***WARNING...THIS THREAD IS NOT INTENDED TO OFFEND ANYONE, I JUST WANT SOME QUESTION ANSWERED ABOUT THE UK IN GENERAL, PLEASE DONT THROW TOMATOES AT ME, LOL!!!*** Okay, on with the subject: I was talking to this chick that work with me at this hotel here in Milwaukee...and we were talking about the places we've been to, and she was telling me about the time she went to the UK, when she was a senior in High School(last year of grammer school here in the states) when she was 18...she said that the experience on a stale of 1-10 was about a 6...she said that the trip was okay, but it could have been better...she said that it was a real culture shock going over to Europe in the first place, but she said that a lot of the people there really kinda had their noses up in the air...(which was really surprising to me)and I'm not for sure about which city she was in when she went, but she said that the experience was okay, not bad, but that it could have been better...she got into an arugment w/a Bobby over there also, but it was a funny experience, w/the bobby and all. I also have a few guest at my hotel that said the same thing, they said that in general the trip was okay...but they expected it to be a lot better...I have one guest that said that Scotland was actually a little better than England, in regards to niceness in all...I've had a few guest thats been to Ireland, and they really had a good experience... I'm asking this question, because I plan on going over there in the future, and I just wanted to ask that general question. I just want to know what to expect when I go over there, etc. I know that here in Milwaukee, WI USA, people can be standoffish, and (its a bit prejudice, its an invisible prejudice), but once you get to know them, their fine...at least thats how it is with me, I'm terribly shy in person (especially speaking in groups, I'm better one on one), but once you get to know me, I'm fine! I might sound intersting over the internet, but I'm boring as hell in person, at least thats what I've been told, lol. |

I've heard that British people are very friendly and polite, but I've also heard that they are rude and obnoxious. I guess there's just a lot of mixed notions about the British... :-S And don't let people tell you that you're boring in person, I bet you're loads of fun to be around! :-D |

Well when we were in Liverpool we overheard the waitress in a restaurant complaining about us. "For fuck's sake, not more bloody Irish scumbags! Why can't they just stay in their own fucking country?" Doesn't mean they're all like that though. We met some lovely British people on holiday in the States a few years ago. |

I don't think you can generalize a country just by a few people. I know a few people who could talk for England but that doesn't mean we're all like that. You can get gobby people everywhere not just England. |

UK... like any other country has good and bad people. Some people aren't very nice and others are friendly and easy to get along with. I'm English and i'm nice so we do exist :D |

I try to be rude to a foreigner at least once a day. It's a badge of honour. As it's full of Chineses and Poles in this neck of the woods they can't understand a word I'm saying. Pardon. Excuse me. What do you mean I should learn the language? |

It's all down to different cultures, yes like all nations the British can sometimes seem rude, many are just as in all nations, however, generally once you get to know people they come out of their shells. We are a small country with a lot of mixed cultures throw together, it always amazes me when I travel around the country how different we all are from each other in just short distances. Try to imagine America and all it's cultures, deep south, New York, Californian, etc all lumped together in the size of the UK, get the idea, just because we are small doesn't mean we are all the same. We all have opinions about other nations that are stereotypes, i.e. ignorant Americans, rude french, tight scottish, stuck up English etc etc, the list goes on. At the end of the day We are all different, lets celebrate it!... |

dimcyril 28.03.2006 07:08 |
the difference between English and British perfectly simple. Great Britain is made up of three countries Wales, Scotland and England. i believe i'm correct to say that the United Kingdom however, consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and that Northern Ireland isn't included in the name Great Britain. i'm sure i'll be informed shortly if i am incorrect. it is a common error for people from abroad to call us all English. however Wales and Scotland have their own distinctive cultures and language [well Wales does anyway. i'm not sure how widely spoken Scottish Gaelic is these days]and many people get a bit annoyed when people assume that we are all English. we are all British but NOT all English. |
@ndy38 28.03.2006 07:13 |
More people in Scotland speak Punjabi than Gaelic now, but apart from that everything you said is very true Dimcyril. It annoys me greatly when someone from abroad thinks i'm English. Especially on a day like this, where Arsenal play Juventus...... Forza Juventino! |
Munchsack 28.03.2006 07:19 |
I don't count myself as British, although technically I am. I can't say I think you can judge people on their nationality, but most English people are scum. |

I refer to England as England and the whole as the UK or GB (Depending on Ireland, I suppose) And, I found Brits and Scots to be quite nice but (And I sincerely mean this...) not quite as nice as the Parisians and French Swiss. Actually, you can find jerks anywhere just as you can find great people. To the original post-writer: Don't go with any ideas of how people are going to be, otherwise you'll actively seek those people. Instead, go looking for a good time and be determined to have that regardless of the locals' attitudes. |

Oh, and one more thing, the British currency is quite rude. Expect everything to cost around 1 pound more than it does in dollars and then check the conversion rate. That being said, St patty's in London was the best ever even if it cost me over $200. Well, at least I'm told I had a superb time... |

Munchsack wrote: I don't count myself as British, although technically I am. I don't have anything against England, that would be a naive and stupid (well, i HATE English football with a passion), but i refuse to get a British passport because of two reasons, one because i want Scotland to be an independent nation, and second because i really don't like the monarchy. Those are also the reasons why i HATE when people refer to Scotland as England, it's just blatant ignorance and there's no excuse for it. |
