Wow, fantastic stuff! Thank you very, very much. I would also love to see a similar list compiled for the tracks on Back to the Light, being that many of those songs came from much earlier sources. Thanks again. |

Very nice... a lot of neat info there. Too bad there is no Queen demo to Why Don't We Try It Again... |
Lester Burnham 08.02.2006 22:33 |
Woah, amazing stuff! Any idea what album 'Why Don't We Try Again' might have been for? I presume Innuendo, but that makes me think that Brian would have recorded it for Back To The Light. |
akindofmagic 08.02.2006 22:36 |
great stuff... we all knew this album was a "best of" brians unrecorded songs...but you put things clear |
rhyeking 08.02.2006 22:42 |
Re: Why Don't We Try Again All I was able to find out from scouring interviews and such with Brian was that it was written "a few years ago" for Queen, but he decided to keep it for himself. My best guess is Innuendo as well, but knowing Brian it could have been written much earlier. The man's notorious for such long gaps between writing, recording and releasing. I'm glad everyone's happy with the post :-) |
Lester Burnham 08.02.2006 22:48 |
Very true - took him nearly five years (1969 - 1973) to get 'White Queen' recorded. This is a very interesting thread as it is; I kind of had an inkling that Brian was going to do a covers album (in fact, I remember reading that sometime in 1996 or so, I think), but this also explains the disjointed feel of Another World. Part of me wishes he had finished the Heroes project, it would've been interesting to see what else he had in mind with that. Damn you, Roger! I don't want to sound unappreciative, but you don't have any other information similar to this for other projects, do you? I only ask because it's threads like this that keep me coming back to Queenzone day after day. Either way, great stuff - thanks, rhyeking! |
rhyeking 08.02.2006 22:59 |
I'm actually working on a larger project similar to this for Queen and solo recordings. The work on THAT directly led to my research on Another World. I was so enthralled by what I found about AW's back-story, I figured I'd share it, and see what response I got. Since you guys like it, I'll start diseminating some other similar threads in the future. It's a lot of sorting and checking and rechecking facts and dates and information. You'd be surprised how often inconsistencies creep up and repeat through websites, until no one bothers to figure out the error. Anyhow, I'll post more stuff like this, seeing as how people are diggin' it! |
rhyeking 08.02.2006 23:05 |
Oh, and as to what else he had in mind...one interview mentions a potential Elvis cover, as he was talking about his heroes growing up. I doubt any such cover was recorded, as no other mention or rumor ever surfaced about an Elvis-cover track. It was probably just at the idea stage ("What other song do I want to do?") before he abandoned that concept. I just hope THIS post doesn't start any such rumors! |
Boy Thomas Raker 08.02.2006 23:14 |
Thank you Rhyeking, that's excellent stuff. I love the idea of 'Heroes', 'tis a shame that he never completed it. Think I'll start a thread of covers I'd like to see Brian do. |
Maz 09.02.2006 00:00 |
First off, very excellent work. We need more like this. Now the cynic in me: do you have sources for this information? Most I remember, but the nugget about Why Don't We Try Again is new. Just curious what interviews this stuff came from. |

“The Guv’ner” – Recorded in 1997 and 1998 - Originally written for a film project of the same name, which fell through - Most of the song was recorded in 1997, Jeff Beck’s lead guitar re-recorded in 1998Correct. Indeed, lyircs have been changed from the "project" version to the AW one. “Untitled” – Recorded in 1998 - Written around the melody of “Business”Brian himself said in a queen-fip.com chat (July 1998) that this instrumental version of "Business" is officially called "Being On My Own" Recorded in the same session as “Slow Down” and “Only Make Believe”Wasn´t "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" also recorded during these sessions? “F.B.I.” - Recorded in 1997 - Recorded with Status Quo, who were unaccredited, at the same session as “It’s Raining In My Heart”I´m sorry but I think that this info is not correct. As far as I know Brian has played all the instruments on FBI. Great post! Very interesting info!! |

Thanks very much for this info. It is a great album, and I really hope one day we will get another fantastic solo album from Mr. May, but I guess that's doubtful? Anyway, thanks for giving me a clearer view and background for this much liked album. |

All I knew was that he played it live a few times with the BMB. Great stuff, I second Lester's opinion that this is exactly a kind of post worth coming back to QZ. Would be absolutely great to read more, about different albums, different projects... Thanks, man!!! Appreciated One more piece of info I can add: Wilderness I read an interview in polish rock magazine called TYLKO ROCK (now named TERAZ ROCK), back in 1998. Brian said that he was to abandon the tape, with only the hapsichord or whatever the instrument is (help?) and than Cozy heard the piece (still without any melody) and absolutely loved it- and that inspired Brian to work more on it. MAYBE Justin's input, influence happened later on, I dunno, never heard of it. But I'm absolutely certain he did say it was Cozy who heard the keyboard "riff" and ablsoutely fell in love with it I'll try do dig out this interview and translate it- I guess it's an obscure thing- an interview for the Polish magazine ;) |

Oh, he also said CHINA BELLE was influenced by all those ROUTE 66 songs, and it just seemed interesting for him to do the version of this based in different culture- Route 66 story in China... I should have this interview in a day or two... |

Regarding Cyborg... ...does anyone have any info as to how Taylor Hawkins ended up playing the drums on this track? Or is it purely Brian just happened to ask him? |

Was that the original idea? BM: Yeah, at some point. This album went through many different stages, and that was one of the concepts at one point, yeah, and it got me through a certain period. Um, I think, erm, I came off, erm, off tour, my own tour last time, um, which was really my sort of therapy after Freddie went. I went all the way around the world with the Brian May Band as it was then, and what we did was go straight back into the Queen area because we made the Made In Heaven album, and at the end of that - which was really two years of hard slog, and quite hard emotional business - um, I kinda didn't know who I was again. You know, I'd made this great step away from Queen on the first album and the first tour, and then here I was back with the Queen hat on thinking, 'What on, what the hell was all that about?' Um, so yes I plunged into doing, into revisiting the things which had made me tick in the very beginning. Like way before Queen, and started looking at all those things which I got excited about as a kid, like Buddy Holly and Little Richard and Elvis records, and all those guitarists who were on there, like Ricky Nelson records and stuff. Urm, and that was my little, that was kind of my project for that moment; and I thought, yes, the album will probably come out as a load of covers. (clears throat) But, um, there came a point |

Thank you very much! About "Business" from the press release for Russian media in 1998: "I've released this track as a tribute to my great friend Cozy Powell". Sounds like he didn't plan this to be on the album... Strange... |
rhyeking 09.02.2006 13:32 |
He released "The Business (Rock On Cozy Mix)" singles as the tribute, even noting on the sleeve: A Tribute To Cozy Powell (1947 – 1998) The singles were released just before the album, May 25, 1998. The following week, June 1, Another World came out. He also included a spoken-word tribute to Cozy, recorded at his Allerton Hill Studio, which is on "The Business" CD single (mentioned above), called "Brian Talks". The album had been mixed and completed before Cozy's death. In an interview, Brian said he spoke to Cozy days before his death, and Cozy said he loved the album and couldn't wait to tour with it. Cozy Powell was killed in a car accident on the M4 Motorway, near Bristol, England, driving his Saab 9000, on April 4th, 1998. |
Serry... 09.02.2006 13:50 |
Yes I know (and actually Another World was available in shops before June 1st - though it's an official date of release, I bought it on May 30th) :) My point was that this "I've released this track as a tribute to my great friend Cozy Powell" sounds like a reason why he released it (for me, non-English speaking man, at least)... Nevermind, thanks again and good luck with your this project! |
Sebastian 09.02.2006 13:51 |
Excellent collection of quotes. I like this one: "without Freddie it´s not Queen" |
rhyeking 09.02.2006 14:09 |
Yes, Serry, I figured that was what you meant, that it read a certain way. I was merely expanding your thought in order to clarify, incase a reader other than you or I thought Brian hadn't planned to release Business at all until Cozy's death. And yes, that quote cited above about Freddie is indeed accurate. At the time, 1998, after "No One But You" was recorded, the feeling amongst the three was exactly that. Good thing their feelings changed, it's a wonderful example of the fact that there are no absolutes in the world and no simple answers. |
Thanks 09.02.2006 16:29 |
To add an unsubstantiated recollection of my own - I thought I read that Jeff Beck had the Guv'nor on a tape in a drawer for a looong time, and Brian said he didn't like to hassle him to play it and return it, but he really did want it back. |
rhyeking 09.02.2006 16:38 |
Yes, That interview is on one of the Guv'ner links above. In my original post, I simply noted that the song was recorded in 1997, and then Beck's guitar re-recorded in 1998. What happened was Brian called Jeff up to play on it, they had a session where they jammed and Jeff wasn't happy about how well he played, so he asked Brian if he could take the tape and work on it himself. He had it for a ridiculously long time and Brian finally started calling him, saying, "I have to get these tracks to the record company." Beck finally returned the tape with the new guitar track mere days before that deadline. Brian loved the guitar work on it and now feels it was worth the wait. |

I guess then that the "Don't want Nobody Teasing Around with Me" song was meant for the "Heroes" project as well...I prefer that to be the best of the "covers". Great job putting all of this together for us! Same goes for those who originally put up this info. Very interesting to see what has been going on "behind the scenes" in a sense, over the past 10 years. |
Lester Burnham 09.02.2006 23:53 |
'Teasing Around' was specifically for the Good Rockin' Tonight project in 2001 or thereabouts, but was ultimately not used. |

Actually, "Teasin' Around" does appear as an unlisted track on some editions of Good Rockin' Tonight, but not all. As it was a Japanese-only release, details are a little inconsistent, depending on what article I read on what website. However, if people were keen to try to reproduce the Heroes project, unless a sense of purity kicks in, you could add it. |
