who would you say is the better song writer? It really is tough to say, because these two wrote some of queen's best hits and songs just to name a few from each: Brian: '39 Fat Bottomed Girls We Will Rock You I Want It All Tie Your Mother Down Who Wants To live Forever We Will Rock You Keep Yourself Alive White Queen The Show Must Go On Sail Away Sweet Sister Hammer to Fall Save Me Freddie: Bohemian Rhapsody Killer Queen Love of My Life Somebody To Love Crazy Little Thing Called Love Play The Game Bicycle Race Don't Stop Me Now We Are The Champions Seven Seas Of Rhye Under Pressure these songs are just some of the great ones they each wrote, but who do you guys think were more talented at song writing? |
FreMe 29.04.2006 13:36 |
I think Freddie was... i like most of his songs a little better, and he had more hits... |

I think they're equally good songwriters. |

My favourite tracks tend to be Brian's (which doesn't mean he was better). Of course Fred was more advanced in musical things like modulations and complex structures and rhythms, which doesn't make him better either. They were both brill, and a good team whenever they collaborated. |

I like/love more of Freddie's songs than Brian's, but the songs of Brian that I love, I LOVE. I guess that's my way of saying I also think they're equal. |

I find that Brians writing is more emotional but thats just me. |

Under Pressure is hardly a song written by Freddie Mercury though... |

Freddie Mercury's songs are much more original. |
Asterik 29.04.2006 17:42 |
I think Freddie was more repsonsible for the Queen sound with his songs, e.g multi-tracked harmonies etc. and probably wrote the greatest songs such as Bo Rhap, MOTB and POTU but May was far more consistent than Fred, particularly in the later years when Mercury's songwriting went downhill and Queen's sound was more pop than rock. Brian had a very important role in the eighties, keeping them weighted in rock and he did this very well with Hammer To Fall, I Want it All etc. he kept hitting the mark when others wrote synth based filler. Lyrically, Brian was far superior and his songs worked better live because they were heavier. Fred's attention to detail and knack for seamless signature transitions made him the more listenable and varied though. |
rosedewitt 29.04.2006 17:47 |
freddie was more talented, - his songs are mor emotional and with more "soul" i would say.... |

Another Roger (re) wrote: Under Pressure is hardly a song written by Freddie Mercury though...Roger Taylor has been quoted as saying the song is Freddie's and somewhat David.... and the "rest of us just kind of followed what they were doing" ...Modern Drummer Magazine March/April 1994. David Bowie in a 1995 issue of Rolling Stone said "that collaberation happened because we (Queen and I) happened to be in the same place at the same time and Freddie had some songs he thought were missing that extra something and thought that maybe I could add some texture." Giving this, I'd call "Pressure" Freddie's. |
Sebastian 30.04.2006 00:20 |
Indeed UP's mostly Freddie's, although they all contributed, but similarly they all contributed to Eleanor Rigby and still the song is Paul's. I don't think the others wrote synth-based fillers, but that's a matter of opinion. Fred was a strong songwriter always, his last compositions were breath-taking just as much as his first imo. |
mike hunt 30.04.2006 00:30 |
It's impossible to say who was a better songwriter because they wrote different styles of music. Freddie was my personal fav, I find him to be more creative and original in his songs. |

Man- I'm usually not a person for comparing, and this would be a close call, but I'm gonna have to go with Brian on this one...but like I said-VERY CLOSE CALL!!! |
deleted user 30.04.2006 02:26 |
Freddie was better at writing ballads and emotional songs and Brian was better at writing hard rock songs so its a tough call, they're both great! |
liam 30.04.2006 03:17 |
some of queens best heavy stuff was freddies though - let me entertain you, death on two legs, rock part of bohemion and march of the black queen, liar, seven seas of rhye and the heavy parts of mustapha. i think freddie was supior to brian both musically and lyricaly, all i say is listen to bohemion rhapsody, march of the black queen and somebody to love - did brian really write anything nearly as talented and original. thats my opinion of course. |
FreMe 30.04.2006 03:19 |
i agree. i still perfer all of their songs over any crap, written today! |
mike hunt 30.04.2006 04:58 |
The reason I say freddie is for those originality reasons. No one wrote songs like leroy brown or killer queen. These sounds were never created before, brian is a great songwriter but as great as tie your mother down is, it was done before by other hard rock bands. Listen to the originality in barcelona, no one ever did anything so original. by the way, I think roger taylor was the least original songwriter in queen. |
Sebastian 30.04.2006 09:41 |
I think the four of them were highly original. Not every drummer is able to compose such different songs like Modern Times and Days Of Our Lives, or a hard-rock song in 3/4. As far as Bo Rhap, Black Queen or Bicycle Race are concerned, yes, they were outside Brian's expertise in what concerns harmony, structure and rhythmic tricks. But it doesn't mean Fred's better. For the same extent we can say that '39 or Long Away are outside Fred's expertise in that sort of music, and it doesn't mean Brian's better. Regarding "not done before" stuff, I don't know any rock guitarist who arranged and recorded a jazz band all by himself, composed a vocal canon, wrote a Jap-like ballad and a procession. |

For me it's impossible to answer that |

Freddie was the strongest songwriter up to 'A Day At The Races', from then on I think it was Brian. |
brian bulsara 30.04.2006 12:05 |
well roger mainly wrote "under pressure" just pointing that out but i do think that they all had great songs theres no way to messure i guess it depends on the person who writes this my two favorite songs are "good company" by brian and the other is "millionair waltz" by freddie and i dont think i could ever choose.. Thank You, Brian Bulsara |

Brian is, in my opinion, the best songwriter in Queen. |
Sebastian 30.04.2006 13:10 |
Roger didn't write Under Pressure. He liked it a lot and had some input in the production along with Freddie, Mack and David Bowie, but he didn't compose it. The song is chiefly Freddie's. And Show is mainly Brian's although 90% of the chords are by Roger and John. |

brian bulsara wrote: well roger mainly wrote "under pressure"Wrong, Mainly Freddie's.... Where do people come up with this shit? Other popular misconceptions: Innuendo is Freddie's....not Roger's TATDOOL is Roger's.......not Freddie's TSMGO is John/Roger Chords.... first verse Fred/Brian together.... rest of lyrics Brian. Line of "I'll face it with a grin, I'm never giving in" is Fred's according to Freestone...Brian presented Fred with the line "My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies..etc..etc.." Freestone said Fred carried that piece of paper around for days of Brian's lyrics... Then added the "I'll face it with a grin" line... that was the only change made to Brian's lyrics... Freestone added that Freddie commonly "took over" the songs of the others when presented (but always made fast frantic changes...could completely change a song in 5 minutes according to those close)...with TSMGO Fred commented to Phoebe and Jim "Brian has handed me his best work ever to look over, and I don't feel good enough to do a damn thing about it." Mad props to Brian for the arrangement and 90% of the lyrics for TSMGO... unreal song... And Fred..for singing it like he did... months away from death (standing ovation) |
