Hey Queenzoners! I was wondering which version you love better of Too Much Love Will Kill You song, Freddie's or Brian's track? What one hits you really hard with emoution and power? Which one brings you to tears? I love both but i would go for Brian's version it just brings me tears it's so moving and when he sings it he means it from his heart. Freddie ofcourse had so much power and strenth but i think it suits Brian more. Freddie.... or Brian....? Peace :) |

Freddie's. Brian's version sounds like he's complaining about life. Freddie was near his death and it didn't sounds so in this track. |
Mayboy 15.03.2006 08:16 |
Freddie's version! it holds more meaning for me when he sings it. |
Sebastian 15.03.2006 08:17 |
Brian's, by far. |

Freddie's. Absolutely Freddie's. |
Mercury007 15.03.2006 10:53 |
Freddie's - he had more power and grit in his voice than Brian, and thats what made the song so good. |

Freddie of course sad song but lovely when he sings it 2nd brian yes very good video very sad to see 1 empty space |

Brian because his soft voice suited the song better!Freddies version is great though but Brian wins my vote |

I like Freddie's because he puts more power into it, but I like when Brian sings it because of the video. |

Wouldn't it be great as a duet? Brian and Freddie... |
Freya is quietly judging you. 15.03.2006 13:07 |
I like both versions, I like Brians video to his version and I like Brians voice but then Freddies version is just so powerful.. I don't know.. I'm indecisive as usual.. |

For me Freddie had the most amazing voice I ever heard and near this song with HIS voice is authentic, becouse HE had been LIVED what HE sang. |

Brian's. As i've said before: Freddie sings, Brian delivers |

Freddie's but I really LOVE Brians. |
KingMercury 15.03.2006 19:31 |
brian's version why?? because it's quite emotional..it brings me some tears to my eyes that version is from an "after freddie's death" era, so you can realize that he is singing right from his heart... when i listened to the freddie's version (when MIH was realeased) i was with that version, because the power freddie sang with but after the years, i choose brian's version definitely but i must say freddie's version is very beautiful too, less emotional, but beautiful |

I'm very surprised that the vote is so evenly split on this. Brian sounds like he reached deep down inside for his version; Freddie sounds like someone who was just handed the lyrics before stepping into the studio. Brian's version is intense; Freddie's sounds casual. Only Brian's version matches the serious subject matter of the song. So, my vote is for Brian. Freddie's vocal on this track is a good example of what IMHO was Freddie's biggest weakness as a vocalist: the inability to consistently express emotion in a song. On many 1980's Queen songs Freddie seemed content to just BELT OUT the vocal, with little regard for the sensitivity for which the song may beg. That said, I love Freddie's voice, of course, and he did a GREAT job with the great majority of Queen material! |

That said, I love Freddie's voice, of course, and he did a GREAT job with the great majority of Queen material!I have to completely disagree with you on this; I always felt that Freddie's biggest strength as a vocalist was the amount of sheer emotion he brought to every song, even the 80's ones. How can you not say that "I Want to Break Free" isn't delivered powerfully, or that "I Want It All" lacks emotion? So many other songs of his (that he sang) known and are made great because of his emotion; from the 70's, you have Bohemian Rhapsody Somebody to Love We Are the Champions We Will Rock You Save Me You're My Best Friend Spread Your Wings Get Down, Make Love All appropriate for the song, and each unique. The emotion of "Get Down, Make Love" is very appropriate for a gritty, sexual song like that. Compare that to the powerful longing of "Somebody to Love." Even in the 80's, when Queen's quality indubitably dropped, you have an enormous amount of songs where Freddie expresses incredible emotion VERY consistently. While I'll grant you that some albums had that "phoned in" feeling to it, overall I think Freddie maintained power and emotion in each song, and that the emotion in each song was appropriate and unique for that particular number. Consider: I Want to Break Free I Want It All Radio Ga-Ga It's A Hard Life Hammer to Fall The Miracle One Vision Under Pressure Who Wants to Live Forever Princes of the Universe One Year of Love A Kind of Magic Khashoggi's Ship Among very many others. And I need not even DISCUSS 1991's Innuendo, one of the most emotional albums ever made, I daresay. So I have no choice to say that overall, you are dead wrong in your pronouncement. |

dougie wrote: I'm very surprised that the vote is so evenly split on this. To me, Freddie's version is the most passionate of the two. It's filled with regret, anger, frustration and love. I think the 'belting out' that you mention IS (was) Freddie's emotion. He sings this song and I get the chills. It's beautifully moving. Brian's version, IMO, lacks all of what Freddie brings to it. It's just a song when he (Brian) sings it - if I didn't know the meaning of the song to him, I wouldn't FEEL anything from his version. In fact, he makes it sound painful to sing, like he's straining to reach the notes. Just my opinion, of course, but I, too, am surprised the vote is so evenly split. |
mike hunt 16.03.2006 01:32 |
I find people strange sometimes, Did someone actually say "freddie's weakness as a vocalist is he doesn't show emotion" you must be kidding?....that's what makes freddie so amazing as a vocalist, it not how high he sings or how long he holds a note, it's the emotion he brings into every song, doesn't matter what style of music. |

I'm actually shocked people are saying brians at all, for me his version is pretty horrid. The chorus his voice is so horrible I have to shut it off. On the other hand the MIH version is vocally brilliant. also I love the drum sound from roger. |
spymyshadow 20.03.2006 09:36 |
bri wrote it, so his version is exaclty how it had to be sung...but freddie changed in some way the mood. Bri is saying all I got from life is sorrow, and that because of love, Freddie instead seems to say, Life is choice, and there's no way to get out of it. Sorrow is the price to pay, but in the end who knows if there's a meaning in it? |
SomebodyWhoLoves 20.03.2006 09:40 |
I think Freddie's version is more subtle but because the song's words matches so closely his real life situation, it is far more emotional than Brian's version. The case CAN be made that Brian SANG with more emotion, and yes, I know the song is about Brian's real life problems but come on, which has greater impact? A man dying of AIDS or a man singing over a divorce? Of course Freddie's version is more beautifully sung because Freddie is the greatest singer in the history of singing. LOL. However, I love all four of Queen members equally. Is love the correct word? I think so. I genuinely respect, revere, and just plain like these guys. From John Deacon, to Roger Taylor, to Brian May, and to Freddie Mercury. Equally. |
@ndy38 20.03.2006 09:47 |
Freddie's version, i think his vocals are just too good. No offence to Brians, his are fine, but just not as amazing as Mr.Mercury's. I tend to prize vocals more than anything else though, as far as the rest of the music is concerned, i'm undecided, i like bits of both. |
spymyshadow 20.03.2006 09:47 |
is that song only a question of how much disgraced you are to perform it better? |

Keeping in mind that Brian is a guitarist first....a vocalist about 20th.... can we even compare?? Freddie is usually voted by readers of any magazine with taste and class the greatest frontman in rock. Brian was a guitarist/songwriter in the same band. Is it possible that a vocal by the guitarist/back-up singer could possibly overshadow the work of the greatest frontman ever?? I doubt it. Seriously friends, I love Brian May...and I am a guitarist myself... But folks, I have friends that can sing equally good as Brian...and they don't feel they are good enough to be in any band. And they are right. Brian May as a vocalist only would have never seen fame....guaranteed. |
