Let's compare: Guitar choirs vs one guitar Drums + Timpani vs just drums Intro + Ballad + Opera + Rock + Reprise vs Ballad + Rock + Reprise Ballad section with angelical harmonies vs Ballad section without harmonies Reprise section with brilliant vocal harmonies vs Reprise without vocal harmonies Reprise with astonishing guitar harmonies vs Reprise without guitar harmonies Rock section with double-tracked vocals hitting the high notes vs Rock section with single-tracked voice not hitting the high notes Wonderful intro vs not having intro "Shivers down my spine" guitar effect vs nothing Seems quite obvious to me :) |

I love both, but I would choose studio.... Sebastian has pointed out really most/all of the reasons why it is better. When it's live you have they're real voices no computerized stuff on them. Plus the audience joining in is wonderful. For me it has to be, studio. |
All I Hear Is Radio Gaga 02.05.2006 09:59 |
I of course LOVe the studio version but they do an AMAZING rendition of it live so therefore...I can't choose... Cheers |

This question seems a little... you know. We all know the studio recording sounds way better than any live performance of the song. |
FreMe 02.05.2006 10:54 |
I always perfered studio.... In any song. They never really impressed me live.. |
kohuept 02.05.2006 11:06 |
Studio - plain and simple. Sebastian has all of the reasons except that Brian DID do a bit of the shiver thing live. It, of course, does not compair to the studio version, but it is there - sometimes. |

There are some songs that may sound equally respectable live. Sometimes a simpler arrangement works better (although not in the case of Bo Rhap imo). For instance, Hammer To Fall live is extraordinary, even if Fred doesn't hit the high notes, even if backing vocals aren't double-tracked, even if there's not a harmony of Brian's making chordal backing during the bridge. But the speed is better, the solo is better, and the drums (Magic Tour) sound much better than the shitty studio version. Same goes for Love Of My Life: the studio version is beautiful with piano, guitars, bass and the angelical choirs. Live version takes the song from another angle: simple, gentle, acoustic + voice + audience. It's not better, not worse, just different. And each one's got their one favourite among them. Yet there are some tracks that, imo, need to be very layered. 'Somebody To Love', for me, needs to feature scores of voices together in order to be as majestic as it is. That's why I prefer the studio version a thousand times: it's 40+ voices vs 3. Or Bicycle Race... while Staying Power otoh is better live for me: even if there aren't horns, both John and Brian have more guitar parts than in the album, plus the three-voiced lines are "bigger" when being sung by Fred+Rog+Bri instead of Fred+Fred+Fred (in that case). |

I say live because i think almost every Queensong is live better tah in the studio!!! |
Nathan 02.05.2006 11:28 |
I love both, but if I had to choose then it would have to be the studio version. Don't get me wrong, I love the many live versions, but the studio version has an eerie feeling to it. |
john bodega 02.05.2006 12:16 |
The studio version doesn't have fireworks when the rough bit starts. I'd probably take a good live version, mostly because I appreciate the studio one for so many different reasons. |
brENsKi 02.05.2006 13:26 |
single malt ...or tesco's blended? thorntons continental...or dairy milk chocolates? maserati spyder...or austin allegro? studio...or live? i don't understand how anyone could choose live...this is in essence...removing ALL of what Freddie intended Bo Rhap to be about...the bell's and whistles, the finesse, the kitchen sink.... live it's a good end-of-show rock song...studio it's the classic it always will be |

I prefer live Bohemian Rhapsody because its played faster than the studio version and all of the crowd are singing along to it. |

Live for me. Nothing like seeing the dry ice come out after the operatic section. |

I think live songs are great!! Queen are so gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood live!! Of course i love the studio stuff but i think it's nice to hear the crowd and the band adding little extra bits and interacting with the crowd, plus you can imagine you were there with them! I can't choose between live or studio...but some songs don't sound that well live and some sound better live... |
AspiringPhilosophe 02.05.2006 18:10 |
Definately the studio...but the live version is still good because Queen is one of those rare bands that still sounds great live. You know, like you go to those concerts and the person you're listening to doesn't sound anywhere near what they do on the CD's. I mean, a certain amount of difference is understandable, technology can do so much now. But when they edit it so much that it isn't even recognizable as the person anymore..... Anyway, Studio Version. I actually get goosbumps when I listen to it! |
skiqueen 02.05.2006 20:17 |
live......its captures the pain n torture, freddies voice grew stronger over time and it really has that edge to it....studio is good too, but i like live better |
The prophet's song 03.05.2006 01:52 |
definatley studio. you can't get the magnifico layered effect on stage! |
DeeEmm 03.05.2006 04:11 |
Personally, I think every single Queen song is about x300 better when live. Well, most anyway...it just have more emotion. Look at Crazy Little Thing Called Love, the studio version is ho-hum and quiet and monotonous (yeah, effect I know, but still) while live, it's an insane, twice-as-long, crazy guitar soloed piece of art. Not to mention the audience shouting READY FREDDIE! |
Westy 03.05.2006 06:31 |
i love live versions more than studio ones, because of that great energy!!!! ;) |
