Let's face it, Prince could have got up there and sung a medley of songs from 'The Tweenies', and he'd have still blown the rest the mediocrities on the bill of the stage.
From the sounds of some of the new material I've heard from his forthcoming 3121 album, that he is returning to the spirit of his 1980's work. (Those who have heard the full album say there is a good mixture of electro funk, soul and rock tunes on there. And IMO, 'Fury' ,might be the best rock track he has written since Let's go Crazy) He also appears to be returning to the spirit of his golden age judging by the the band he had backing him. And I am not just saying this due to the presence of Sheila E, Wendy and Lisa - the band confguration is pretty much the same as for his mid 1980's tours (i.e. keys, drums, guitar, bass and percussion - ans no horns or dreadful rappers. I'll excuse the dancing girls, however). It also looks like he has jettisoned all of the Jehova's witness rhetoric that marred the othewise excellent songs he released a few years ago. (He is, of course, entitled to practice any faith he chooses. Just don't go replacing the guitar solo in Purple Rain with a five minute JW monologue! (As he was prone to do at one stage)).
I'm not a big Prince fan. Sorry Eggy! But I agree he stole the show for me. Thought Joss Stone was going to cum watching him. She seemed half stoned (no pun intended), half pre-coital. What an endearing image.
