I'm offically a Queen addict...and I'm proud to admit that...lol... True Story: I was once a sad victim of today's endless beat of bootie music, watered down American Idol pop w/recycled beats, etc...But now, I finally caught the Queen train w/you guy, and I am happy to be a passenger! But I want to start listening to more classic rock! I've heard of Led Zeppelin, Cream, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Eagles (dont know any songs by them) Jimi Hendrix, The Stones (I have mixed feelings about them, heard good and bad stuff)Aerosmith, etc...but I'd like to start listening to more classic rock, etc... I wanted to know what kinda music do you listen to (other than Queen) and why do you like it so much, and how has it effected you, what do you suggest that I listen to? |

I would say if you like a lot of the early Queen stuff you might also like some of the prog rock of that time as well. Particularly the group, Yes. "Fragile" might be the best album to start with. It really is one of my all-time favorite records. Yes did a lot of great vocal harmony stuff and had some really compelling arrangements and performances on record. You also might enjoy (and a very "might" at that) some of the stuff Rush did in the 70's and even early 80's. I went through a period during my teens where I though Rush was one of the best things ever...and while I'm glad I got over that thought, I still think they were a great band. Anything between Fly By Night and Moving Pictures might be a good place to start. Though probably not Hemispheres. For most the singing in Rush is an aquired tastes I really would highly recommend Yes, Fragile though. That's such a great record. If you like it then maybe move on to "The Yes Album". What an amazing group they were. and definitely as someone already mentioned get yourself some Hendrix. Probably "Axis, Bold as Love" or "Are You Experienced" would be a good place to start hope that helps |

I hear you all talking about bands like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and all those good bands, but you're forgetting one of the greatest bands in the land: Rush. *cue Tom Sawyer* Spanning a career of over 30 years, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart have helped revolutionize rock music in the 1970's, with hard-hitting hits such as "Working Man", "Anthem", "Freewill", and "2112". And that's just the 1970's. Geddy's shrieking vocals and mastering of the bass guitar catapulted the band way over the top, along with Alex's ravaging riffs and mesmerizing work, and not to mention Neil's immaculate drum solos (i recommend you listen to them, they are freakin' outrageous!) They are still performing to this day. Their latest concert, R30 (a performance in Germany during their 30th Anniversary Tour) is amazing, and I highly recommend it for anyone who is remotely interested in this awesome Canadian band. So, before you put on Led Zeppelin IV, or rev up your Bad Company vinyl, remember the name: Rush. |
Mr.Jingles 05.04.2006 13:38 |
I never liked Rush that much because the singer sounds like the witch villain from a Disney cartoon. |

Jethro Tull- Aqualung. That was my last purchase. Mott The Hoople- All the Young Dudes. Queen connection and a great album in its own right. Moody Blues. Now there's something deep. In Search of the Lost Chord, or Days of Future Passed. Zeppelin is a safe bet, but I have grown tired of there stuff after about a year of heavy rotation. |

Devo sucks, and this comes from someone who actually loves New Wave. The only New Wave band I can think of that is almost as bad as Devo is Oingo Boingo. |

Just listen to your local classic rock stations...you'll figure out what you like eventually, and you'll get a much broader range of styles than if you were to just ask someone else. Anyway, I like many bands named after places: Asia, Boston, Chicago, Kansas... And as for Rush...the music's good, but the vocalist can get kind of annoying sometimes - like the Coheed and Cambria guy. Actually, they sound exactly the same. But regardless, don't take other people's opinions and assume them as your own. Like I said, just listen to classic rock stations and find what you like. You don't even have to look to the past to find good music, though. |
Lisser 06.04.2006 01:02 |
You're in for a wealth of good music if you are just now getting in to Classic Rock. There is nothing like it. All the suggestions so far in this thread I agree with. My personal favorites are Rush, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Boston, Queen of course, Free, Bad Company, Journey, can I count Elton John. I loves me some Elton. I also like Fleetwood Mac, George Michael, Green Day, Heart, etc. I'm sure I'll think of some others, but those come to the top of my head. |
Gunpowder Gelatine 06.04.2006 01:23 |
I'd just find a classic rock radio station - that's where I got most of my classic rock education! I found a few tracks I liked, figured out the artists behind them and from there you become introduced to a much wider span of bands, some new, some older. But here's some of my favorites, alphabetized courtesy of Itunes! :) AC/DC Aerosmith Alice Cooper Bad Company Beatles Cream David Bowie Elton John Guns N' Roses Iggy & The Stooges Jimi Hendrix Led Zeppelin Pink Floyd Rolling Stones Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers U2 The Who |

Just a general question to everyone: I remember I used to write for my school newspaper...this was around 2000, and I remember this was when the band "Creed" was really big, and I remember one of the editors who was writing a story on Creed, said that Rock music was really "lost" (that was during the latin craze, boy bands, etc) Is rock still in this 'lost' period... |
