Ugh... "R&B"'d WWRY??? Go to hell! That song worked (and still works) because of it's simplicity. Brian May used a beat that's probably been handed down since we were in the freakin' caves - it works because it's absolutely instinctual and timeless. Keep your R&B *crap* off this music, I say. The Idol people are numpties if they think a Queen song should 'be okay' in such an abbreviated format. I actually feel sorry for the contestants. They're being screwed in the arse big-time. |

Seriously, what is the point of singing a minute and a half of BoRhap? It's a waste. They'd be better just not doing it at all. There was a show called 'Queen Rocks' around a year ago on ITV, which sucked. G4 sang BoRhap. I say sang, I mean ruined. There was two minutes of it tops, and that sucked. |
billycat 11.04.2006 09:46 |
I admit this isn't going to be one of Queens highlight moments of their career but believe it or not it is helping keep the music alive and quite possibly bringing it to a newer audience who will eventually seek out the original stuff. I would recommend just simply avoiding it if you have a problem with the songs being cut. American Idol always does that so they can fit all the performers into one hour. Queen will be no exception to this. Also if you're automatically gonna hate anything that just isn't Freddie Mercury then you should perhaps avoid this like the plague. I guarantee you he's not going to be there in person and no one is going to sound just like him. I don't see how this is going to ruin the Queen name or disgrace their history in any way since the original music is still always going to be what it is. Queen songs have already been featured on AI quite a few times so it's cool that this time they will get more of a special treatment from Brian and Rog themselves. Queen fans should be happy that their favorite band is getting so much more exposure than they have had in years and on one of the biggest tv shows in the US. American Idol is far from one of my favorite shows and I haven't watched hardly anything at all from this season but I will be tuning in tonight and tomorrow. As a Queen fan for 25 years I'm happy to see them (or at least Brian and Roger...and the music) in the spotlight again. ...now please continue with the petty bickering and concerns that Queen are doing some great injustice to themselves and the world by simply getting the music out there once again. |

(Chris Daughtry, Innuendo: "It's a relatively unknown song. It just had a mixture of a dark feel and a positive message. And I just found out they've never performed this live.") This guy's obviously never seen the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. My only problem is, with something like this, you're taking young guys and girls with little or no knowledge of the legacy of bands such as Queen, and giving them some of the best Queen songs out there just to tear to bits (Innuendo, a six-minute song, cut down to 1:30, how the fuck are they gonna be able to make that sound good? That's like making it Led Zeppelin night and someone trying to sing Stairway To Heaven or Kashmir) Believe me, I don't want to admit it, but I will: this will be the worst thing Queen has ever done. It will be worse than the Pepsi commercial. It will be worse than WATC with Robbie Williams. It will be worse than G4's Bohemian Rhapsody. Simply put, it will be worse than anything that Brian and Roger have ever done (or allowed to be done) in their lives. Don't get me wrong. I am NOT, in any way, shape, or form, saying that Queen has sold out, or 'gone soft' or anything like that. This will not tarnish the legacy of Queen, it will just put a dent in their image. On the contrary, though, as it will only be a very small dent. So don't fret, loyal Queen fans. Nothing will be lost, except maybe our minds. :p I'm tempted to watch it tonight. I know I shouldn't, but something tells me I should. Please, somebody talk me down lol |

Too many of you folks are living in fear. We're about to hear 8 pretty good singers give their interpretation of Queen's material. They are smart enough to know that they shouldn't try to imitate Freddie. And I suspect the audience will end up with a much bigger appreciation for Queen's music. Those of us on Queenzone will probably hate maybe two of the eight interpretations/performances. But there will most likely be extensive disagreement over which songs were well or poorly performed. It will be really interesting tonight to hear the input from the judges. Randy has said on several occasions that Freddie was great and anyone trying to sound like him would be making a major mistake. Simon likes Queen's music and will absolutely crucify any of the contestants who, in his opinion, dishonor it. Yep, it's gonna be a fun night. In my humble but most accurate opinion, the real winner tonight will be Queen. :) |
Mr Faron Hyte 11.04.2006 15:19 |
This show was literally the number one most watched show in the United States last week. It has an average viewership of like 30 million people. Its a huge boost to them to be on this show and it will put them in front of a new audience, which can not be a bad thing, whether you like the show or not. Hold your nose if you have to. The CD is a pretty cobbled-together duff job. Practically no booklet to speak of, the tracks sound like they were mixed at different volume levels, and the two live tracks aren't even faded in - they just start abruptly in the middle of audience noise. And the title font sucks. Two photos of the band on the inside, the 'blue' one from "Innuendo" and the one used on the "Radio Ga Ga" 7 inch sleeve, and one poorly chosen shot of Q+PR, with Brian looking away from the camera. I could have put together a better produced package than that. And go ahead and hit me over the head with a tack hammer. I don't care. |
Freddie_Jr. 11.04.2006 15:23 |
that setlist isn't good. It's all of the same shit that's been played on radio etc. over and over again, and that's all the bulk of America is ever going to hear, Queen misrepresented again >.< Don't get me wrong I like there hits, but people judge Queen because they say they don't like We Are the Champions or stuff like that, they don't know the essence of Queen. |

A sackful of suds indeed. Perhaps watching the "Ned Beatty scene" from Deliverance during that part of AI will be easier to endure. Hicks will have some fun with "Crazy Little Thing" (the song, not me) though, and the exuberance of the song will be expressed via his legendary interpretive dance. I like this guy and his enthusiasm. I imagine "Who Wants to Live Forever" could be reminiscent of fingernails on a chalkboard, although she does have a good voice, and I'd prefer it if she proves me wrong. I wonder what Mandisa would have done? Now SHE would have made it interesting. I'm guessing that the guys in the band had some fun with the AI thing, even if they initially went at gunpoint. |

Dear Friends wrote: Further proof that Queen without Freddie isn't Queen at all. Freddie would have NEVER allowed something like this to be done. For shame Brian and Roger.... for shame...Bullshit. Freddie was an artist, but a very business-savy one who loved fame, money, adulation, and popularity. Freddie would have been all over this American Idol appearance - and possibly one or two of the contestants. How many times were Queen on Top of the Pops, which is as crappy a commercial pop show as any other? People need to stop trying to turn Freddie into something he wasn't, instead of appreciating what he was, which was someone with an appreciation of high class and low class, the elite and the masses. He liked to slum it up just as much as he liked to class it up. |

•Ace Young, We Will Rock You: "I urbanized the verses a little, just by riding on (the notes). I put a little R&B soul on it. When we were done, they said, 'That sounds like a record.' " [I have no idea what Ace is talking about here.] --------------- •Bucky Covington, Fat Bottomed Girls: "Yes, we all love the fat-bottomed girls." [We won't have to worry about the lyrics offending anyone, because Bucky doesn't enunciate.] --------------- •Chris Daughtry, Innuendo: "It's a relatively unknown song. It just had a mixture of a dark feel and a positive message. And I just found out they've never performed this live." [Chris has had too much of the "dark feel" in his song choices so far.] --------------- •Elliott Yamin, Somebody to Love: "I was drawn to the passionate emotion of the song. I heard a lot of soul in it." [Elliott picked the best song for a singing competition. He better have good backup singers for this.] --------------- •Katharine McPhee, Who Wants to Live Forever: "How could (this) not be fun? We're working with so many different legends." [Oh, no! She stole Mandisa's song. This is too mature and serious for her. She should have done I Want To Break Free.] --------------- •Kellie Pickler, Bohemian Rhapsody: "We only have 1 minute and 30 seconds, and the song is really long. Having to cut so many pieces is really hard to memorize, because I'm not singing the song as it's originally played." [This girl is being set up by the producers. It's like the moment when everyone gasps at the circus.] --------------- •Paris Bennett, The Show Must Go On: "Being with the band was a big experience to me, never being with a rock band before. I was able to pick a song that fits me, that's still rocky." [I would never include this song in a singing competition.] --------------- •Taylor Hicks, Crazy Little Thing Called Love: "You listen to a Queen song, it's really melodic and very powerful, and the dynamics (are) really cool." [I think Taylor will have fun with it, but I don't think it is going to help him in this competition.] |
mystic_rhythms 11.04.2006 19:15 |
I understand. I think the whole reason I went off the deep end in the first place was because I really don't care for American Idol. It's cool and all that Queen is getting more recognition and publicity, both good and bad (any publicity is good publicity) I guess it's just my AI bias. I don't care for it, and look at where the winners have gone. The only one who's done a lot with her career was Kelly Clarkson, and she won the 1st AI. Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, and even Carrie Underwood have not reached anywhere that she has gone yet. So it's easy to forget who won American Idol, because there will be a new American Idol by next year. It's better to not pay attention than to forget everything you know. You know what I mean? |
billycat 11.04.2006 19:29 |
I think one of the funniest American Idol things was William Hung. He was so awkwardly bad that he was entertaining to watch and he actually ended up getting a record deal of his own and I think I heard he actually sold more copies than the winner of that season did. link |
rockyracoon 11.04.2006 20:03 |

I actually captured the whole thing on dvd.... picture perfect quality, the interaction with the band was the best part, loved the Queen bits. I thought Bucky and Ace sucked ass. I'd like to suck Katherine or Kellie's ass. |

Ace should have listened to Paul Rodgers singing 'We Will Rock You' Paul throws in the ad lib "You can't stop the rock" Ace proved that you can stop the rock. Any of the Idol contestants could have found more suitable Queen material if they had been more familiar with Queen's catalogue. |

I had ice cream just before the show. That settled my nerves. Bucky - Fat Bottomed Girls: Well, I was surprised that you really could hear the words to that song. He turned it into southern rock which I didn't like. I thought Roger's comment of, "He really likes to perform" was very diplomatic. Ace - We Will Rock You: My fav. part was seeing Brian say, "I'm not re-arranging my song" [sic]. That was great. The worst part was the missing guitar solo - that is what We Will Rock You is all about. Kellie - Bo. Rhap.: She did a good job. I think she hit all the notes and she tried to act like a rocker chic the best she could, but I think it came off as less rock and more drama nerd with the backlighting. Also, unladylike to get down on her knees and bounce - that really didn't fit the song and even if it had, it is really more of a stage antic for a male rocker (like he is getting down on his knees to beg or have a semi-tantrum). Brian: "We love you Kellie." Taylor - Crazy Little Thing Called Love: The mic stand kick was embarassing but the rest of the song was OK. He sang all the right notes at least. He just comes off as too goofy though. You need sex in rock and he doesn't have it. Katherine - Who Wants To Live Forever: She was flat on the high notes. Otherwise it could have been the best of the night. The ending of the song notes were her own creation and it ended the song badly. They tried to make it more dramatic with the lighting, but she was off on her notes. So, sorry Mr Jingles. I would have liked to have seen her do well on that song. Chris - Innuendo: What is it that he is doing with his voice? He sounds like one of those monks that can sing two notes at the same time. I don't like it at all. It sounds scary. Also, no sex to him. Just scary, serious, I'm going to throw up right now on the stage-type singing. I think he might be stuck in the 90's. He really missed his opportunity to do something more delicate tonight to show his other side but he missed out. Roger and Brian had positive things to say about his talent. Elliott - Somebody to Love: Well, he hit all his notes and that was good, however, he did not go for the final high note and run at the end, which would have been a big score for him. He chose the best song (by far) for this type of show. The back up singers did pretty well also. Paris - The Show Must Go On: She hit all her notes, and I think of all the contestants, she stayed the closest to the original version of the song - except for the ending. I didn't like the ending. I also didn't like her weird get-up. It looked sort of bondage-leather-grotesque. She is way too young to dress like that (actually, nobody should dress like that). Tina Turner could have pulled it off maybe but not little Paris. Brian seemed the most enthusiastic about Paris. My Ranking based on the singing: 1. Elliott (excellent) 2. Kellie (very good) 3. Paris (good) 4. Taylor (OK) 5. Chris (not good but better than those below) 6. Ace (just dumb) 7. Bucky (just boring) 8. Katharine (sorry Mr Jingles - I like her but she was flat on her high notes so she can't go into the recording studio unless she fixes that) The Judges: Paula Abdul is not all there. Simon looked like he had a headache and couldn't be bothered. Randy was cool as usual and good at catching pitch problems. Ryan: A class act, as usual. I thought it was great that he said which album each song came from. Also he pointed out that one of their producers in the control room had worked with Queen on the Bo. Rhap. video. Now that was the news of the night for me! Audience: They cheered when it was announced that Taylor would sing Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Other than that I didn't notice much. I'll have to watch the show again. Fantasia was in the audience. She sang a Queen song during her competition 2 years ago but I can't remember whi |

On the whole, pretty dismal. I'm not sure what pretty boy Ace was thinking with "We Will Rock You." Simon hit the nail on the head, It's We Will Rock You, not We Will Rock You gently." He would've been better served singing a pop number or ballad. I predict he will hit the bottom 3 tomorrow night. Bucky doing "Fat Bottomed Girls" was decent enough but something's wrong when you miss hearing Kid Rock's version. Katherine's "Who Wants To Live Forever" could have been the showstopper (as Simon said) but she didn't commit to it. I kept thinking "Just imagine you're Celine Dion and go for it." She didn't. Dumb hick Kellie (hey, that's the image she projects, that's what I'll call her) bored me to tears on "Bohemian Rhapsody." She was so stilted, her "look" was awful....dreadful. I had been looking forward to hearing Chris sing "Innuendo." A risky choice given the fact it's virtually unknown in the US (though a #1 in the UK.) An epic song and he chooses to over-sing it (almost screeching it at times) and then he decides to sing the boring parts of the song. Probably the biggest disappointment. Paris and "The Show Must Go On." I'm sorry, she's far too young to bring across the meaning/emotion of that song. It didn't help with her constantly looking so damn awkward on stage. Really weak ending as well. Elliott did a fairly good job with "Somebody To Love," he has one of the better voices on the show but in my opinion, he wussed out. Notice how he didn't even attempt to hit the high note at the end of the song, completely avoided it. Serviceable. Now I might be in the minority with this but to me, Taylor's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was by far the best overall performance of the night. When I first heard of his choice I thought it was far too safe to sing. I was completely entertained by him tonight. Does he have the best voice? No but neither did John Lennon, it's what you do with what you have that counts. He projected fun and excitement, something the rest of them really lacked. The opposite of Chris's performance, Taylor took me by surprise. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's show as Queen will be performing live and the singers will be doing more Queen (either as a group, individually or they're doing a medley, I'm not sure.) Now I've read several things about Queen being "rude" to Ace on the "American Idol" boards (people there are throwing a hissy fit!) First, when the singers met Queen, it was NOT to re-arrange the songs and get their performances down pat. It was just a rehearsal, that's for the show's musical folk to do, not Queen. My god, they had a show to do themselves plus had to run through songs with seven other people. Ace honestly expected Queen to sit down and re-work the song in a couple of minutes? Not only did that show how green Ace is in the music industry but also his self-important nature to expect someone else to do his bidding not once but twice (doesn't he realize no means no?) However I DO question AI's decision to actually show that footage, it was not needed and only made one of the singers look bad. Brian May is known throughout the industry as one the nicest people around. He is completely humble and gracious and even when he told Ace no, he did it with a laugh. Anyway, the show was a disappointment (except for Taylor) but then again I wasn't expecting much to begin with. |

I watched it and recorded it, then watched it again. Having had time to digest it all, my conclusions are as follows: 1. Brian and Roger were courteous, complimentary, constructive and polished. 2. I liked Simon's comment that Queen produced so many great songs. 3. I thought all the contestants had some strengths, but all of them showed some flaws. It was obvious to me that a lot of the music was very new to them. Fortunately, there were no major disasters. 4. Overall, Simon seemed disappointed that none of the singers were able to do a great job with Queen's material. 5. Paula, trying to always be nice and constructive to the contestants, inadvertently (I hope) insulted some of Queen's work. 6. Conclusion: Paul Rodgers is a star, having demonstrated the ability to do a much better job than any of the surviving eight contestants. And the producers of tonight's show did a great job touting the vocal excellence of Freddie Mercury. It will be interesting to hear what Queen plays tomorrow night. I'm guessing Another One Bites the Dust, Under Pressure, We Are the Champions, none of which we heard tonight. |

PieterMC has offered the American Idol show on the announce board... if any of you need me to burn you a dvd of the Tuesday and Wednesday show, I will be happy to. Tuesday: showed the remaining contestants with Queen, working with Queen, Brian + Roger giving their thoughts on the contestant, then each contestant performing a Queen song. Wednesday: The show is a hour, which is longer than usual, so Queen + PR will probably perform a few songs. Plus we'll see who gets kicked off from Tuesday nights performance. |

It really sucks. AI stands for everything Queen fought against in the 70s. The first few Queen albums are masterpieces. They're fresh, progressive and powerful. When the members of Queen grew up, everybod had to learn to play their instrument, and they were proud of themselves, because their abilities were on the top. AI is the opposite. A few fucking young people who really believe that they can sing. But trust me, they CAN'T. You should support the real musicians who are still out there instead of celebrating this AI crap. |

American Idol is a bit of fun and nothing more. It has nothing to do with "supporting real musicians" or not. That's just over the top hyperbole. You're overwrought, my friend. Relax.
