Anyone else agree that Freddie wrote some of the saddest songs in the Queen catalogue? It's weird though, when I'm rocking out to Somebody to Love it's not until when I listen to the meaning of the song that it sounds like Freddie was really lonely. It seems that at some point in most of his songs they are about people leaving him, like Nevermore, You Take My Breathe Away, Love of My Life etc. The beginning and ending of Bohemian Rhapsody are really sad too. Don't get me wrong, I love Freddie as a musician and I love all his songs to death, but it seems that some of his best songs have a really dark meaning to them. |

Freddie's songs are more personal, not saying the others aren't. If I had to pick one who didn't really have many personal songs I would pick Roger. He has some but not too many, like Freddie and Brian. John.... well, I guess his popular songs are kinda personal. |

Yeah, I usually listen to the George Michael version when I rock out because Freddie's version is so much lonlier when you really listen to it. You can really hear his emotion in it if you listen close. |

Er.. I think Brian has written some of the most personal songs... don't know why, though... :S |

I really didn't think most of Bri's songs scream "personal!". True, he had Too Much Love Will kill you- quite personal, but usually I find his songs to have hidden meanings, unlike the others, whos meanings were quite blundt. Take '39 for example, or Dragon Attack (lol), or even Now I'm Here, they're all Bri's, and the meanings aren't directly in the lyrics. I would pick Freddie to have the most personal songs. Ex: Somebody to Love, Death on Two Legs, and Who Wants to Live Forever?. PS I heard that Driven By You was written by Bri for a Ford commercial??? Is this true? |
sandssavvy 19.04.2006 18:42 |
Who Wants to Live forever was by Brian... However, I agree that Freddie's were probably more emotional than the others. Somebody to Love, Funny How Love Is, Dear Friends, Death on Two Legs, You Take My Breath Away, Jealousy, My Melancholy Blues, Play the Game, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Life is Real, It's a Hard Life, One Year of Love, and Pain is so Close to Pleasure (John and Freddie), The Miracle, Show Must Go On, and Bijou are all very emotion filled songs. Don’t forget all the emotional songs that were on his solo albums, too. Freddie actually said once in an interview that most of his songs could be put under the label of emotion. |

Dear songs is Brian's? Sorry I was sure I got at least one wrong. |

I wouldn't consider crazy little thing called love emotional. Have you seen the video? lol |

Freddie's life was like one of his quotes: Either very happy or very sad. He was a man of extremes. Hot and cold. Good and bad. Sad and happy. But I think Freddie did live a very sad life ultimately. He never got to enjoy his life, and grow to a ripe old age. And it was entirely his fault. |
Sherwood Forest 19.04.2006 19:34 |
freddie songs are more personal, they come from his heart and how he feels. And if you look at his life as a whole it wasnt exactly that happy |

Darling, I think that's how he spent most of his time! I'd say there were a lot of sad times in his life, but I'm pretty sure he enjoyed life and lived it to its fullest. There are a few times he's been quoted saying that. He also said he never wanted to grow old, he thought it would be boring. lol.. ahh Freddie.. |

Not to say that Freddie's weren't, but in the overall scheme of things, I'd have to say that Brian wrote the most poignant and meaningful songs. |
Sebastian 19.04.2006 21:03 |
I think Brian's songs were the most melancholic, lyrically: White Queen, All Dead, Save Me, Dear Friends, Nothin' But Blue. He was quite nostalgic (not that Fred wasn't). Btw Too Much Love's lyrics aren't May's. |

As sad as the book Mercury and Me is, that's on of the reasons I read the exerpt from it. |

This thread is making me sad...I love Freddie ! |

Okay - so am I the only one at QZ who thinks that "My Melancholy Blues" is meant to be tongue-in-cheek? |

I would say that's more sexual than emotional.... beautifulsoup, I agree. And why has nobody mentioned Teo Torriatte in all this? I think it's one of Brian's most beautiful songs. |
rosedewitt 20.04.2006 06:09 |
many of freddies songs are really sad i think, and maybe he was really a tragic person and he wrote that songs in his sentimental moments. but i also think he enjoyed life very much and really "lived it to the fullest", i'm sure he didn't miss anything, - except of a own family. |

Hmm, I think that they could all write emotioal songs. But if you compare Freddie and Brian, I think that Brian's songs are more obvious emotional, ex Sail away sweet sister, Teo Toriatte, Save me, WHo want to live forever, No-one but you etc etc. But Freddie's song are to me often so powerful and beautiful that you don't think what it's about, it's just sheer power... It's a bit hard to explain... But I mean like, in Somebody to love, when I first heard it I thought it was a good song, but so much more. Then I listened to it more, and it has got all these layers, with the chorus, and the wonderful lyrics, that you I didn't really relate to the first time I heard it, but now I think is genious. Then if you look at Save me, and I cried the first time I heard that, same with No'one but you, Who wants to live forever. They're more obviouus beautiful... I don't know if anyone got that... :) |

Bijou is Freddie's. |

The Show Must Go On is Brian's best emotional song I must say! "Inside the dawn is breaking but inside in the dark I'm aching to be free" " Whatever happens I leave it all to chance, another heartache, another failed romance" !!!!!THAT SONG IS THE BEST!!!!! |
