I've always wondered why a great song like Liar never reached a high position in the charts (Probably because it was too long and it didn't get a propper release). But even a radio edit would've been great! The song has so much potential, for me it's Queen's first ever jewel!
Not to mention that it sounds incredible live! :-)
The song is great for being played live, but it's not suitable for radioplay. I don't know the radio edit, but I don't think, editing could help. It's simply too long (the opening part before the vocals set in is more than 1:30!) and there are too many different parts – every part is great, but as a sequence it's not recognizable enough for the mainstream listener. It's not the usual song structure.
I heard the single edit about a year ago. Similar to what they did with the US radio edit for 'It's Late.' Start with a quick intro, one verse, no solo. Very jarring and disjointed, almost like another song.
I think its a great song, but I don't think it would work well on radio. Its a bit long - maybe if it was on a later album radio stations would have played it more. Great guitar in that song.
Liar is a great song, but it's easy to miss considering how uneven "Queen" is, and especially the fact that it isn't particularly radio-friendly.
Liar and March of the Black Queen show that Freddie was trying to write Bohemian Rhapsody from the word go.
My Fairy King contains some stunning piano bits of Freddie. One of his best songs, IMHO. Love it. Especially the BBC version. Also some pre-Boh Rhap parts are in here too.

THANK YOU!
I mean I love Liar and do think it's possibly under-rated by some but My Fairy King has got to be Freddie's least acknowledged song. I love that era where he was into that...argh..can't even think of a genre for it! :)
Probably my favourite from Queen I. Together with The Night Comes Down.

Millionaire Waltz shows that Freddie couldn't stop!
I agree, Liar was extremly underated. That's nothing new, queen have loads of underated songs. Millianare waltz and it's late are also underated. How about Great king rat or my fairy king?
You could consider the entire first album to be underrated then, which I think it is.
When I talk to non-Queen fans about music and we come to Queen then most of them think Queen's earliest album is A Night At The Opera.
THANK YOU!

My Fairy King is a beautiful track...and it probably went as close to true prog-rock as queen ever got.....the whole "alternate reality" theme...oh, and the complete lift from Robert' Browning's - The Pied Piper of Hamelin: (but still pretty awesome nonetheless)
Where waters gushed and fruit trees grew,
And flowers put forth a fairer hue,
And everything was strange and new;
The sparrows were brighter than the peacocks here,
And their dogs outran our fallow deer,
And honey-bees had lost their stings,
And horses were born with eagles' wings; link
I agree that Liar is underated, but I believe that the Doing All Right was there first Gem. I mean I know the song was originally a Smile song, but with Freddie on vocals and the piano in the beginning, that song just clicks, it's amazing really.
I dunno if Liar is too underrated actually...it's a favorite among Queen fans. A lot of bands have really good early album tracks before having a breakthrough that non-fans have never heard....
