i think there's a few very naive people round here. licensing songs isn't the band's decision - ok so the band get roayalties every time a song is covered...used in ads etc...but the record company will use it where they want to. only if a band owns "sole publishing rights" do they get final veto on use of their songs. and anyhow - all this "selling the queen soul to the devil" attitude - i find it a little too altruistic for this modern age....aren't Bir and Rog allowed to "boost their pension funds"? ffs- the music bus will nto want to know queen before too long...so they have every right to make hay will the sun shines |

While in MOST CASES it isn't the band but the management that decides, every band that has grown BIG does decide for themselves; you see, it all depends on how good the contract is. The bigger your band, the better your contract. Usually, you have to choose between more royalties or keeping full rights to your songs. Big bands don't have to choose, because they'll go to someone else if the record company isn't willing to give them what they want. |

..and there was Brian saying in a very recent interview that they turn down a lot of requests from artists who want to cover Queen material. What on earth will be the next attempt to shred any dignity from the original band? I suppose the line will be dragged out that Freddie was a huge fan of the Crazy Frog, or that he always wanted to be remembered as a ring tone, or that John Deacon approves of it, or that when Brian said "not to our song" he was misquoted by the Crazy Frog. You know, I don't mind the Q+PR thing, but I'm just about ready to throw anything by Queen that doesn't include Freddie into the bloody bin |

..he didn't specify who they've turned down obviously, but whoever they are they'd hardly do worse damage to the Queen name than a Crazy Frog cover version. It was in an interview prior to the US tour. |

I've sent my post to Brian May. Not expecting a response. I felt a little bad about doing so until Bohemian Rhapsody came onto the radio this afternoon. Why do this to a Freddie composition? Go and licence one of May or Taylor's songs if you really need the cash, but have a little respect for Freddie. I used to think the clip for Electric6(?)'s version of "Radio Ga Ga" was in poor taste, showing that guy dancing on Freddie's grave, but perhaps it was a statement about what's left of Queen. I really never thought it could get this bad. |
