Thought i'd do one for drums aswell seeing i did one for bass. Well my thought is that even though the drum sound is quite bad on Jazz i think it has the tightest and most imaginative drumming produced by roger. Along with John the album has a wonderful rhythm section. |
RETROLOVE 06.03.2006 01:33 |
Mmmmm, okay, I havent been a Queen fan for that long, but I will say that my favorite songs where you can really hear the drums are: Fat-Bottomed Girls Now I'm here Liar (live version) I'll come back when I think of more, lol |

Regor 06.03.2006 05:00 |
For me the best drum sound is on both NOTW and The Game - full, but not blown up - with a great room sound, but razorsharp. The Jazz sound is rather strange IMO. |
zaiga 06.03.2006 05:06 |
News of the World... I love the drumming on "It's Late" and "Get Down, Make Love" |
Togg 06.03.2006 07:50 |
It has to be NATO and DATR for me, the toms on your my best friend just rock. I never liked the drums on News of the World I felt they were too muddy, but I do like Jazz for an alternative take on Rogers sound. I have to say I never felt Mac got a very good sound comparied to Roy Thomas Baker, but David Richards did a lot better I think. |
Great King Sam 06.03.2006 08:31 |
News Of The World... timbales all the way (I'm sure there's a few others who may agree). That's one of Roger's best kits IMO. And I know a few people dislike the Jazz sound (I'm not one of them), I think his drum work on this was awesome. Although, they do sound a little dry, having a full drum sound against the production of the other instruments would have sounded a touch weird. |
Daniel vZ 06.03.2006 08:43 |
I like the more natural sound, so I like the drums the most at "A Day At The Races" and "The Game", and I think the drums are the worst on "Jazz" |
Al TurHao 06.03.2006 10:13 |
Are we discussing Roger's playing or the drum sounds?? Roger's Playing: Queen, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack. Drum Sound: SHA, ANATO. Oh, and for the record, best bass album, without a doubt: ADATR. |
Jazz 78 06.03.2006 10:37 |
Playing wise? Tough one but I prefer Queen II. Soundwise? It's a toss up between Queen II and NOTW. Big sound on the kit. Innuendo sounded great too! |
lozitopj 06.03.2006 13:02 |
I think Roger's best drum sound was from The Game. Being a drummer, I love the crisp sound of his drums, especially on AOBTD...Definitely produced very well...Cheers!!! |
deleted user 06.03.2006 13:24 |
the works is obviously a loser in this catergory, mainly cos there isnt a real drum sound, its all synth and drum machines. if i did choose a song off works it would be gaga live version, sounds so cool with the base drum kicking in... boom bah boom bah boom bah..... |
Jay Mantis 06.03.2006 13:48 |
News of The World for sure. Just listen to sogs like It's Late and Fight From The Inside to hear why. Tight and strong that's how I would describe the sound. :-) |
RoHo 06.03.2006 13:58 |
I tend to like the early "big" drum sound of Roger, this means Queen I Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack. And I like the drums on a few songs on The Miracle. By the way I have to mension that I'm very dissapointed with the drum sound of live Queen albums, all four albums have a quite weak drum sound. the snare and cymbals are quite okay but the bass and the toms are simply weak. (maybe The Return Of The Champions is not that bad, but compare it to other artist's live material!) |
RETROLOVE 06.03.2006 14:59 |
Yeah, I forgot about "get down make love", thats another good one! LOL! |
Sebastian 06.03.2006 15:07 |
Sheer Heart Attack and/or A Night At The Opera. |
Asterik 06.03.2006 15:17 |
Well I hate the drum sound on all mack's albums, including The Game- they sound truly awful on Dragon Attack and Play the Game- flat and dry as pancakes. I like News Of the World and innuendo- lots of power. |
cmsdrums 06.03.2006 15:42 |
Soundwise, The Works (and the Works tour) drums are awful, and to be honest the album is not Roger's most imaginative playing. Soundwise again, but on the good side, The Miracle, Innuendo and Made In Heaven sound great (especially Too much Love will Kill You. A Day At The Races has some superb playing - can't believe no-one has mentioned White Man yet! - and a magnificent sound for the 70's (compare to something like Abba from the same year and you'll see what I mean!). News of The World also is pretty hot, with good sound, and such variation in playing styles through All Dead, All Dead, It's Late, Who Needs You etc... the drums on Lost Opportunity (single b side)also show Roger's skill and subtlety in blues style playing. Finally, his playing on his solo version (not The Cross one) of Final Destination is superb, and such a shame to have it hidden away on a single b-side. cmsdrums |
RoHo 06.03.2006 16:13 |
I forgot to mension Rogers solo work. If you have it listen to "Stange frontier extended" It starts with a very nice drumwork, its my favourite! |
pigs in space 06.03.2006 16:21 |
"Finally, his playing on his solo version (not The Cross one) of Final Destination is superb, and such a shame to have it hidden away on a single b-side." Sorry matey , that drumming ain't Roger . Its that Yoshiki bloke/women . dam good drumming it is too ! I like the drumming on the 12" of strange frontier single . nice bass drum work |
cmsdrums 06.03.2006 16:49 |
Although Yoshiki (bloke!) plays drums on 'Foreign Sand', the drums are definitely Roger on 'Final Destination'. The sound of him opening his hi-hat on the snare during the verses gives it away, and generally the playing carries his usual trademarks - finally the clincher is when you check out the credits on the CD single sleeve, where it says; "Roger Taylor: vocals, drums on Final Destination" !!! |
Al TurHao 06.03.2006 17:35 |
To CMSDrums: Final Destination has no real drums, as they are programmed drums. Yes, most likely done by Roger, it has his touch, but that is not a real drum set. |
cmsdrums 07.03.2006 07:20 |
Hiya, I'm certainly not getting into an argument with a fellow Queenzoner, but I beg to differ on the drumming on Final Destination! The drumming is too organic for programmed drums, and has certain nuances and fills and ghost notes that no-one would bother programming. I agree that the sound of the drums is a bit different to Roger's usual sound, but this could be due to recording it in a different studio with a different engineer - it may even be that he played the track but then replaced the true sounds with samples (tell me a drummer who hasn't, I know I have before!), but this would still mean that the playing is real. Going back to the sleeve notes, it wouldn't specifically make a point to say 'drums' - Roger Taylor if it were programmed; it would have said 'drum programming' or something similar. IS there anyone out there who has a copy of Japanese version of the Happiness? where this appears as a bonus track? If so, does it have any more info in those sleeve notes? Either way, he's still a great drummer AND programmer! Cheers |
Sunshine 07.03.2006 08:27 |
I always get very into the drum beat when I hear Under Pressure. For me it sums up the ultimate Roger Taylor style and you hear it instantly...Also Now I'm Here...very Tayloresque:D |
Rick 07.03.2006 09:19 |
Innuendo. |

Lord Fickle 07.03.2006 18:31 |
NOTW and The Game have the most consistantly pleasing drum sound, in my opinion, followed closely by ADATR, in particular, White Man, which has an awesome drum sound. I think the later albums have the worst drum sounds, particularly Innuendo, and were all quite inconsistant. Some tracks have a better drum sound than others, and I Can't Live With You, and Breakthru spring to mind as being extremely let down by a weak drum production. |
Al TurHao 08.03.2006 05:47 |
Dear CMSDrums, Of course, no bad discussion emerges from here, but indeed drum machines can perform miracles. Yes, the song can be sampled, but as a drummer, I have seen producers programming excelent drum lines even with ghost notes. So, without the disrespect I go for programmed drums on Final Destination. For instance on Happiness album, there is hardly any real drums at all. But yes, I agree with you, Roger is one hell of a drummer and programmer. ;) Breakthru is also a machine. Better sound than THE WORKS (vomits), but still a machine. |
liam 08.03.2006 07:55 |
i did intend people to talk bout rogers drumming techinque not what the drums sound like but thats ok. |
Seven_Seas_Of_Rhye II 08.03.2006 11:34 |
It's very hard to say for Queen cause they were always good regular=constant=standart in drums. Yeah, Innuendo, ANATO, SHA. But actually because that's my favorite ones :-) For the other bands I love Beatles White Album. Ringo always fiund something very interesting and extraordinary. |
goodco 08.03.2006 14:36 |
Sheer Heart Attack (easily) Song that I enjoy Roger's drumming the most.... oddly, it's 'Good Company'. Quirky, subtle, but just damn enjoyable. |
mike hunt 08.03.2006 23:55 |
as I said before "sheer heart attack" is my fav from roger, but if your talking only technique than "jazz" isn't far behind. The drum sound on jazz wasn't great but the playing itself was some of rogers best. |
Fenderek 09.03.2006 07:24 |
I'll agree with JAZZ- all those rhythm changes in Dead On Time, all this stuff in If You can't Beat Them... There's some amazing work he did on that album...! |
mike hunt 12.03.2006 01:30 |
I always wondered why roger didn't play in the studio like he did live. He was a monster drummer in his live performces. |
deleted user 12.03.2006 06:11 |
cos then we would see nothing special in terms of his drumming at live performances! |
Cricket Nutter 12.03.2006 15:25 |
As a drummer I'll know :D The most complex piece probably is the intro and some of the outro to "Loser In The End" as its in a different time signature at times, and uses what is called linear drumming. He did get better at times live, and Liar at Ealrs Court is very very good. For best drumming albums, I would say Queen One and Two was his most technical (excluding some of his Smile work), but were the most poorly mixed due to technology and money. |
kiko39 14.03.2006 00:16 |
Technically speaking, his best albums are Queen and Queen II. BUT, the sound in Queen sucks a lot, mainly because of the not so good recording. The sound of the hi hats in Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack is amazing. So I would say in terms of sound it would be the period from Queen II to A Day At The Races. |
