Brian, Roger and Paul. A bit of a shamble vocal-wise, but interesting. Take Love still in the set as well. |

What about '39??? |
Champipple 16.03.2006 23:18 |
No 39'. Crowd about 80% full. Very loud crowd for Toronto standards (Toronto usually really sucks). Brian was on fire tonight, no mess ups on I'm in Love With My Car. I'll let people who have seen other shows make comparisons, but I thought it was a great show. Catwalk went out to row 16. I'm going to bed now. Goodnight! |

Very nice show, like stated, Under Pressure was played. Very flawlessly done, prehaps a little too bright lol, overall a fantastic tribute to our main man, Freddie Mercury. |

Well, this show I thought completely out did the Jersey show in October. Hell, It was F'ING amazing!!!! Under PRessure was great. I would say venue was more like 90 - 95% full. The boys were on FIRE!!! Roger was GREAT on let there be drums. Pauls voice did the job tonight hands down and Brian at one pont when he first came down the catwalk, stopped to take it all in, looked like he was in heaven. Brian KICKED ASS tonight and looked like he was having a fantastic time. Great to see young kids there aswell as the baby boomers!!!!! All in all, ONE HELL OF A SHOW!!!! I'm glad they changed the set list in Toronto by adding U.P.!! Still would have liked more 70's stuff, but I guess they have to play the hits at shows like this. Boys, if you read this, Well done and hell, come back to old T.O. any time!!!!! 9/10 in my view!!! I was on the floors close to the catwalk and the floors were on there feet the entire show. Well done Toronto!!!!!! mike GO LEAFS GO!!!! p.s. - When Champions was being played, I thought of how great it would be to hear that song in that building when the Leafs win the Stanley cup!!! Ah one can dream can't he..... |
Suigi 16.03.2006 23:55 |
Just got home. Got through Love of my Life, with a good chunk of people singing along. The place was rockin! Paul, despite a few miscues, did a good job. Rog and Brian were fantastic, as usual. I came home with a sore throat, ringing ears, and a smile that I won't be able to remove until Monday. LONG LIVE THE QUEEN! P.S. Did anyone else notice that Track 13 from Made in Heaven started playing as people were leaving? Very cool. @Guy Above Me: Not this season, mate. Maybe not ever, especially if the current management is focused more on the money. But it's nice to dream. |
elespa 17.03.2006 00:08 |
Wow...All I can say is wow. Brian was TIGHT!!!! Paul was solid, and the slow stuff was really awesome. Everyone was singing along and it was just great. The lighting was insane and sound was perfect. Under Pressure was done flawlessly, i thought. Take Love was an awesome song (said it was new). Probably the most insane show i've ever been to. Easily the best concert to date. Cheers Boys |
BonesJones 17.03.2006 00:32 |
Unbelievable, you didn't want it to stop. Everyone was singing. Brian's was amazing, he is a rock god. |

Wow. Some random thoughts here: I have viewed the DVD (Return..) over and over, and also downloaded most of the concerts from the European tour and listened to them repeatedly. Still, seeing them live in person was an amazing experience, despite being very familiar with the show. As others have mentioned previously, Under Pressure was played for the first time. Brian introduced it by saying something along the lines that it's his favourite part of the show: the part where they try something new. I'm paraphrasing here, but it was something along those lines. Someone from the stage (Roger?) was yelling at Brian while he was introducing the song. You could hear "play it!" or something like that over and over. Sorry, my memory's not too sharp right now =) He then said something like "There's a lot of pressure for me to play it." Brian did well on the high notes, but I think there was a miscue, with Jamie coming in too early on the backup vocals, which caught Brian off guard. Paul also had to refer to the teleprompter for the lyrics to Under Pressure. Not a big deal, except the big screen happened to have a zoom up of his face right when he was heavily concentrating (not singing, just reading) on the teleprompter on the ground. It looked funny =) In introducing Love of My Life, Brian said that there was a groundswell of people wanting to sing along, whereas in America, people liked to be sung to. He then asked, "What about Canada?" People cheered loudly, but he said, "Well, you can do whatever you want," in a friendly way. People did sing fairly well. I was a bit surprised. Also, Brian got a standing ovation when he walked down the catwalk to perform. Dragon Attack was high energy and well executed, except for Paul coming in too early (though he caught himself). I liked how they included the bass solo, drum solo, and guitar solo, as in the studio version. The ending was "cute." The new song, Take Love, had a decent enough riff to make it catchy. Can't recall it now, though. Did anyone catch what Roger said after his drum solo? All Right Now was amazing. Especially towards the end, when the guitar comes in for a big build up after a small bass solo (as in the studio version). I'm actually sick and tired of We Will Rock You and We are the Champions, but I appreciated it tonight. It looked like Paul forgot the lyrics during Champions, and improvised with some "We love you ToooronntooOOOoOOOOoOOoo," type things for a good 15 seconds or so as only Paul can do. Brian filled in with some guitar noises. When Paul eventually remembered where he was and continued with the verse, I saw Brian look up at Danny, who applauded. I guess he was applauding at the relatively smooth recovery, although Brian's guitar noises covered up the first few words of Paul's recovery. Every song got a good reception, though I noticed a lot of people started to head to the bathroom after Brian followed up Love of My Life with the slow start to Hammer to Fall. The "speeding through the streets of London" thing on the screen was probably lost to most of the audience -- I doubt most fans here are aware of the whole Buckingham Palace thing. Maybe they could have found something else to put up there. Can't think of anything else to say. It was an amazing show with great sound, lights, mood, everything. I will never forget this day. |

What an amazing show. A few miscues but all in all awesome stuff! I enjoyed the new tune and thought Bad Company was performed especially well. As familiar as I am with the show I was still surprisingly moved by the Bohemian Rhapsody portion with Freddie singing. Very powerful stuff indeed. |

I posted this "review" at a non-Queen music message board I hang out at, and I thought I'd post it here since the reading audience on this board will most certainly appreciate it more - LOL! OH... MY... GOD!!! I honestly do not have the words right now to give any semblance of a proper detailed review of the amazing and awe-inspiring show I just experienced tonight. I have waited most of my life for this show. It obviously wasn't the golden age of Queen with Freddie at the fore commanding his audience, and I of course wasn't expecting it to be, but lemme tell ya - it was as bloody close as many of us will ever come to it. Freddie may not have been there in body, but he was most certainly there in spirit. And Paul Rodgers does an absolutely fantastic job in his efforts to somehow fill those damn big shoes. I was honestly blown away by just how good he was, an how great the band jelled as a whole. They truly seem to be having a great time performing together and seemed to be in great spirits tonight. I've purposely stayed away from watching any footage of other Q + PR shows, other than some of the "Return of the Champions" DVD, and did not read any reviews of other shows so far or look for setlists, so that I would not be too jaded to the whole experience. And am I ever glad that I did. The entire show unfolded before me with one fabulous performance after another, and I was about as thrilled by what I was watching as a kid at Christmas in a room full to the rafters with presents. I had third row seats that turned out to be just to the right of Brian May's primary stage position, and just to the left of a huge platform at the end of the stage. It was an amazing seat, and felt closer to the stage than 3rd row. I had a perfect up-close view of Brian for more than half of the show and was able to watch him play without any need for the monitors. He played beautifully. It was mindblowing to finally be THAT CLOSE to such a legend. The whole experience was just overwhelming. To my own surprise (because it's honestly not like me to do this), I found myself tearing up about half a dozen times during the show, including during "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" in the first part of the show for some inexplicable reason, and flat-out weeping during "Love of My Life", "The Show Must Go On" (what a powerful performance - plenty of goosebumps & noticable teary eyes all around me from people of all ages), and even during "Bohemian Raphsody" towards the end - but with good reason: The entire first half of BoRhap was "played" by Freddie - the stage went dark and suddenly there was Freddie at the piano on the big screen behind the stage, performing it live from a past show. Right before the guitar solo the band reappeared, and kicked into the heavy part live with Paul on vocals. And then the outro, again played by Freddie. And all around me, a sea of people in awe and tears. I heard so many people talking on the way out of the show (and calling in to Q107) who said the exact same thing - the whole show was just amazing, but BoRhap was the absolute stand-out of the show. Over-all, this now ranks as one the best concerts I've ever attended, easily in the Top Five. I will never forget it. And I'm so eagerly anticipating doing it all over again tomorrow night in Buffalo that I'm honestly not sure how I'm going to sleep . |

frikkin Under Pressure! oh my god! how cool was that??...quite unexpected, and a pleasant surprise. Not done flawlessly...but that's a difficult, complex song to pull off live. They rose to the challenge and did a fine job of it. Brian intorduced it by saying it was the first time they had ever performed it live in North America. |

That's great GlitterQueen! I think that the power of a Queen concert is an amazing thing, and even though it's not 'Golden Era' Queen, it's the next best thing. Glad everyone enjoyed it, I probably should have gone. Where's Sir GH's review? I know he was looking forward to this show. |

Ok, how hard is it for the guys to give us this kind of satisfaction? They play Under Pressure and suddenly we're all happy, hehe :). It's not THAT hard. I think that the correct term for the type of setlist is not a "rolling setlist" but an "evolving setlist". It changes (very) gradualy every 3 shows or so and it hardly brings back any of the tracks that are left off (BreakFree was surely a surprise, I want it all was a shame). Comparing the current setlist with the one they played in mid spring 2005 (the shows I attended), now there are 6 different songs for me to enjoy in San Diego in a couple of weeks. I hope they keep Under Pressure in the set, bring back '39 (I'll politely scream it to Brian during his acoustic set, hehe), drop Break Free in favour of I Want it All and maybe some other surprise... Sleeping on the sidewalk? It's Late? It's not that far fetched to hope for another surprise in the next 8 shows or so, or is it? hehe :) About the setlist, let me put it this way: Is it an gradually evolving setlist? Yes, it is. Is it a rolling setlist? NO... RIP rolling setlist 198X hehe, just kidding :) See you in San Diego.. Wiley |

Wow, what an amazing show this was!!! I was in NJ in October and I didn't think it could get any better than that, but this show was even more amazing. Major Dissapointment was the seats. I had row 7 seats which was great but when I was buying them I called ticketmaster to ask about seating arrangements and was told that lower number seats were closer to catwalk. I wasn't totally convinced and of course they were completely wrong and I was on the far side of left floor... man, i reatlly hate tickemaster. I was happy to have my digital camera with me and used up my entire 1gb card on pictures and videos, i must have 15 video clips of the show including Under Pressure which was awesome and wil be a great memory. Brian was in top form as everyone mentioned and Roger was amazing... loved the vocals as usual. Paul Rodgers was very good and I really enjoyed some of the Bad Co stuff they played. Glad everyone enjoyed the show. Only sad part is that I was thinking at the end that this could be the last time I'll ever seem them live... I really hope that's not the case. |

Jericho06 17.03.2006 11:27 |
Here is my review of the show: Queen Plus Paul Rodgers at the ACC Twenty-four years ago on August 3rd 1982 I had the extremely good fortune to see the legendary Freddie Mercury fronting the rock band Queen. These guys were my first favorite band as a child and I got to see them with my uncle at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Freddie was the consumate showman. Flamboyant and majestic. The last time he toured was in 1986. Sadly Freddie passed away from AIDs in November of 1991. When the announcement came on December 11th, 2004 that guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor intended to reform the band for a European tour I was apprehensive. Bassist John Deacon had opted not to participate and instead sit in his mansion collecting royalty cheques. However the choice of incredible vocalist Paul Rodgers to front the group intrigued me. Rodgers was the leader of classic rock bands Free and Bad Company. There was no question that the man could sing and the idea of the reunion piqued my interest. They embarked on a succesful European tour in 2005 and then announced dates for a North American tour this year. Last night the reformed group rocked the Air Canada Center. Brian, Roger and Paul, along with auxilary players Spike Edney (who toured with the band in the 80's), bassist Danny Miranda and rythm guitarist Jamie Moses were in top form. After an intro that included the sweet It's A Beautiful Day and the Eminem song Lose Yourself the band took the stage. Paul sang the wonderful Reaching Out before the boys dove into a rocking assault of classic Queen tunes. A smoking Tie Your Mother Down led to a great Fat Bottomed Girls followed by singalong classic I Want To Break Free. These tunes were well played and Paul acquitted himself nicely on the vocal chore. He then took guitar in hand and led the band on a new song Take Love. This is a rocker reminiscent of 70's Bad Company stuff. Very nice. Next was the rockabilly tinged Crazy Little Thing Called love. The audience (about 90% capacity) was pumped. Brian May then took the stage with an acoustic guitar and played the wonderful Love Of My Life. The crowed sang along on this tune dedicated to Freddie. Next up was an acoustic Hammer To Fall which dove into a rocking second half of the tune. At this point Brian mentioned that we were about to get a first. He explained that he had been under a lot of pressure to play this one tonight. Roger yelled from the drum kit "Just play it!" and they launched into Under Pressure. The first time this incarnation had played it on this tour and a rare one even on the European leg. It was a little rough around the edges but a wonderful surprise. Next Paul sang the Bad Company classic Feel Like Making Love. The crowd adored it. A short drum solo led into Roger's fan favorite I'm In Love With My Car. Brian then went into an extended guitar solo which featured elements of Brighton Rock, Chinese Torture and Last Horizon. Suddenly a grand piano rose from beneath the stage and playing it was Paul. He struck the familar opening notes of the song Bad Company. Man this tune was incredible. The version was absolutely smoking. I was so happy they brought it out for this leg of the tour. After it was done Paul said "Thank you for remembering that one! Now you may know this as well!" Can't Get Enough (another Bad Company song) followed and it was incredible as well. The audience was on fire for these tunes and Paul sure felt comfortable singing his songs he had been doing for years. It was funky time now with the double shot of Another One Bites The Dust and Dragon Attack. Dragon Attack is new to the setlist and Paul muffed the vocals a bit but recovered nicely. Roger Taylor then sang again. This time the reflective song These Are The Days Of Our Lives followed by Radio GaGa which had the audience joining and clapping along. Paul did the vocals on the second half of the tune. The Show Must Go On followed and then came |

The concert was mind-blowingly amazing... It was a surreal experience to actually be there and see the guys in the flesh, sing along with them, clap live to Radio Ga Ga... The ACC was throbbing! Brian May is a genius - I knew that but now have seen him live to confirm it - the Red Special sound gave me goose bumps, Brian sounded fantastic, like he had an entire orchestra behind him! I was also happy to see Roger take centre stage and loved it when he threw his sticks at the end, so Rog :-) IMO Queen + PR is a huge fan experience for those who know their story not only their awesome music - there were many touching moments from the past, like the picture of Brian's clogs from the 70's in the images from the Japan tour that they played with Those Were The Days of Our Lives, the images of Freddie singing BoRhap at the Wembley concert in '86 in his Betty Boop top, etc. Having said that, they're fresh, alive and actual, they're on fire - and they ROCK! I loved the mix of pure house-shattering rock with emotional moments like Love of My Life, nostalgia in Those Were the Days of Our Lives, and awesome surprises like Under Pressure. I waited about 15 years for a Queen concert, and last night was fantastic and unforgettable. Brian seemed not only to enjoy himself but to be really moved by the wave of love and adoration coming from the crowd... He said something along the lines of "this is such a surprise, it's such a bonus in my life", and I was like "what do you think it's like for me, then?!" |

It was awesome! I thought roger was at his best! His drumming rocked! Brian, rocked and i loved love of my life! Very moving. Bad Company songs were played really tight as well, take love is a pretty good tune. Like others said about 95% full. My nephew (he's 20) was blown away also. I almost died when i heard UP though! My fav. queen song. Vocally a little rough though, but still rocked! My camera broke, so i had to buy a disposable:( bah! All in all a great night!! tour books were 25 dollars!! |

GREAT SHOW!!! Don't think they could have done any better... well maybe a little on the new song "Take Love". It was my very first concert and let's just say it's quite ironic that my very first concert was of my very first love and appreciation for a band. Paul Rodgers is no Freddie Mercury but he impresed me quite a bit. When I got to the ACC I was freakin' nervous! I mean seeing real talented musicians LIVE! and not on DVD was AWSOME! When Taylor started playing "These are the days of our lives" and showed Freddie Mercury on the big screen everyone just screamed or shut up (it was a combination of both). And then it hit me, there was a peice of the puzzle missing, and I'm not talking about Deacon. And sure, Freddie Mercury was not there in a solid form but he is with us all the time, in our hearts. Like I said this was my very first concert and trust me I'm not as old as I sound! This concert was a great success and I'm sure that wherever the late great Freddie Mercury is right now, he would be very proud of not just his fellow band members but of all of us. All he wanted was his music to be heard and appreciated, and his wish was, is and always will be fulfilled! Thanks for listening to Freddie's and Queen's music, to my favourite band and reading my note. Once again... Thanks! |
Champipple 17.03.2006 20:51 |
Now I've had time to soak it all in a bit here are my thoughts. First, I'll say it again, for a Toronto crowd it was rocking. I was on the floor in the 17th row and that was a great place to be. Close enough to the main stage to feel a part of the show and really close to the mini stage but not looking back. The band was TIGHT! It was a real thrill to see Roger Taylor being Roger Taylor. After decades of watching him play drums on VHS and DVD I got goosebumps at times. The drum solo was IMO the best he's ever put together with audience participation and guitar in it. I'm always amazed at how what looks on paper like a ho-hum setlist can turn out so well in person. Everything flowed nicely and it was a well put together show. Under Pressure was a bit unorganized vocally, and by this I don't mean that lines were flubbed or out of key or anything, but you could tell it is a work in progress as they figure out who is best to sing what line. Personally I loved it! It is always these types of songs that make a concert memorable years down the road. Think about how we all remember shows where Freddie flubbed lines and fucked up and how special those are. The average "same old" shows all tend to blend together. I was happy that Brian and Roger both look better in person than in pictures. Photos do add weight and wrinkles. Roger in particular looks great with his hair cut shorter than on the European tour. PR was PR. He was exactly as I expected and I really appreciate that he made it possible for this tour to happen, and he's doing his best and probably is one of the better singers Queen could have gotten. Vocally he is very smooth and adds lots of flourishes, but there are several songs that I don't hink suit him well up there. Sorry, I can be a Queen fan and not a PR fan and still enjoy the show. Take Love is the type of Rock song I don't really like. Kind've a 2 chord ballad that's been electified. All Right Now absolutely ROCKED with Brian really cutting loose. Brian always looked like he was really enjoying himself the whole show, but especially on this song I think he pushed himself. I imagine it must be a relief to be able to play such a great song without worrying about comparing himself today to past years. Dragon Attack was great too. This is a great song for PR and there was a great jam during this song as well. Most of the other songs sounded more or less the same as on Return of the Champions. But there is something very special about being there in person. Great show, I'd go back in a second! |

No one will believe this but.... Just got back from Toronto 24 hours later. Row 17, seats 22 and 23, or alternatively, right in front of the catwalk. Our feet were actually on the staging, not the floor of the ACC. stood the whole time, leaning on the barrier, close enough to touch the band, and my wife did shake Pauls hand at the very start of the show. Show was awesome as mentioned elsewhere, I took some incredible photos but have to comment on the Under Pressure story earlier. yes Paul did forget the words to UP, but the reason you saw him struggling was because he couldnt find the words on his prompter and, no word of a lie, my wife coaxed him through it till he found them on his screen again. We were just to the left of the screen, the right as he looked at it, and many times during the show they looked for the words, but on this occasion the screen wasnt helping him, my wife did. I know it sounds unreal, but its true. He managed to find his place when the next verse started, and then he stopped looking at her and started looking at the screen again. Overall UP was a bit of a mess, but a wonderful, mesmerising mess and I wouldnt have missed it for the world. |

I've had my recovery time. I enjoyed the Toronto show so much. There were a couple of mistakes but that's part of the charm of live music. I had a grumpy woman sitting next to me but my friend and his 14 year old daughter really enjoyed themselves so grumpy was hardly noticed. I thought of going to Buffalo but thought it would be hard to get decent seats. Maybe Detroit. |

Death to Ming! wrote: Also, Brian got a standing ovation when he walked down the catwalk to perform.Yeah, that was an incredible moment. I proudly contributed to that! Did anyone catch what Roger said after his drum solo?Nope, I couldn't discern it either. The "speeding through the streets of London" thing on the screen was probably lost to most of the audience -- I doubt most fans here are aware of the whole Buckingham Palace thing. Maybe they could have found something else to put up there. No way... for those of us who *do* get it, that's one of the best points of the show. Can't think of anything else to say. It was an amazing show with great sound, lights, mood, everything. I will never forget this day.Ditto. An incredible night. Words can't express how excited I was when I heard the first notes of Dragon Attack. I'm so glad I stayed away from the forums, so it was completely new to me. Brian played it amazingly. Now, imagine if I had stayed away from the forums and experienced the New Jersey show with no clue of the setlist. But that would have been practically impossible. It was far too exciting in April to avoid. I downloaded mp3s, videos, and pics of practically every show that month. Ah yes, I digress, as is my custom. Paul is a fantastic entertainer. I really have grown to appreciate him. But it seems that Brian was a bit more energetic on the guitar in Buffalo, especially during his big solo. It was awesome to finally meet all you guys before the show, after talking online for years: Tony, Ryan, and Thorsten. Few things can compare to talking Queen with other hardcore fans. I need to add one more thing. I was in the upper bowl, before the show, and I heard someone do a Freddie "ehh-doh!" No fooling. I, of course, responded in kind as best I could. Anyone else do something similar? |
goinback 19.03.2006 02:01 |
I wondered if it would have been cool to have one of Freddie's audience sing-alongs on the screen like they did at the Tribute Concert. Maybe it would be awkward for Paul right after that though, unless Brian does a song himself first.... |

Oh yeah, I was all the way in the back in 306, did anyone here me screaming for '39 during the acoustic set? Someone looked back at me and then I felt like a bit of a dick, I remembered that guy from that old bootleg that kept on screaming for Liar and shut up. |

Unfortunately the grumpy woman next to me decided to try and kill my enthusiam. Since they had been playing '39 I don't think it unreasonable to encourage Brian to play it. I think grumpy people should stay at home. |

There is really nothing more to say that hasn't been said so far. I was totally blown away by the whole show. It was great meeting fellow Queenzoners in person especially Bob after 5+ years of conversing over the internet. Glade you made it to the show without the setlist being revealed. |
Zak Royen 19.03.2006 23:24 |
i take credit for being the first person to scream "'39 please" :P |

"Did anyone catch what Roger said after his drum solo?" i think i heard the words "not", "long", and "baker"... |

Amazing, amazing show. I can't add much to what has been said, but I took over 300 pictures and got some great shots. Props to my fiancee for holding the camera every time I had to get up and dance. :) The music was good, we had awesome seats, and it was wonderful to hear Queen live. PR was awesome, I had no expectations going in but I was blown away. I have yet to get the pics online but shall do so soon. :) |

Two weeks without Queenzone wasn't as bad as I thought it would be! zakroyen wrote: "Did anyone catch what Roger said after his drum solo?" i think i heard the words "not", "long", and "baker"..."Not as long as Ginger Baker" ? |

The lighting was insane and sound was perfect. Under Pressure was done flawlessly, i thought. Take Love was an awesome song (said it was new). Probably the most insane show i've ever been to. Easily the best concert to date. Cheers BoysThese are the kinds of reviews I like to hear about...Cheers to you |
