I've been thinking about learning to play the Guitar, and after watching Brian Live(he's amazing!),I am totally inspired and ready to learn. But I know almost nothing about playing yet. Can anyone give me any tips? Which type to purchase first, etc.? |

Start off with classical guitar then work your way up. |

Thank you, dear. I'm writing that down. Is it fairly easy to learn? I've played Flute for almost 20 years so I should have the finger dexterity... |

Buy an acousic first before eletric! Unless you cant wait and really want to rock out, then buy an eletric. |

Well, when i first started to learn i started off with classical guitar because its simple. Then i worked my way up to more complex guitars. Once you get on with the electric guitar i recommend you put huge speakers up against the neighbours wall and blast out for a few hours. |

Just get some cheap guitar that stays in tune, and then learn all the chords... then scales... then your set. Buy a book which shows you the chords and scales. Then buy a Fender Strat or a Gibson Les Paul, or a PRS, or whatever fits your fancy. |

12 bar blues progression is a good thing to learn early on too. |

I wouldn't recommend starting with classical guitar - it's probably unnecessary or superfluous, especially if you want to play like Brian. Both the guitar itself and the technique are completely different from acoustic guitar, let alone electric guitar. I also recommend that rather than learning through a book, you should learn through an instructor. Learning by yourself just opens doors to bad habits that can be otherwise quickly corrected or avoided by having an instructor. Contrary to what someone above said, do not get a Gibson Les Paul unless you're absolutely sure you want to play one. They start at around two grand. Fenders, Squiers, or cheap acoustic guitars are all great starter guitars. The Fender is the most expensive, but if you get one, though, you'll have something that will suffice for as long and far as your guitar playing career may last. (Heck, I'm sure I could say the same thing about a Squier too.) Either way, you could always mess around with the electronics later in your career, and make a tin can sound just fine. |

I started playing last year, and people were telling me I should buy an acoustic first and then work my way up to electric. But, being the impatient and stubborn person that I can be, I went out and bought an electric. It didn't really make a difference to me which one I learned first. I play both electric and acoustic on a regular basis now. |

I suppose the higher action would give sort of a "donut effect (in reference to baseball batting)," but that's pretty much the only advantage. They are really two different instruments. |

It's like buying a car... it just depends on what you get. Probably could get a decent guitar for under 200. A guitar book would be maybe around 20 bucks. Guitar stores will have used stuff cheaper... just gotta look around. |
ANAGRAMER 14.04.2006 12:25 |
Best bet is to go straight to electric - if that's the sound you want to make electric guitars (properly set-up) are usually fine for beginners Why not get a RS!! |

Well, I started with an acoustic, and I didn't really want to learn, I mean from teachers, so I used a computer program called GuitarPro, it's quite easy to use, and this is the way I learned a lot of Queen songs, as Tie Your Mother Down wich is preatty difficult... So download the program, and try! Good luck ;-) |
