I need a man’s perspective on something.
I’m a fiction writer and my hero sees his love-interest being assaulted. She's in the clutches of some guy and shows signs of having been knocked around. I'm guessing my hero’s first instinct is to pummel the bad-guy into the ground, but I need more. I need to get into his head - what is he feeling, thinking?
So... can any of you gentlemen out there share what your thought process might be? What emotions might you acknowledge at the moment you realize ‘your’ woman is in danger? What about during the fight? Are you thinking about her at all or are you completely into the fight zone?
A couple of notes – my hero has yet to openly acknowledge his feelings for this woman, but they are real and they are strong. She's in shock, so she doesn't come between him and the villain during the fight... and just so you know, in the end, the villain does get away (at least for the moment).
Oh! One other thing - the villain is armed with a knife, but the hero only learns this after he’s involved in the fight.
I’ll take whatever info you want to share. Thanks in advance! ;-)

That depends, is he desperate? Does he enjoy fighting? Or does trouble just keep coming to him?
Wow. You are right there, aren't you? :-)
No. Hero is not desperate. He's a hard-working man who owns his own small restaurant and puts everything he has into it. He's certainly not afraid of a fight, but he doesn't go out and look for one. As for trouble coming to him - until he met the heroine, that wasn't an issue. ;-)

he thinks "i would do anything for her"
but since he is a guy he says "shit shes hot"
unless he is a lover and not a needer as you said he thinks that this is too complicated to tell anyone but evryone under stnads tha he would fight for the one he loves even to the death. he has strong friends who might also gang up on the guy for him but he never trusts them becuase they are drugggies with the hots for his girl
Obviously he feels righteous indignation towards his female friend's attackers. In fact, he would likely feel this seeing any woman being attacked by men. It is just intensified since she is a love interest. Of course, during the fight, all he is thinking about is staying on top and not getting his ass kicked - unless he is Bruce Lee, where he would lazily take them out as he would the trash.
lol. Love the Bruce Lee analogy. :-)
Since his feelings are intensified because she's a love interest, does that make him less careful? I mean, would emotion blurry his thoughts here... or is that too much of a feminine thing?
As far as concentrating on staying on top during the fight... what does that mean regarding thought sequence? The way I wrote it left no room for thought. It's more of an 'act, don't react' moment. That's how I figured a guy would behave in this situation, and that he'd 'react' afterward. So, I'm guessing by your reply that that's about right, yes?
Yes, definitely. Unless he is going to stand there and analyze a fight sequence while those men are torturing that poor girl, ha! It would also be really different if he had significant training in the martial arts.
No martial arts training for my hero. But he's street-wise and so won't shy away from this brawl. Nor will he let his lady-love be abused while he's still breathing.
Thanks for helping out here. I'm going to rewrite a small part of this scene to add a breather for him. Instead of him going for the girl once he gets the villain down, I'll have him wait to be certain the guy is out (which he won't be). That will give me a chance to insert a bit of introspection without it seeming contrived. And then... back to the action.
I feel better about the scene now than I did earlier. Thanks so much!!
