This borat is mocking somebody who had enough self humor to make fool of himself in a slicker and funnier way. Old joke, old hat, then.
What makes it all the sadder is plucking the aids issue as something freddie must be remembered for, (Freddie is much more than an aids victim) and showing it in a tongue in cheek way (freddie hid his illness till a day before his death actually because apart from being discreet and introverted he didn't want to be pityed or belittled for that).
Then aids is something killing millions of people something not to be treated so lightly, how many people were dying of aids when borat played this cheesy joke?
I don't mean to be patronising, and probably will come across as such, but Borat and Ali G seem to be characters which don't travel beyond the UK too well.
I'd encourage y'all to go and find some more Borat. Truly surreal funny stuff.
Ravenetta wrote: seriously, everybody makes jokes about everything. theres topics ppl dont like to talk about like racism and such, but ppl joke anyways, lighten up. this is one of them, yes freddie died of aids, and hey, Borat poked fun of himself (whether its true or not) about his 'std' so it wasnt just to specifically bash freddie, and didnt he mock others too? plus everyone makes fun of anyone whos famous, we love freddie yes, but people love leo decaprio and still make fun of him.
anyway i kinda thought it was hilarious, a little on the tasteless side, but it couldve been worse. plus its not like they said freddie sucked or anything. its just goofiness.
I think you're right, usually I wouldn't care but I just cannot stand Borat!
Ugh grow up and don't take Freddie too serious. Did u hear the people cheer when he said "It's me Freddie Mercury!" ? No you don't hear that, u just get pissed cuz somebody "mocked" him. Same as the Electric Six parody...get a bloody life. Sasha Baron Cohen is great. Typical of u guys for saying he's not funny of just one little joke about Freddie, ugh...

yea exactly thats what i keep in mind and that everyone has to make a living
I thought it was kind of funny. Ali G really is usually a pretty clever comedian/sketch writer and performer, imo. He can act so cluelessly offensive in the most brilliant way, if that makes any sense. I can understand if this was the only thing you had ever seen of him then you could easily think he was some fool who was taking cheap shots at FM. This clip really doesn't really represent his shtick very well.
Maybe he's not for everybody but I have grown to enjoy his him over time. If you get a chance then perhaps check out his DVDs of the Ali G Show. You might get a better idea of where he's coming from in this clip. I imagine he probably does admire FM even if this bit might make you wonder if that really is the case.
yeah, it may have been a bit too far, that one, but i fink a lot of his stuff is meant to be taken in a satirical way (look at Ali G) in the sense that he is actually sending up the people who share the 'i'm not a loolee-loolee' attitude. And hosts with a lack of tact are often a laugh.
Sacha Baron Cohen's characters, whether it be Ali G, Borat or Bruno (from Austrian Gay TV) all rely on the fact that they are very confrontational, making people feel uncomfortable in interviews. If it didn't offend someone, he wouldn't be doing it right!
Personally, I love the 'Borat goes back to Kazakhstan' bit on Ali G Bling Bling - "This is my wife. This is my other wife. This Is my Girlfriend. This I have to pay for - but she worth it...WA WA WEE WA!"
That and when he started pissing off a bunch of public-school nobheads in Cambridge. Pure comedy!
