Listen to the first four seconds of this, (under the cymbals) you may have to boost the volume a little....
Anyone identify the full phrase?
(I did do a search, but feel free to flame me for repetition)...
Which BBC version?
edit: hm, there are definitely voices on both of them in the first four seconds. I would guess that in the first version, it's an engineer probably saying "take xxx"; the second one sounds a lot like Roger (though it may be Freddie; I doubt the backing vocals, and just the lead vocal, were re-recorded) muttering something. I can't make out what he's saying though.
Okay,
You're referring to the 2nd BBC session recording, not the first (which was released on At The Beeb and At The BBC), because I don't hear anything out of the oridinary on the 1st session recording, but lo and behold, there's a bit a chatter under the first four seconds of the 2nd session recording.
I just looped that bit and listened to it a bunch of times, all I can make out is: "Tell me what(unintelligable) play this." Though I freely admit I may be totally wrong. The syllables certainly sound like that. The voice sounds casual, not like Freddie or Brian giving instruction, or even of someone in the same room as them. It might even be unrelated and a bit of ghosting from a previous recording on the tape, which wasn't erased properly.
Further more, because my copy did not come from an official source, it may well be a remanant of the crassfade from what ever John Peel played immeadiately before "Liar" on the broadcast (the tail end of some commercial dialogue or the intro to the song), or even a bit of studio chatter caught by the BBC microphone during the broadcast.
Honestly, if that's it, I don't know enough about the context in which these BBC tracks were aired. Anyone here ever hear the original broadcasts? Where there commercials between songs, or interview segments, or Peel simply talking?
Thanks for the topic, Thanks...fascinating...
Wait, I was wrong, there is a wee bit of dialogue at the very beginning (1 or 2 seconds in) of the 1st BBC session recording.
I agree with the assessment above (before mine) that it sounds like "take xxx" or some last second statement by someone during the recording.
Now listening to the two tracks, I think it may not even be the band, but maybe one of the engineers talking through the studio PA system just as Roger started his take ("tape rolling" perhaps).
Again, something I never heard before!
