I am SOOOOOO happy that Queen didnt do a reality show to look for a new member of their band...thank god!!!!! I hope they never do a reality show...never ever! |

Serpent_of_the_Nile 02.04.2006 14:54 |
Great "publicity" for the band, no to mention how most American will find out how Big and legendary Queen was and still is. |
Sergei. 02.04.2006 15:09 |
But still you must reconsider the fact that there ARE, believe it or not, American fans that liked Queen BEFORE Freddie died and BEFORE PReen announced a tour. In fact I started liking Queen and then found out that Freddie was dead. :-( I'm saying this because I told my friend about the night on AI and she shrugs and says, "They feel sorry for Queen since Freddie's dead." |

It'll definitely be good for promotional purposes. I read the week after Stevie Wonder's recent appearance on AI, his new album re-entered the Top 100 and he had an overall 89% increase in album sales. The Queen show be interesting...I'll check it out for shits and giggles but I'll definitely be keeping a barf bag handy.... :-P |

They're playing in Oregon that night. Although they will be in CA on April 3 - 5. Who knows if they'll be taped. They could even obstensibly be there from April 7 - 9...? God, I hope not! 03-Apr-06 Anaheim, CA, Arrowhead Pond 05-Apr-06 San Jose, CA, HP Pavilion 06-Apr-06 Las Vegas, NV, MGM Garden Arena 10-Apr-06 Seattle, WA, Key Arena 11-Apr-06 Portland, OR, Rose Garden 13-Apr-06 Vancouver, BC, Pacific Coliseum Canada ETA: You gotta understand, I'm a major fan of one of the singers from a past season of AI, and yet this makes me go bleaaah. |

Sheesh. Another post from me. I'm sure the judges' comments will be ridiculous as usual. Does anyone remember the *preliminary* audition rounds from last season where the guy sang - heck, I think it was BoRhap, and they gushed all over him, "You sound just like Freddie Mercury!" Only... NOT!!! |

I went in my room, looked at my poster and apologized...lol This will be great publicity, but at the same time... im afraid if they'll butcher something so beautifully amazing (an all other synonyms for amazing/adjectives to describe QUEEN's music)... I duno, i guess ill decide after its over... but right now... im weary as hell about it... But i do watch A.I though... ITs a good way for talent to be exposed that record companies would normally turn away... But the judges are getting on my last nerves... Paula is just nuts... Randy, i dont even know what to say about him... But Simon is atleast truthful... I dont know how he can put up with Paula hittin him on the arm every five seconds... I echo the sentiment that he should just call her out.... |

good God almighty i watch this show, i will admit and the very thought of kellie pickler or bucky covington doing Queen songs makes my skin crawl chris daughtry, ok, he is the rock guy...but so what the hell does Taylor do...Queen ala Joe Cocker oh i dont know if i can take this one when Constantine did Bohemian Rhapsody I had a fit...YUCK!!!! but on the other hand GREAT publicity for the band and I will be really interested in Simon's comments.. |
bohemianrhap84 02.04.2006 22:34 |
this should be great. I am a big fan of the show. I would love to hear Katharine (my favorite) sing either Save Me or Love Of My Life. The only other person I would care about singing Queen is Chris who has a great rock voice. I'd like to see him do I Want It All or maybe Tie Your Mother Down. I think either he'd do well at. Of course, I'll be overly critical because I love Queen but hopefully they will not massacre Freddie and the boys' songs. |

wembley86 03.04.2006 00:37 |
so i have some predictions who may sing what? taylor- radio ga ga chris- stone cold crazy paris(she good but cant stand here)-bohemian rhapsody mandisa-body language katharine-i want to break free bucky- play the game ace- save me and the guy i forgot his name- i want it all these are just my predictions. it will be interesting. cant wait to watch that night."OH BOY" i wonder if simon would say that freddie would be rolling in his grave if he had one. and randy better not be what randy does best is be a total idiot. and paula is too kind sometimes. i cant wait to tell my mother tomorrow. maybe the guys will show up at voting off show the next day and perform wouldnt that great! seeya guys later. |
shammy 03.04.2006 00:45 |
Interesting... Bucky would have to stick to something like "Sleeping on the Sidewalk" or CLTCL or other bluesy tunes but I think the producers would prefer them to do better known tunes. It could be curtains for him otherwise. Imagine the headline - "The Queen Killed Bucky!" I could see Mandesa(?) doing "Somebody To Love" as a no-brainer. I think she could do well belting out them high and powerful parts that Freddie used to toy around his voice on. Katherine will probably end up with WATC as it's ballad/rock. Paris will likely get AOBTD. Ace? Who knows..."Dead on Time" j/k. The question...who will butcher BoRhap this time? Anyone got any ideas? |

LOL, they bought the rights of that program to a Spanish production company, the first program was called "Operación Triunfo", and they made millions here, so many other countries bought the program format. Hmm... I dont even have any predictions to be honest with you... Too many great songs to pick from... I just hope they do a good job. I do think that Mandesia will kill though! Shes amazing, what a set of pipes! I love Taylor too, hes got that old school feel to him. He's probably my favorite... I hope they divulge a bit though into more of Queen's other songs besides just the mainstream hits, because then that would give them so much mroe exposure... And i hope no one kills BoRhap... I really didnt like Constantine's version last year either... but thats just my opinion. And yea i know which guy ure talkin about that Randy and Paula said he Sounded j/ like Freddie, he sang WATC... He did NOT sound anything like Freddie... Crazy Paula.... i wanted to give her a five across the eye when she said that! Even my brother thought she was crazy!! |

I'm officially old as I'm getting cranky, but Donna13, why does "Queen needs all the exposure it can get?" They've sold over 100 million records, getting on American Idol doesn't make their catalogue better or worse, so what's the point of this? Are sales, or worse, popularity, that important to what's left on Queen? American Idol is something that Brian has recently railed against, then softened his stance when he found out Jim Beach had secured a night for them, which will of course help sales of the back catalogue. I think Jim Beach, Brian and Roger would allow Queen music to be used in cheesy porn flicks if it sold them a few more records. |

But it's "of course" for a reason, generally that Queen's best music is the stuff that's never heard. If Brian and Roger cared about their true musical legacy, then they'd have played some of the great early catalogue stuff on tour. Getting more WWRY/WATC type things from American Idol's glorified karaoke singers is the type of exposure that has desperation written all over it. In my humble opinion. |

In my humble opinion.Common sense would tell anyone that they're not going to go on national television or, for that matter, an arena of 8,000 people and play Ogre Battle, March of the Bacl Queen, Flick of the Wrist, Doing All Right, or My Fairy King because the majority of the audience isn't going to know those songs, and they have always believed that entertaining an audience means playing in large part what they already know. It doesn't have desperation written on it but rather good sense. And that's my humble opinion, with which you would obviously disagree. |

Boy Thomas Raker 06.04.2006 23:26 |
Mr. Faron Hite, and Donna13, I believe the beauty of this forum is that you, and I, are passionate in our beliefs. I believe Queen ended on November 24, 1991. I believe that no other group in history had a creative run like Queen did from their debut until Jazz. I believe that Freddie Mercury was the greatest rock star ever. I also believe that Queen used to be a creative risk taking entity, concerned about breaking new ground. I believe that they last did that about 25 years ago. I believe that, while of course never expecting Ogre Battle or some other obscure stuff to be played, that Queen plays these shows and does the musical with the sole hope of selling more records. I believe that they don't care about their musical legacy, which I believe is sad. Someone early in the post said that you can't expect them to pander to old fans. Nope, but if they put some time and effort into a box set and throw the odd bone to fans who were around when Queen wasn't a nostalgia act, but creators of some of the gretest music the world has seen, then I'd believe it was about the music. |

It's not a negative view, nor a positive view, it's my view. I don't want to persuade you, and you don't want to persuade me, I just feel that there legacy and the music would be better served by working on meaningful product. Lots of people thought the Robbie Willams, 5ive, Pink, Britney, Beyonce things were great for getting Queen out there for a new generation. May have worked, but froma creative POV, those efforts were forgotten in the blink of an eye because they sucked. So some people see those things as great, I see them as musical embarassments (as John Deacon did with the Robbie Williams collaboration.) I realize the world has changed Donna, but Queen used to be about something other than sales. I love them, but think they've become obsessed with the Queen brand, and forgotten what made Queen music so great. |

Nope, but if they put some time and effort into a box set and throw the odd bone to fans who were around when Queen wasn't a nostalgia act, but creators of some of the gretest music the world has seen, then I'd believe it was about the music.I can't quite subscribe to this view because "Save Me" and "Was It All Worth It" both fall outside of this 'creative run' you mentioned. But I agree with most of the other stuff. |

I just believe that saying their legacy isn't safe if they do things like this, is a bit dumb. In other words, doing anything a bit dodgy since 1991 is going to affect how the way people look at the band's past achievements etc.. Sorry, but I just feel that's in your mind. If you want to encase yourself in that way of thinking, it's up to you. Queen's legacy can never be affected by something so trivial as the stuff they're doing now. Purely because there's a clear mark between the past and present of this band. Peace, Adam. |

As far as AI goes, sorry to say, it will be the same songs that are played over and over on the radio. Sure iI would love it if they did something different, but the chances of that are pretty much non-existant. I can't wait to watch it though...to bad Mandisa got booted off, I think she would have done great. |

That's okay Adam, as I think misquoting or misrepresenting people is a bit dumb, so when I say that "I just feel that their legacy and the music would be better served by working on meaningful product", I'm not saying that their legacy isn't safe. I think they wrote some wonderful songsduring the 80s, but nowhere near what they did in the beginning. No shame in that, everyone has their creative peak. However, if my good fellow critics would read what I say instead of interpeting it the way they want it to read, I've never inferred or implied that they shouldn't tour, or retire or whatever. I just said that all of these things that are strictly ventures designed to keep the brand of Queen in the public eye are totally commercial ventures. Do you really believe that any of these remakes top the original, or are even close? I'd hope not. QP are very calculated, and take the safe step to ensure mass saturation and satisfaction. Today, I read about David Gilmour touring, and he's playing two sold out shows in Toronto this weekend. The first half of the concert is his new album played in its entirety. The second half, all Pink Floyd. He said he's less concerned about his legacy than he is about his work as an artist at age 60. I don't think Brian and Roger are thinking that way, not saying David Gilmour's right or wrong, just couldn't see Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd ever dreaming of doing A.I. |

Honestly this is my final word on this, as I'll let you have the true final word Donna :D I haven't changed my position once. I originally said "...but Donna13, why does "Queen needs all the exposure it can get?" They've sold over 100 million records, getting on American Idol doesn't make their catalogue better or worse, so what's the point of this? Are sales, or worse, popularity, that important to what's left on Queen?" So I think they're doing it for sales, always have. No biggie, just my thoughts! |
