ass CD. As far as any band (The Beatles, Queen, etc.), I'm getting tired of the "newly discovered songs" bullshit. These guys know what they recorded and what they didn't. So, to keep the money coming in and their name out there, they finish "newly discovered" music and release it. Why they never released the fast version on WWRY I'll never know. Although I may sound negative, I will certainly buy what comes out in a second. |
Mr Faron Hyte 04.05.2006 10:30 |
In fairness to the guys, I genuinely believe that prior to hiring Greg Brooks to root around in their vaults (like a fat hairy badger), they didn't have a good grasp of what they had "vaulted" and what they didn't. Based on a lot of interviews and comments, and Brian's website postings over the last few years, I really get the impression that they didn't keep good records at the time and that the guys have really just forgotten a lot of stuff over time. I'm sure we all know of instances where Brian or Roger has made a comment about their own back catalog that we, as fans, knew was mistaken or flat out wrong. This is MY speculation, but my guess has always been that, at the time they were doing MIH, they used material they remembered from then-recent years and could easily access, but almost certainly didn't do a thorough search of all the tapes they have, combing them for usable stuff. Almost all of the "old" material they used for MIH was recorded within the ten years prior to the '93-'94 period when they started working on the album, which could well be an indication of about how far back they could remember with certainly as to what was lying around, and of that "old" material, there are really only two tracks that hadn't already seen some kind of release. I just don't think, at that time, they knew what they had and didn't have (beyond the fairly obvious). |

BOBBY BROWN WROTE- I´m a huge fan of Van Halen, and i think that it's a waste of talent the situation they´re living!! The reason they're not doing anything is because of Eddie. I know he had cancer but I think he's o.k. now.Eddie Van Halen has some strange quirks about him, a lot of people cant figure him out. |
kohuept 04.05.2006 13:34 |
I thought one of the major issues was that they recorded over many of the earlier would-be outtakes because the tape was so expensive. |

Yep. I'd rather be the Paul-Gilbert-after-28-beers that I am, and be a reasonable person, than be as good as Eddie Van Halen and be a prig. Of course, I don't know him so I won't pass judgement. :D |

A couple of years after the album came out they hired Mr. Brooks and he found stuff that they either forgot about or didn't know existed. So no, they wouldn't have necessarily used it on Made in Heaven if they didn't know about it. |
john bodega 11.05.2006 11:59 |
Aye. That's 20 years of doodling around in various forms, I should think it'd be terribly easy for them to not know everything that the other members recorded. |
