The Beatles were not overrated. Queen was defiantly more proficient with their instruments and Freddie was a much better vocalist than any of The Beatles. It is probably safe to say that The Beatles were far more influential and even perhaps more import in the history of music. But Queen is the better band. Brian May: "To us, to me, the Beatles are completely awe-inspiring as writers, performers and "Movers of History" - I can think of no-one else who gives that total feeling of centrality. Sure, the Who and Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix all took the intensity of rock to greater peaks afterwards, and were much more virtuoso-like in the actual playing of their instruments. But for innovation and colour and humour and awareness and sheer bloody jaw-dropping consummate artistry, I can't see anyone within miles. (OK, I hear you, maybe that old Queen group, but it's hard for me to be objective in this area!) In any case, as I say, for US, the Beatles were, and always will be IT. Why are they not exciting the kids of today? I would be very interested to know. I think it just needs a bit of work in the translation. I would actually like to see a real renaissance of the Beatles as voices relevant for today's ebullient youth. My daughter got very misty when these guys played "Let it Be". As it should be. Hail the Beatles !!! Bri" |

Come on, Yeah The Beatles are good, but I'm hunderd percent sure not the best! They indeed meant a lot for pop music, but IMHO there are bands who also did a lot for music, and I think they sound mutch better. Take David Bowie for example, where The Beatlese changed the sixties, Bowie changed the seventies and eighties. His impact wasn't as big as The Beatle's but musically seen he has a bigger range and the songs are also more pure, if he chooses a rage. Harder, if you know what I mean. If The Beatles choose to do some Rock 'n' Roll song it would still stay rather soft, if Bowie did it would really Rock away. Same for Queen. Queen mixed styles no-one could ever think of mixing with a decent result. Queen's result was enormous. For example Bo Rhap, different music styles in one song and even mixing Opera with Rock. Queen had a lot of influence in the Rock/Hard Rock scene. And apart from that Queen's stage act was unbelieveable. Freddie Mercury had more charisma in his big toe than Paul McCartney in his entire family. The band Mercury created with the audience every night is unbelieveable. Take LIVE AID in 20 minutes he has 80.000 people in his freaking pocket, and his vocal performance wasn't even horribly good (at that point). And when his vocal performance was horribly good (seventies), it was also horribly horribly good. take the Houston show for example. Queen has such difficult notes, but (apart from missing them sometimes (okay more often than sometimes) he would just hit them. If Freddie Mercury wore something strange it would immediatly be double strange cause he shows it so extravargant. Apart from that Queen has 4 incredible song writers. Roger Taylor has the ability to write pure raw Rock 'n' Roll, like it appears in many dreams. Those strong Rock 'n' Roll songs come truly to their right by Roger's tremendous RAW voice. Brian May is one of the worlds best guitar players (IMHO the best one after Jimi Hendrix), he has developed such an incredible and enormous sound so his guitar builds a wall of music."Brian May can do things with his guitar, I can only dream of doing" - Eric Clapton. He is also a multitalent in music writing. his ballads, are the best. They contain such an emotion, and such an opportunity to show emotion, that no one could ever reach his "ballad-writing-talant" in my honorable opinion. His rocks songs have that nice wall of sound, sound. And he has also incredible experiments, like the classic and by music knowers widely adored "Prophet's Song". Truly one of the best in the music scene. The strong silent one, isn't as silent and is enormous strond. In the eighties his stage act was even wilder than Brian's, (he even imitates The Who at Knebworth XD). He never makes mistakes on his bass, and he plays solid. Like a bass should be solid. Listen when Queen covers other bands, and pay attention to John's bass-line, you will mention it is extreemly good. ABout John's songwriting. You couldn't even fill one entire album with John songs. But what he wrote was so incredible that more than half of his writing works became hits (IWTBF,AOBTD,SYW,FWBF,PISCTP(yeah this WAS a hit in Holland),YMBF, Back Chat, One Year of Love, The Miracle) ALL THIS comes out of the most shy and modest person called John Deacon. Another example, Pink Floyd. The Beatles made the first steps towards psychedelic rock. That's all, their psychedelic songs are rather week in my opinion. But their first steps gave band like Pink Floyd the opportunity to appear. What do i need to say about Pink Floyd? their sound is unice. Their lyrics are sacret. And there will no-one be in their genre to ever defeat them. who will say The Beatles are better than Pink Floyd should sit in a corner and deeply shame itself. Also PF's performance was way more extreme than The Beatles. The didn't have charisma so they scored on another point. Take The Wall tour for example. It looks like a theater play, but is just a |

Beatles. I can't *stand* the pseudo-rockers who think the Beatles are overrated, or suck. They think that if they say that, it instantly qualifies their opinion as 'edgy' or 'against-the-grain'. They think 'OOOH, no one's ever said the Beatles were crap before, I'll say it now!'. They just look like morons when they do that, with no appreciation for music. Didn't these *morons* listen to Abbey Road? Or Sgt. Pepper? Frickin' *masterpieces*, who cares if it's because of the Beatles or because of George Martin... they were fucking great. I'm not in the habit of choosing favourites actually, I listen to the Beatles and Queen in even doses. But I only mention Beatles because there's no other group I'd consider better than Queen. |

My mum is a bigger queen fan than me and saw them twice (wembley '86 and Live Aid) but she is also the biggest beatles fan that i have ever met. Nobody said that you couldnt be fans of both bands. And plus they are in totally different catoragories. The beatles were the first proper boyband but also (besides the rolling stones) in there later years created a new type of Rock N Roll. John Lennon is a great Songwriter and even Freddie agreed when he was with us. If freddie could admit that then surely you can. I am not a Beatles fan but i admit that some of there tunes are amazingly written and performed. The beatles were always better on tape (or whatever it was) than they did live, and they were only around as a band for about 9 years. Queen, however, were around as a band for nearly 30 years which is amazing for a rock n roll band! And queen always sounded just as good as they did on tape and most of the time they sounded Better. Queen were about the performance and the music but the beatles were all about the music. Let me just make this clear, my fave band are and always will be Queen. And i am not a Beatles fan. I like bands that not only sound good but are amazing performers as a band and individually. OK I hope that this made sense PHEW! |

zone wrote: If there was a band I liked better than QUEEN I would be on their web site .Strange question to ask on a QUEEN site.I don't think this is a strange question at all. You don't need to be obsessed about Queen to be in this site. There are many general music fans who might be interested in Queen or might be getting to know the band and they write in this board. I started out listening almost exclusively to Queen when I was 10 years old and fell in love with the band. I really admired many things about them. I think they are underrated by the general public but they might be overrated by some of their fans, hehe :). I mean, I love the band, they are my favorite band ever and no matter how many new songs or bands I know I always go back to Queen, but sometimes I get bored. Out of sheer interest I got into the Beatles aswell, and I admire them very much. I think Lennon and McCartney were geniuses in their own and wrote some marvelous tunes. McCartney's melodies are so catchy. I also got a bit into Pink Floyd. I'm not very much into long music pieces or suites but their sound is unique and their lyrics are awesome. The Wall is a masterpiece, and so is Dark Side of the Moon. Nice music to be depressed and not feel bad about it, hehe :). Great music quality. Having said this, Queen definately had something that made them unique. Many things, I believe. Their early albums are almost perfect. Even in the 80s, when they became a singles band, they managed to write and record great songs and very catchy tunes. I just love them, they are by far my favorite band, but I acknowledge the Beatles' innovation and the fact that they caused a revolution in only 8 years as an active band. Wiley |

I wouldn't say I like them "better" than Queen but as Queen is no longer an actively recording/touring band (any PLUS incarnation does not count in my book) I usually name the Cult as my favorite band. I've seen them five times since the 80s. Only saw Queen twice (in the 70s). I love Magnum. I almost had a heart attack back in 1986 when Roger Taylor was on Radio1 and when asked what he was doing next he said producing the new Magnum album. That was my two favourite bands coming together and I was so stoked. As it turned out the album that came out, Vigilante, has some great songs on it but my big issue has always been the production, it sounds a bit muddy in places. So Roger could have done a better job with the sound, on the other hand it was his idea to add saxophone to the track Midnight (You won't be sleeping) and that decision turned a good song into a great one. |

I'd say bands like Led Zep, Pink Floyd and The Beatles are as good or better than Queen, when you take into consideration their overall body of work, their lyrics, melodies and live performances (not so much the live stuff with The Beatles... but they existed before the live stadium performances of the other bands became possible). There are others which are perhaps second to Queen but almost as good, including Rolling Stones, The Who, Bee Gees, Guns n Roses, The Doors... |
mike hunt 19.01.2018 20:20 |
Most will say The Beatles, Zep, Floyd, Stones, Hendrix experience and The Who are 6 bands that are considered to be better than Queen . After that than It's Queen, The Doors, Sabbath, Rush right behind those first six bands. Sorry but Guns N Roses almost as good as Queen is nonsense. I give them their dubute album, but half of their big songs were covers. Like civil war and Knocking on Heavens Door. They have that bad boy reputation that's why people love them. Don't get me started on Nirvana....even the foo fighter are better than that mess. Kids love them because they wanna be considered cool. ACDC will be mentioned as well. |

I find I play Alice Cooper more than I play Queen, but it doesn't mean I like them better. Eventually, I ALWAYS come back to Queen.... |

ACDC will be mentioned as well.Priest are doing a US tour this year. If you're going, get there early for the support band, Black Star Riders, who are old school melodic rockers with a edge. The legendary Scott Gorham plays guitar (along with cool dude Damon Johnson on lead guitar and Ricky Warwick on vocals). BSR likely to be on first, Saxon next (I was never a fan, but get why people like them); then Priest are top of the bill. |

They developed out of Thin Lizzy -- basically they were a tribute band with some original members but when Ricky Warwick joined and started writing new material they decided to rename the band BSR. I've seen them live twice, and also saw Warwick & Johnson twice in separate acoustic tours. |

Judging by the low volume of work by GnR and high volume of hits, they might be second in place after Queen no problem. Led Zeppelin is more hype then anything. It's cool to mention them in conversation. |

Artists I like as much as Queen would be the Eagles, Van Halen (up to 1984). Little Richard, Elvis, Billy Joel, Johnny Cash and Credence Clearwater Revival :-) |
mike hunt 21.01.2018 15:44 |
I Agree Holly....Im no Huge Zep fan, but they were on a different level than Gun n Roses. No debating on that please. They were a powerhouse who are considered pound for pound a top 3 band. Slightly ahead of Queen. Queen are better than Roses in every way. The guitar is the only real debate. Slash will win the popularity contest, But Brian May was the better overall artist and player. Let's say Led Zep were top 3....Queen were 7 or 8th and Roses in the top 15 or 20. I also consider Priest above Roses, It's not all about Hits you know? |

As many people here wrote, there are no bands better than Queen, only the equal on their talent & abilities :-) For me Beatles, Pink Floyd (Barret's era, early Waters's and early Gilmour's epochs), Def Leppard, FireHouse are the most comparable to them! |

They inspired millions of kids to pick up a guitar or play the drums. The 2007 show is also the biggest rock concert of all time (certainly the most anticipated). Over 20 million people applied for tickets. |

Its really schizophrenic to write hundreds and even thousands of posts on this forum and say that Queen is not your favorite band. But in reality are just pretentious opinions from people who made it their occupation to contradict everything and everyone. |

I don't think you can dismiss anyone on this board that has an interest in Queen and bothers to come here and discuss, but actually has other bands or artists he or she 'rates' higher. The person maybe got into Queen later in life and had a different first love than many of us have or listens to Queen for different reasons and got into them because they listen to certain bands that credit Queen as an inspiration (like: Glamberts that got introduced to Queen). They at least they keep an open mind and i applaud that. I listen to lots of other bands and see them live in concert, but i never try to compare them to other bands because that ain't a fair comparison. Every band i like have a certain place in my heart(ugh, i know) for various reasons. :) |

Sometimes It's about admitting a band had a bigger Impact than Queen like The Beatles, but still like Queen a lot better. If the Question is what bands I like better than Queen? The answer is none. My favorite band by far is Queen. I always said how can anyone rate a band like GNR and Nirvana higher than Queen? On the other hand there is nothing wrong with admitting when a band were perhaps a bit better, or had a bigger Impact. Even if you don't like those bands, like The Stones. Not one of my favorites, but I can't deny their Impact was a bit higher than Queen. Every Rock band is compared with The Stones. How can I deny that? |

I know The Beatles had more impact in terms of culture and influencing thousands(?) of bands down the line (incl. Queen), but it doesn't mean they're 'better'. In the end it's a matter of taste. I still rate them lower than Queen, because i can. :D I never really got into the Stones, they didn't have had an impact on my life and quite frankly i rate them as one of the most overrated bands ever. Same goes for Led Zeppelin. |

Everyone is overrated in some way....I'm not a big time Zep fan, but have no problem with their high status as Rock Gods. The bands I think are the most overrated Is #1 Nirvana....how can anyone put them up there with the likes of Zep, The Who and Queen is beyond me. #2 Is Gun N Roses....most of their big songs are covers, and besides slash are nothing special or groundbreaking. Even slash isn't that amazing. They were good, but not great as people say. I can't believe reading who was a better singer on YouTube and how even the comments were. Those are some deaf people. Axl is not on Mercury's level. Never was or will be. Axl is the most overrated frontman ever. The big boys with Freddie are Plant, Daltry, Halford, perry among others....debate all you want with those great singers, but not Mr. Rose. |

Manic street Preachers, never heard of them. I'll check them out. I seen that name brought up here on Queenzone. |

Spot on The Fairy King! I have loved the Manics since 1992. Intelligent individuals, down to earth and of course they are Welsh! :-) They write their own lyrics, music and are amazing live. James Dean Bradfield is an excellent guitarist and his voice is brilliant. Personally think every album they do is awesome. They have dabbled with different styles but always seem to pull it off and even their B-Sides are album worthy. The way they bounced back and continued after Richy's disappearance too, when it affect them so much. 'The Holy Bible' is simply one of the best albums of all time and quite remarkable. |

Beach Boys are really doing it for me at the moment, more so than Queen I guess. I think my Queen interest peaked a couple years ago - there's definitely something to be said for not over-exposing yourself to artists that you love. I can still objectively appreciate Queen's music, and there are times where I listen and am still really moved by it, but I know it all so well that I rarely feel compelled to put on an album. Perhaps some really good remixes of the first five albums would serve as a breath of fresh air. |
Chopin1995 05.02.2018 12:39 |
^ 'over-exposing'... I had the same with Chopin. My mother bought me Chopin's CD in 2010 (I didn't ask her to do that) and it changed my live I can say. I didn't care much about classical music before, but after a few hearings this CD moved me so much that I started listening to his music probably too intensely and by 2012 it was not the same. 6 years have passed and I regained some of the excitement but it's still not the same (although there is still a lot of pieces that I don't know by heart so they are waiting for 'discovery'). When Queen became basically the only music I was listening to (in 2014), after going through all live recordings I knew it was time for a long break which lasts until today (more or less) bacause I didn't want to loose 'this'. I know when I'll come back to Queen I can still feel the same like in the beginning. And we have over 300 concerts. So yeah... you must be careful but it's really hard to control sometimes. |
beemack74 05.02.2018 18:04 |
Have to agree with the comments about the Manic Street Preachers. Fantastic band. I think they're very much underrated. I'm also rather fond of the Kaiser Chiefs, Oasis, The Verve, but of course no band was/is as great as Queen. With the possible exception of Little Mix. ?? |

Since this is just a matter of personal taste... QUEEN just can't be beat...But The Beatles, KISS (1973-1980) and Led Zeppelin are all alongside in my very personal Olympus. Then come The Doors, The Sweet, Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper, Mick Ronson,Clapton and...too many to list! |

Queen from 1971 to 1991 unbeatable lets get that stated first here, but other bands i must point out where a little underrated from the 1970s, like "The Sweet & "Pilot" who's guitar sounds had BrIan May influences in them and Queen harmonies. I agree with Mike here in that Axl Rose is very overrated as a front man and let's face it he cannot sing for toffee. Nirvana are just crap. |
Vali 06.02.2018 11:16 |
As I always say to my friends when similar discussions are taking place, I guess most of us here will have a similar approach: Queen is in the "A-list". And that list starts and ends with Queen. That doesn't mean I am still obsessed and think the world revolves around them . But I've felt that way for a big part of my almost 42 years. So I know they will keep that status til the end. But then there's the "B-list". And there are dozens of artists there that I really love, while considering myself a big, big fan of a few of them, (almost reaching the "Queen status"): Springsteen, Bowie, Supergrass (or anything Gaz Coombes does), Extreme (or any solo/side work from Nuno Bettencourt), Steve Vai, Chris Cornell, Foo Fighters (and the solo work from Taylor Hawkins)... and the old GNR (I love they are touring again with the almost "classic" line-up, but indeed Axl lost his mojo many years ago). And then my B-list goes on with The Beatles, the Stones, Pink Floyd, Prince, Manic Street Preachers, Neil Young ..... |

[/quote] supergrass is one of the most, if not the most, underrated "britpop" band, besides being my fave (from the genre). i had the chance of seeing they live before they disbanded and 15 years later, it's still one of the best concerts i've ever been to. gaz solo career is also great, his third album will be out in a few months, def looking forward to. |

Queen did have some Led Zep influence, at that time on their first two heavy rock albums, but after that they were totally original and had their own genre - I call it "pomp rock" in the mid 70's followed by their own distinctive brand of art rock and arena rock. They even diversified into synth pop in the 80's and were more diverse than Zep in this respect. |
