I hope I don't piss anyone off by asking this, but is there a way to subdue Montserrat's voice in these songs? Or a way to pump up Freddie's? My first choice would be to hear only him with her relegated to the background if possible.
What's wrong with her voice? You did buy this knowing it was Opera music, right?
If anyone has a more distinguisable voice, maybe Maria Callas, but Montserrat is one of the best ever.
So, like Brenski, I wonder why you would want to do that?
To answer all of you -
I have the boxed set, Serry, but have yet to play any of the CD's or DVD's. I will definitely do so now. Thanks for pointing that out.
As for the album itself, I bought it as part of Freddie's solo collection. And while Montserrat and other opera singers might have amazing voices, I simply do not enjoy them. I'm a Freddie Mercury fan and want to hear his voice alone or WITH hers, not hers overpowering his - which is how this sounds to me.
And to Brenski - I heard it the way Freddie wanted me to hear it... I didn't like it.

I agree. I LOVE the Barcelona album - my favourites are 'Barcelona','How Can I Go On',and 'Guide Me Home'. These are truly some of the most beautiful songs ever! Freddie and Montserrat made a wonderful collaberation,AND...it fulfilled one of Freddie's biggest dreams;)
I'm a huge barcelona fan also, one song freddie truly was close to singing opera was this albums version of 'excercises in free love' (I forget the name of it) was truly brilliant. I personally rank this album up there with freddie best, but will it ever get the respect it deserves?....guide me home and how can I go on also rule!

It hasn't yet.
As much of a Freddie fan as I am, I cannot get through this album. I respect all of your opinions about it, but opera is not a genre I appreciate.
I love listening to the music and Freddie's voice. Remarkable voice. But the moment Montserrat begins to sing, I cringe and lower the volume so much, it might as well be off. I can't help it.
I wanted to like this album because of how much it meant to Freddie, but that's not going to happen for me. Not the way it is now. Which is why I asked my original question -
Is there a way - a program I can use/buy - to tweak the voices so Freddie's is upfront and Montserrat's is in the background?
Guide Me Home and Barcelona are the tracks I really love. The others are a little silly, but there's bits in Golden Boy where his voice really shines.
I kinda like the idea of fusing rock and opera. Not sure if I like the way it came together on this album. But there's definitely good bits in there... I must agree with Fried Chicken that Freddie really wasn't an opera singer and it shows. Still he does some amazing things when he goes further towards Rock.
The song barcelona is brilliant also, the second track is breathtaking. One of freddie's true masterpeice albums, cabelle is one amazing singer! silly?...in what way?...barcelona is more original and creative than Back to the light/another world and electric fire could ever dream of being.!
